The problem with restricting newbies is that it is offputting to the casual investigator who may be looking at starting to use bitcoin or other crypto currency. The major purpose of this site and the community in general should be to expand the number of people using bitcoin - and promote its acceptance and the understanding of it. Creating artificial impediments for new users and or otherwise putting them off by being rude/obnoxious or generally boorish is detrimental to the adoption of bitcoin by the broader community and hence its value and its future.

The insinuation is that all newbs spam. I take that as an insult.

Innocent until proven guilty - just ban spammers.

Well that's the thing isn't it.

You ARE guilty.

You didn't read the Newbie thread - takes less than 3 minutes to read and yet you've not read it.

These rules were designed for YOU. You specifically.

The insinuation is you won't read before you post and it looks like you've proved the admins right.

Well done.

To keep out all the scammers and spammers of course. It sucks though having to go through it at first :\

You asked why this site restricts newbs?

The precise reason is because we want knowledgeable commentary in the "big boy" forums. The newb status is so you learn how to navigate the site and find the correct forums for your post.

Do people seriously read the forums for 4 hours or just leave the page open on another tab?

Yes, I was seriously reading.
And this is my first post. I've also been lurking for almost 3 months now.

Just posting here so I can (eventually) take part in discussions somewhere relevant. However if newbie status remains I will take my comments elsewhere. Perhaps should start a thread on the reasons for restricting newbs? I find it a bit patronising and disrespectful tbh.

Spam is correct, but theres also another apect to it:

Roughly the twenty first questions an average newcomer will ask have allready been answered, several hundred times at worst.
For example try to find out how many posts about wallet collision and it's propabilities have been posted on these forums Smiley
[edit]
The proper use of those four hours is to read the forums.

tl;rd version:

SPAM! either advertisement SPAM, or noobish question SPAM. the latter is worst.

(..and the "why noob jail?" question have already been answered lat least 1000 times.)

exactly! and again this post juz proved that someone failed to read this https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/newbie-readme-177133 that leads to this https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/whitelist-requests-want-out-of-here-15911

After a while time logged in just becomes days and days and days, I believe after the 2 day mark of time spent on this forum people get de-sensitized to it  Grin

Can't figure out what is their consideration of doing this. No one answer questions from Newbie at all. Why they are so sure newbie must not raise good questions and have to be kept prison here...
