Cricket in Southeast Asian Games really helps in the improvement of women's cricket. We need more sporting organisations authorise and give opportunity for the women's cricket, because the popularity of men cricket is far high compared to the women's cricket. Myanmar women have already won one medal (bronze at cricket 6s). I could see a lot of improvement in their performance. And the best thing is that they don't have any foreigners in their playing XI, and the entire squad is being made up of natives.
Long time back, in 2006 Myanmar (men's team) was humiliated when they were bowled out for just 10 runs during the ACC Trophy. Nepal chased down the target in just 0.2 overs (aided by 5 wides bowled by the Myanmar opening bowler). Back then a lot of people ridiculed and made fun of Myanmar. The same Myanmar has won a medal in cricket now, and that too without any real support from the ICC or the ACC.

Well.... this match happened two weeks ago. And it doesn't surprise me. Thailand is one of the oldest cricket playing countries in Southeast Asia, and they became an affiliate member of the ICC back in 1995. Philippines on the other hand started participating in international cricket very recently. Anyway, to their credit both these teams had 100% native squads. That matters. If they had included a few foreigners in their squad, then they would have performed better. But the focus was on long term growth, and therefore the squad was comprised of only native players.
BTW, Philippines women have qualified for the gold medal match in T10 format. Either gold or silver medal is guaranteed.

The 6s tournament will get completed today, and a total of 5 teams are taking part - Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, Philippines and Cambodia. Yesterday there were two matches - T20 match between Myanmar and Thailand, and the ODI match between Cambodia and Indonesia. Both of them were one-sided. Myanmar women made 37/9 from 20 overs, and Thailand won by 10 wickets in just 5.1 overs. Cambodia could only make 14 runs in their ODI match, and Indonesia won by 10 wickets in just 1.4 overs.

Philippines women's team was formed only a few years ago, while Thailand women have 2-3 decades of experience playing at the top-level (they have even participated in the ICC Women's World Cup). Although Philippines performed poorly in T20 format, they have progressed to the finals in T10 format (defeated Cambodia by 7 wickets in group stage) and are assured of either gold or the silver medal. Let's look at the positives. Women's tournament was competed almost entirely by native players (unlike the men's version, where Philippines, Cambodia and Singapore squads were mostly comprised of foreigners).

In the 30 overs, Sri Lanka have scored 186/5 runs. Sri Lanka women's team had strong opening. Atapattu and Madavi played good and Bangladesh Women isn't strong enough to chase the target and ended the innings losing every wicket for 128 runs. Ranasinghe had five wicket haul and the team leads the ODI series 2-1.
The ODI series is completed now, and the T20I series will start from next Tuesday. Out of the three ODIs, two were washed out and Sri Lanka managed to win the final match, thereby winning the series 1-0 (even the last match was shortened by rain, to 30 overs per innings). I don't understand the logic in scheduling these matches, when the monsoon season has started in Sri Lanka. It is raining quite heavily all over South Asia, and therefore I am not very hopeful about the T20I series as well. Just hoping that there will be minimal rain interruption.

I have to say, I never watched any women's cricket before the Women's World Cup in South Africa ....but after seeing the quality of the cricket that were delivered in the Women's World Cup.. I changed my mind.
I am glad to see other tournaments branching out to women's cricket now, but unfortunately participation in my country are relatively low, so they are struggling to get enough women to hosts local tournaments.

A new record has been set by Thailand women's team. They are participating in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games, and yesterday there was a match between Philippines women and Thailand women. Philippines got bowled out for just 9 runs. Jennifer Alumbro top scored with 2 runs, while Thipatcha Putthawong of Thailand took 4 wickets. Thailand women chased down the total in 0.4 overs. Myanmar and Malaysia are the other two teams in Group A, while Singapore, Indonesia and Cambodia are participating in Group B.
