Because when someone in the family comes to know about gambling, the self-respect in the family decreases and on the other hand, their children also try to enter the world of gambling. So it is better to hide this matter from the family. This keeps the family peaceful
Most gamblers will keep their gambling activities a secret to their family or relatives who are relatively well connected with the family, most people think to avoid negative stigma against our family because one family member is involved in gambling addiction, but if we live in an urban environment then other people don't have it. time to think about our activities and we are free to do whatever we want without disturbing others. I don't hide the fact that I'm into football betting, but I don't want to tell people I don't know too well... When it comes to relatives and close friends, I have no secrets from anyone... There are just a lot of negative stereotypes in modern society, so gamblers hide their hobbies so as not to disappoint anyone... Gambling for me is an individual social practice, hiding gambling activities as far as I know it all happens depending on the area where the gambler lives, in this case it has the category and situation of gambling activities in that area.I mean this:
If you are and live here: Gambling village Stock Photos and Images, Of course you don't need to hide your gambling activities, it's considered you stupid and not social and not sociable.
But if you are in an area where gambling is prohibited, of course if you can hide your gambling activities it is considered smart and honorable.

At least, the person involved in gambling is not doing any harm to other person in this activity. He is keeping himself engaged and treating it as a relaxing or leisure activity. Now there are also some people who are professional gamblers. For them, winning is important because gambling might be their only source of income. And they are not doing anything illegal as government has allowed in most of the countries.
I beg to differ on this case where you stated gambling is not doing any harm to other persons, because, if you are one who has a family or kids to look after, it would be quite terrible to go about gambling all for your selfish reasons not giving any credence to your family name or stigma that is associated with this. Gambling while single is quite better than if one has a family he/she is looking after, no matter how justifiable the case may be. Now, that I lived far away from my parents, it is my wife I am hiding my online bets. I hate it when she knew I was betting coz she'll gonna scold you for the rest of the day lol.

Only two people my wife and my boss obviously because they might think that I will not deliver something that they expected, like to my wife, money, and time so I make it a point to play on times that she is not at home and of course with my money I save specifically for gambling, to my boss, because I am afraid that my boss will not choose me for promotion on the sensitive department where money is involved, so I make it a point to not mention even to my co-workers that I am into gambling.

I'm not hiding my gambling activities from the people around me but I don't broadcast it and just silently enjoy my gambling journey. People will always have a bad perspective about gambling. If my churchmates and colleagues who are close-minded would know that I'm gambling, they will definitely judge me the wrong way. My husband knows all my gambling activity and he supports me not because he's tolerating me but because he trusts me since I always make sure that I gamble responsibly. I think the opinion of others shouldn't matter to us as long as we know how to put limitations and proper control.

Gambling has always been viewed negatively by everyone, including my family and partner, and I kept my gambling activities a secret from my family, especially my wife.

I cant explain why, but the meaning of a word gambler has sort of a negative context behind it. No one boast that he is a gambler; parents arent very proud that their kids are gamblers (whos your son? a lawyer? marvellous, and your daughter? a dentist? brilliant. my son is a gambler 
) The only people I dont want to find out that I am gambler, I gamble are my employers. I think that will make look like I am not the person they should trust something important and etc.

I never said anything about the gambling activities that I did to my family, only my forum friends understood that I was a gambler . I don't want they are thinking if that all my income is from gambling. Because so far, I don't give them the money from my gambling winning. I use gambling money for other things that have nothing to do with them, or just for myself. I also don't want to disappoint them if they find out that I am a gambler. Maybe I am such a gambler by hiding my gambling activities from the rest of the family. This depends on what kind of people are you because if you are a nobody, no one really cares about it seriously unless when you are in a place where gambling is considered like a drug or alcohol. Because honestly, it is not the same for everyone anyway, you could be automatically a thief if you are a gambler in some places because the word gambler for them has also the same usage as a thief. In some places too, it only takes one person to know that you are a gambler, your dignity will be crashed and you don't have any honor anymore because they considered this act illegal and no man in his right man will ever do this. Some people do hide it from their wife that they are gambler, I see no reason why I will hide it from my wife and friends that am gambling, how long will you continue to hide it, because am sure you can't hide it forever. Among the people, I want to hide my gambling activities with are my inlaws. I think we all know the problem with these people when they keep judging eyes staring at you. Maybe yes, maybe not but some people know if I gamble and they seem okay when they see me gambling.
But I realized not to gamble too much in front of them because I didn't know if they would talk bad about me behind my back.

I'm not, I tell my wife that I do gambling as I think that it is not something to hide. Telling her what I do is better than hiding it, she can help me to control my gambling habit. My wife is the one who manage the money in my family, she hold all my earned and I need to ask her anytime I want to do something or to buy something including for gambling. I just do not tell it to others as there is no good reason for me to tell others that I do gambling.

I too hid my gambling from my parents. especially now that I'm married, if they find out then surely me and my partner will be furiously scolded because they really hate it (all types of gambling activities).
I really love my parents and respect them, and hiding my gambling activities, is one of my forms so that they are not burdened with thoughts, because parents who are too protective of their children, on average, will be burdened by their thoughts if their children are not in accordance with what they want.
