What do you think about it? I read this article in the Market Times https://markettimes.co.uk/cryptocurrencies/would-bitcoin-survive-a-nuclear-war/ and in my opinion I don't see a future 'cause to have access to the bitcoin you need internet

I agree with the content of the article, especially with the quotation “The only way to kill Bitcoin is to make it obsolete… like through nuclear war!”. We all know that if there is war like nuclear war, money is useless, no amount of money can save a life in the right place at the right time. Bitcoin and Crypto needed people for it to circulate, if people died and go extinct because of nuclear war the circulation of crypto will be cut off.

On the contrary, nobody prays for war and a nuclear war will be the worst kind of war anybody can ever think of, because this statement can be arguable base I two different point of view. (I.e If is a global nuclear war, then No Bitcoin can not survive it but if is a nuclear war affected by a single nation, then Yes bitcoin can survive it.) Because first,  Bitcoin is a digital currency that exist with the use of internet for it's sole operation unlike gold and fiat currencies that are physical and can be easily affected in case of fire outbreak and bomb blast without a recovery option unlike in the case of Bitcoin with the use of a recovery phrase. Because if a wallet containing Bitcoin happens to be destroy during a nuclear war, i am pretty sure such Bitcoin can still be recovered, in as much as that individual can still remember the 12 seed phrase words, unlike fiat that if it gets destroyed, it is gone for good.

Nuclear war is a nightmare that we should pray not to have. It is not something to think about. I keep wondering why Nations will have nuclear equipment that they will not use. You have equipment for massive destruction and there is a law that says that such weapon cannot be used anytime. what is the essence of having the weapon?
We should only pray that nuclear war should not happen because if it does I am not sure that humanity will survive. It is the human that use bitcoin so if there are no humans how will bitcoin survive?

If a world war starts and one of those old farts remembers to use nukes, it will not be only Bitcoin that will be disappearing. It will be the end of the world as we know it. Bitcoin would be the least of your concerns in the that scenario...

I don't see why we connect bitcoin with these war like situations and make comparisons on these basis? If the population gets vanished the bitcoin would still be there in wallets but if someone doesn't live to access it then there's no fun of such things. The coming blocks would not to mined in the absence of miners and coins in circulation will be same but at the last the same thing comes up that you need to access and make transactions for some real life working otherwise it would be automatically dead.

Let's be honest... the last thing people will worry about, when they are devastated by a Nuclear War... will be "money" ... Just think about it, most buildings in large cities will be destroyed... radiation will be killing millions of people, because direct exposure and indirect exposure from contaminated food and water will be killing them slowly.

I think people will go into survival mode and they will be searching for clean food and water.... and long after that, communication and Internet systems will be restored and Bitcoin and other financial systems will follow after that.  Wink

I am not sure if I will still be thinking about the progress, usage, or market of Bitcoin if ever a nuclear war comes.
Maybe I will just tremble in fear and die from a heart attack then I won't be able to think about it anymore.
But just for the "if" yes it might.
As for our asset, as long as the seed phrase, private key, or JSON file is intact then you could still open it if there will be an application available at that time. We will just wait for the internet to be available again for online transactions.

Nuclear war can be a very real threat, especially in all kinds of near-planetary clusters. But unlike nuclear weapons, actualization of virtual currencies is actually a possibility. Obviously the time to go offline is upon us.

The world of digital money may seem like a different case, but it all starts with a little insight into how these innovations have helped the development of civilization. You may be surprised to see that many aspects of our daily lives are directly related to money and gold.

I can only hope that inspiration drives more people to use cryptocurrencies and that progress continues to become more ingrained in our society.

A temporary halt of the Bitcoin network doesn't mean it will perish and I do not think Bitcoin enthusiasts will be wiped out during that nuclear war.
This probably will be the case for bitcoin and every altcoin if ever a nuclear war happens. Including of shutting down internet from affected countries, food will be scarce as every daily needs will price hike, also new virus/sickness will grow due from different reasons when there are lots of dead bodies. But this will only happen most probably on the country where the battlefield is.

I also think Bitcoin will survive a Nuclear War.  If we look at the system or the structure of Bitcoin, miners are scattered around the world.  The same goes for its nodes.  As long as the whole world is not devastated by nuclear weapons, Bitcoin will survive as long as there is 1 miner up and 1 node up.  If ever the internet shut down during the war, I think it will be one of the priorities to reestablish it since communication is very important. A temporary halt of the Bitcoin network doesn't mean it will perish and I do not think Bitcoin enthusiasts will be wiped out during that nuclear war.

Dude, you talking about NUCLEAR war! That would be the time when you and me will have to find the shelter underground somewhere on the horizon to save our own asses man! Who would think about bitcoin and even dollar bill when people will be killing each other for food, water which is not radioactive.

Our own lives will be more important than the bitcoin or blockchain. There will be nothing available in the nuclear war. The only thing that will keep us going on is survival instinct. That’s all.
It will be hard to survive in a nuclear war, it will affect the world not just 1 country once it is release and I doubt if that happen people will mind their investment. We will mind ofcourse ourselves and our family safety. The war alone is already hearth breaking and affects many countries economy and safety. What more if Nuclear been used, hopefully it will never happen and peace will be find as much as possible.

