NEW UPDATE: The Windows version of Breaker was being flagged as a trojan by NANO-Antivirus, one of the scanners on VirusTotal, so I added some logic to make sure it can't be used to do harm. It verifies that whatever it downloads is valid XML. VirusTotal is still giving problems, I've contacted NANO-Antivirus to get it whitelisted.
I've also installed a bug tracker at http://gcoinbreaker.com/bugtracker/. This is my first time managing one, so if you see anything that seems to be set up wrong, just tell me. The project is set to private, so make an account and PM/email me your username so I can set it to have access.

Hah.. I forgot to send the data to you guys. I'll tell you over Skype.
Meanwhile, macsga has already helped me track down two instances of "oh gods why did I even forget that?!", and some really stupid assumptions that actually made sense back when I wrote this first code. It caused the Android version to fail to launch if the proper files had not already been downloaded. Still cleaning that up.

NEW UPDATE: There is still a bug where your own bat might not visually update on your side, the first time you play a level on Android, but it WILL update on the server side and the next time you play you can control it normally. I haven't tracked down the source of this bug yet. Another known bug is that a ball and bat might vanish on the clientside if they smash into eachother hard, despite still being fine on the server side. Fun times. At least this version is usable on Android, and it's no different than the previous version on PC.

I have contacted two people about testing this game. In the future, I'll occasionally note that a new version is available for testing; this applies to those who have been accepted as testers. If you want to apply for testing too, feel free to contact me via PM (bit roundabout, but I'm not going to put my email address out in the open on a public forum due to spammers and such). On a related note, a new version is out for testing RIGHT NOW. (Can't promise it'll be up for play the whole time, I haven't set up the server to auto-start the program yet when it boots up)

I've implemented some more level creation stuff. Bricks now have a set of "types" which can be replaced or appended in the level files. They can also be set to default to any angle, used in one of the three levels currently available. I plan to add different shapes rather soon too, but I'll need to make some decent models for them first.

I'll still need to write a nice GUI option to allow people to do it on purpose. And adding a "player" (even an observer) mid-game might cause problems, so it's definitely something for later. But yeah, it could be interesting, especially for the highly competitive stuff like tournaments and ranked play.

Another update. I plan to update every day that I actually get anything done on this project. I've mostly been working on usability though, tweaking the GUI a bit on Android. There's a comments section there now.

Edit: today I got automatic level downloads to work. The server can now have levels added or changed without needing to update every client, and it's practically guaranteed (if you don't mess with the client) that your client and the server will have the same level file when you play. The way I handled it, it'll only download the levels you're actually playing, so it doesn't take up too much data on a phone either. If it already has the level, and it's up to date, it won't re-download it.

GCoin integration -should- be next, but I have one thing to fix first (the bricks lost their colour because Android and normal Java have different Color classes.. and I used that for HSV calculations), and I might play around with some better level-making tools. I'll also want to handle more-than-two-players gracefully, because right now it just assumes any map will do and it turns any surplus players into spectators.

Hi Dekker3D

I will be nice to be able to watch others games Smiley

Sure thing. Making GCoin a bit more valuable was the main point anyway, of course. One of the main differences with the casinos is that it'll also have ways to spend GCoins, like your average freemium game, so it might serve to reduce the number of GCoins in circulation. Basically, the idea is this:

Price is about $0.08 per million GCoins. Players can also buy temporary skins and other decorative stuff for 5k-2m GCoins instead. Many will, because it's cheap. GCoins flow to server owner, who can redistribute them to attract more players or keep it to earn some money. This reduces the amount of GCoins in circulation, or at least reduces the amount that any one person has, increasing price through decreased supply.

Price is about $0.25 per million GCoins. Players can still buy stuff for 5k-2m GCoins instead, but now those 2m start to look like actual money. So, some might try to just sell as high as they can instead, knowing that others might still buy.

Price is about $1 per million GCoins. Players can buy stuff for 5k-2m GCoins, but many will instead just sell and cause the price to drop to a lower level.

^ this means that the price will be stabilized somewhat, with added downward pressure if it goes high and added upward pressure if it goes low. Because the price would hover toward a level where the buyables have a sensible price, making them cheaper (in terms of GCoin) would likely make GCoin more expensive and vice versa. It's not as strong a mechanism as Bitcoin's mining difficulty or anything like that, but it might still help to make GCoin more valuable.

Besides, any currency is pretty worthless if you can't use it on anything. Adding stuff to buy ingame means that GCoin will have more utility, another factor that could drive up the price.

Heh, you're welcome. Anyway, with the ranked stuff later, you'll have all the opportunity you want to take on similarly-skilled players. I'll also likely add a few options that'll change up the whole game's rules, in case you want more of a challenge.

I just finished getting the game to load on Android. Now I have to implement touch controls (easy peasy EDIT: DONE), and make it not crash when you try to exit (might take hours of searching, might be simple. Dunno EDIT: SUDDENLY VANISHED SRSLY WUT). At that point, it'll be equal to the pc version. Next is a chat system for the lobby, actual GCoin integration, and then I could probably throw it out here as a version 1.0 of sorts.

And to both IMJim and macsga: thanks a lot for the kind words, it's good to know this stuff is appreciated!

I have a new post about this on my blog. Figure I might as well pimp it, as I'll also be hosting various related things on that site. A wiki and perhaps a forum later. And it's pretty, so go there anyway! Tongue

Have to say though.........spam away here brother!  Don't think ANYONE considers your efforts or posts as spam in anyway shape or form, you are obviously doing something GREAT for this community and your posts only help get us more attention so post away my friend:-)

You guys might be in trouble though if this a tournament type of platform........I'm really good at these breakout games, usually make it through the entire game without having to start over with extra balls:-)

Yeah, IMJim! I'm making decent progress here, won't be long until it's out. I've set up a dev blog yesterday so I can give more frequent and detailed updates without spamming this place too much.

The first version will be pretty rudimentary: online "single player" mode for those who don't feel too competitive, multiplayer mode with any number of players as long as there's a level file that supports that number, and the same "bet a small amount, win more than you lose on average" type of distribution that the casinos also offer. One difference with the Android casino is that all gameplay is serverside, so it's a lot harder for a skilled person to hack this thing and try to steal all the GCoins.

Does this mean there is a Breakout/Arkanoid style game in the works that will allow earning GCoin?!

I thought I had collected enough of these bad boys, but you will be twisting my arm with this one.  The only game I really play anymore when I have a few minutes, love most all of the Arkanoid style games........got addicted to that game MANY years ago on some PC my brother in law had that I can't remember the name of.

Hey Greg.......hope all is well bud!!

Minor update on the Breakout thing: I've been working on making it run on Android. So far, I have the main menu working without issues, but it required a technical change that will require some cleanup. And it seems writing some files to a folder isn't as simple in Android as it is on a PC.

^ me holding my ancient HTC One V and taking a pic with my Galaxy S4.. because the other way around just gave me grainy useless pictures.

By the way, the minimum required Android version will be 2.2. I could potentially deploy to iOS too, at version 4.3 and up, but I'd require me to have an iDevice to test it on. Any volunteers? Tongue

Hi Dekker3D,

Looking good. I know how long it takes to get all the parts together.
Looking forward to playing Smiley
