Not replaced per say, since it has become modern day gold.
But certainly it will have a cash competitor.

ripple could very well take over bitcoin as it becomes decentralised with less cyphers
Even I had never heard a ripple before Lol. Or maybe I'm rarely in the altcoin area. But I'm sure bitcoin will continue to be cryptocurrency number 1

Bitcoin won't get replaced by another Currency anytime soon because there's a bunch of people that like Bitcoin because it's the new method to pay for something online and offline.
Bitcoin would only get replaced if the new Currency gets more famous than Bitcoin and the Government allows the new Currency to get circulated as an official Currency system.
although possibilities are always there but still i will like to say that bitcoin is one of the most strongest currency and will remain as number and will remain as strongest currency for ever. people trend is toward bitcoin, they consider bitcoin as main currency of all the crypto currencies. but they want to continue using bitcoin. although they may be trading other alts coin but they are using it just profit otherwise their main currency is bitcoin.

If Bitcoin doesn't resolve the issues of transaction times and transaction fess, it will be surpassed by a crypto coin that can.

Then what coin would that be? Since as far as I know no one yet surpass nor get pretty close to bitcoins fame so theirs no possibilities that bitcoin well be replaced by another one. Look mate we have been dominated by shitcoins outhere and many of us cannot see another more worthy than bitcoins as of now so the thoughs of being replaced is not yet activated on the knowledge of its holders since bitcoin is so strong and not dying at this point.

Ethereum doesn't solve the scaling issues but it does add a lot more features to crypto than bitcoin does. If as you say bitcoin may be replaced but not by ethereum then which coin are you suggesting that should be? Litecoin because they have segwit? A completely different coin? I believe most of the alternative coins would have the same scaling issues if it was adopted in mass.

I'm not prescribing any coin to take over. Personally I'm not at all in favour of a one-coin-to-rule-them-all. However there are projects out there that already scale close to or even beyond VISA/MASTERCARD levels of transactions/sec. Projects that come to mind are bitshares (and Steem),  apparently either one of them processes more transactions per day than both ethers combined at the moment and from what I understood have a lot of room to grow still.

And then we have the build up to the reveal of eos at concensus, that promises to blow just about everything out of the water performance wise. If the rumors are correct, then it might be an idea for bitcoin to simply move over to the new tech. Although I seriously doubt if the bitcoin community would be willing to make that move.

If big blocks are a "good idea" has anyone made an altcoin with larger blocks to see how well it performs?

There is a vacuum and a need for crypto that can support higher transaction rates. If an effective technology to solve bitcoin's shortcomings comes along, it could replace bitcoin as a de facto standard.

I dont believe it can be replaced due to high ammount invested over it, but at the moment there are better coins to do any transactions, charging a low fee and nowadays with the financial issues over the world we need to protect our money, using bitcoin has becamed worse then paypal to low ammounts.
i agree with you because bitcoin is very much stronger currency and a lot of adoption and bitcoin users increasing too much faster and we know that bitcoin is available in everywhere for online transaction and bitcoin getting much more stronger everyday.
yeah bitcoin is very much stronger currency and its very a big challenge for other cryptocurrency because bitcoin adoption is very much higher and there is a lot of services available on bitcoin and there is no one other cryptocurrency is available for online shopping than bitcoin.

Make a Bet, Make a Bit!
As Lauda very rightly said, no one has a Crystal ball. Bitcoin is a very clear market leader within its space and despite the fact it has many indirect and direct competitors, with the market saturation as it currently stands it will be difficult at this stage for some other form of cryptocurrency to take its spot without a fight. However with the amount of investment and innovation within this area I would personally say that it is only a matter of time before it is replaced by a more flexible, diverse and scalable business model that serves a its function in a more heterogenous way.

Everything is replaced eventually.
That's possible but the question is when?

That's easy. As with all things, when something better comes along bitcoin will be replaced.

The technology, computer science and programming world doesn't sit still in a vacuum. It won't take as long as people believe.
Who will take over then, I guess Ethereum has a greater chance, it was my bet because I believe in the team behind ETherem and Vitalik was a genius man, he has the passion of what he is doing. If you compare the price there is a big disparity since the adoption of bitcoin is bigger and wider but as you said there will be a change in the future so it makes sense if I will hold some alts to prepare for that time.