Of course, if a nuclear war broke out, there would be two possibilities:
The first possibility: the destruction of the entire globe, and in this case there will be no Internet, no Bitcoin, no energy sources, not even humans or any form of human civilization.
The second possibility: destroying one hemisphere or large parts of it, in this case other parts remain that have the power and the internet and therefore bitcoin mining can continue and network transactions confirm even if there are very few miners still working, when the number of miners is low " Mining difficulty” drops dramatically and so the few will be enough to mine the rest of the bitcoin and audit network transactions.

How do you mean bitcoin can't survive nuclear war, have you ever thought of human lives. Yes its true but if a man ( we human) can survive in any hard condition then there will be bitcoin, all we need is internet access and if there non then I don't think you can initiate any transaction without internet, and if there is war meaning there will be no internet access then bitcoin can be affected only without internet or if phone is stolen, or hardware is being misplaced probably the building being destroyed can get bitcoin holders affected.

Thanks for one of the few literate answers. Everything that is written here about the need for fiat money during a nuclear war, and so on, only speaks of how far people are and really do not understand the danger facing our world and lack of education. What the hell bitcoins, if there is a nuclear explosion, billions will die.

Well, the fact people still go for so many shitcoins and ponzi sites shows the (low) level of education already. We don't have to go for higher topics, like the effects of nuclear bombs.
But I think that Obito's answer is incorrect. The size, type, quantity, technology .. all that would matter. Keep in mind that there were the bombs at the end of WW2, there were many tests, there was the accident of Chernobyl and although I don't deny that there were a lot of loses that should have been easily avoided if humans would have been smarter, the humanity has survived.
Of course that in the calamity zone we cannot discuss about bitcoin. There would be no infrastructure, but more important (and sadly), no living humans to use that.
So it's good to see what people understand by nuclear war. 1-2 nukes or all hell breaking loose. Of course, in the second scenario there may remain no advanced creature left on Earth.

But I see on the news that in the event of a nuclear attack, people are offered to stay at home, take off their outerwear if they come from the street, watch the news, and so on.

Well, since they cannot outrun the first wave of radiation, panicking wouldn't do much good, isn't it?
Of course, those smart enough and lucky enough to be far enough from the blast should move farther. This would be the survival of the smarter and more fit (a combination opposed to "the fittest" Darwin teaches).

And yes, they are still handing out iodine tablets. God, what nonsense.

Many don't even understand that after a certain age those tablets may do more bad than good.

A lot of people are very money oriented and they really want to know things like nuclear war won't have as big an impact on currencies like bitcoin. I dunno, I don't know if they are educated or not, and I guess people still want to know how things like this can be handled by bitcoin. However it becomes abnormal if they do not prioritize what is more important than bitcoin and that is themselves.

Effects of nuclear war.

  • Single nuclear bomb over a city could kill millions of people.
  • Nuclear bomb will be causing climatic changes and the same doesn't allow human survival.
  • Nuclear weapons can't be limited to specific locations. It affects beyond the target.
  • Health hazards happens and the same won't be treated by the physicians.
  • Radiation out of the nuclear weapons will be causing sickness and are uncontrollable.

This is the after effects the world experienced out of nuclear bombing. In such situation would bitcoin have survived. It survives, but there will be more things that are being prioritised in such situation.

It's not a matter of scale, even a small nuclear war from two smallest nuclear armed countries which is Pakistan and India, it would be enough to affect the whole world through radioactive fallout and extreme climate changes, I think that would be enough damage to our infrastructures, if by some miracle that we are still alive and we can maintain the Internet and the devices that store bitcoin then probably the answer to the question is that bitcoin would survive but in that scenario, bitcoin's probably the least of our worries as we are struggling to find survive the aftermath of a nuclear war.

No.

Cash and fiat will be useless after a society-ending war. The only things that will have value will be the things that keep you alive:
  • Food
  • Fresh water
  • Medicine
  • Shelter
  • Bullets and other weapons

If you can't eat it, drink it, or use it to protect yourself from weather, disease, and hostile people or animals, then it's pretty useless.

First of all I hope the world don't have to experience any nuclear war.
Now assuming there is a nuclear war, and this things you mentioned are in high demand, definitely not every war affected areas will have these life saving things, so in other for those who are in shortage of then to have access they may have to buy it or exchange for something else, hence fiat will be quite useful in this scenario.
For you to have weapons, food, medicines, clean water and other important stuff to sustain lives through that difficult period, you will have to either buy them or get them somehow and am pretty sure you will need fiat.

For sure the internet connection will be much affected and most provably all bitcoin users on affected area will start cashing out their hidden assets since they will prepare for something worse to come. But eventhough that case happens still I believe bitcoin will still survive since its just there it will never fade. Maybe for a while majority of people will focus to buy first the basic needs but once all get back to normal people will go back to what things they left then comeback to their investments and other personal matters.