Why does it need to be something connected to the current system of Bitcoin or all the script coins? It could be something completely different or unimaginable at this point

I conceptually agree with this point

Just like before Bitcoin it was impossible to imagine a decentralized currency circulating in a trustless network and built on the blockchain technology (even this technology itself was completely unfathomable merely a decade ago), it may be as impossibly to envisage the next stage in the evolution of money. In such cases I always advise people to watch the movie In Time to get a glimpse of what a future money could look like and how different it might be from what we are familiar with

Bitcoin will always be respected and will never go away. But as in above, as a practical matter its just a matter of time.  Probably sooner then we think. Dont forget a billion just took a position it Tezoz. He could turn the industry on its ear with one announcement. And they are not the only ones. The 2nd wave is upon us.

ripple could very well take over bitcoin as it becomes decentralised with less cyphers

Ripple is a good altcoin but it is not comparable to bitcoin. You can see the difference in Volume and price of Ripple and Bitcoins. Even it is no way near the ETH, DASH or litecoin established altcoins. It can be a good alt in future but first it has to compete with other altcoins before given any competition to bitcoins .
Even from my point of view, the 2nd best crypto currency ETH will not replace or overcome Bitcoins in next few years.

I think Altcoin can not replace bitcoin but yes their are some good Altcoin that can be used in place of btc like monero,Torcoin ect.
But bitcoin is the king of crypto and hence can not be replaced.
Altcoins never replace bitcoin, because the coins that grew once after the existence of bitcoin too is under critics and have never reached high. Recently few altcoins pumped high generating a hope among the users that it might replace bitcoin which is simply an impossible fact.
Hey kid, if you do not have any knowledge in this field, stop making yourself become a joke. Bitcoin is just a prototype which lead to the cryptocurrency revolution. It can never become as great as other cryptos which are born later. Therefore, stop holding Bitcoin if you want to be rich

Absolutely correct, there is no any chances that bitcoin will be replaced by other crypto currency because of the major reason that they are just an alternative coin. Altcoins are just being made to support and lift BTC, they may have a unique feature but they it is not enough to beat the foundation of the father of digital money.
We have different perception, as for me there is a small chance bitcoin will be replace by other coin.
It will happen when we will not support bitcoin because we see there is a better one so it is possible but could take time to happen.

Very difficult because bitcoin has reach to masses now and every one knows mostly about bitcoin irrespective if they own it or not that is different story. While on other hand there were 1000's of altcoin created last year and if you check only handful today exists or have value in market. What happened to those which were supposed to be atleast there for some time but now disappeared. Even some alt coin to come near to bitcoin will take a decade unless suddenly bitcoin goes down or pump out by China

How long have you been frozen?

China is no longer relevant. Not that it had been much relevant before, but we were at least made to believe somehow that it was a major player. Until the Chinese central bank came out and disillusioned us. As Warren Buffett likes to say, when the tide goes out you discover who has been swimming naked. And the PBoC did exactly that, i.e. it had shown us that the Chinese Bitcoin dominance was no more than hype and illusion

Does it make sense to believe that Bitcoin could one day be replaced by another cryptocurrency, that is, a cryptocurrency that really does make Bitcoin obsolete?

For my opinion that is impossible because bitcoin is now more getting stronger than the other cryptocurrencies. There's no other cryptocurrency that match to a bitcoin even in the future I predict that the bitcoin is always no.1 cryptocurrency.

yes you are right that it is impossible that bitcoin will be replace by some other cryptocurrencies because bitcoin is getting stronger and stronger than the other cryptocurrencies as looking at the price of bitcoin and also bitcoin popularity took much time and now many people are attached to the bitcoin and i think the bitcoin will be always no.1 currency in competition with other cryptocurrency.

its possible you'll see.  bitcoin will soon be replaced by ripple base on marketcap. bitcoin will still have the value of more than $1500  and ripple will still have the value of less than $10 but their marketcap will be over how much btc has. those entities involved in xrp are way richer than bticoin and eth combined.
