So in the past month i got really heavily invested in monero for the long hodl, because I really believe in this project, but after reading some reddit FUD I became a bit concerned. In the monero cons thread someone mentioned that competition like zcash for example might be able to easily outpace monero as we close to global adoption, simply because of the difference in the funding structure of the two coins, citing that projects like zcash have big money behind them instead of relying solely on the donations from the community.

Could someone alleviate my concerns about this? I intend to hodl, but if this concern is legit I might have to take this into account.

It sounds more like you're seeking affirmation; the Stuart Smalley kinda affirmation. I'd spend an itsy-bitsy portion of that huge XMR investment of yours to pay for a shrink. He'd/she'd be more in a position to professionally alleviate your concerns rather than seeking for it in a forum.

Zcashes trend line was predicted in this thread when it was launched and that trend has held true to that prediction and it will not change. It will continue to slowly fade away. DYOR and just read the threads from it's launch, everything forecasted has come to pass and then marvel at the beauty of Zooko wearing a monero labs t-shirt.

^^^--- What does that tell you?

BTW looking at that coffee table it looks like lines were being done with a bowie knife, or maybe making some fake ID's Or both! Smiley

Probably, this question has already been asked many times, but I am worried about the moral aspect. By conducting completely anonymous transactions, you can finance absolutely anything in the world. starting from buying drugs and ending with terrorism. Do not plan - whether you somehow limit these options?

You mean, in the same way that cash is currently used?

the question is why those things exist in the first place.

im not saying that a truly free money will revolutionize civilization, but yah never know what will happen when you don't have nation states printing money, waging wars with their printed money, etc., etc.

To answer your question. The problem is I didn't know how to stop new wallet from downloading blockchain to my C driver ProgramData\bitmonero and my C drive is SSD on which I don't have enough space for blockchain.
I couldn't find instructions either.
Ok, so in wallet Settings > Node > I chose directory of old blockchain but I see it is not connecting to that but downloading again from start.
What is the proper directory setup to connect, do I need to choose some file? Instructions are not clear about that.

Can you tell (or PM) me the exact directory the correct blockchain file (data.mdb) is located? Then I can provide specific instructions.

D:\Monero\lmdb\data.mdb

The Blockchain Location on the Settings page has to be set to D:\Monero then. Hopefully this helps.

If you install the new xmr stack there is even a message saying something like, brought to you by ryo coin, the coin where we will be able to do everything we were not able to do in Monero, or something along these lines... WTF?? Deleted it immediately after I read this.

The developer of xmr-stak got upset after not getting paid via the FFS, so now he plays by himself with a new coin.

Actually to be correct. He did not wanted to do a FFS at all,  but he wanted to do it on some different way.   I am not sure what he wanted to develop back then.  Whatever it was I am sure he would get founded fast if he would make a FFS. At that time there was lack of FFs and lots of interests in founding them.

Hello guys and gals.

Been away for some time, but was thinking I'd run a Monero miner again in some small pool to support the network.
I was going through the OP to find the necessary resources, but am finding that a bunch of information there is quite outdated. Old miners, broken link to forum and others, etc. This is just a heads up, as I didn't quite have the time to review everything or come up with corrections...

Finally, could someone point me to a helpful post with *current* information on how to mine? Thanks!  Smiley

Basically I don't know how long you have been away but alot has changed with XMR in the last year. Basically we first got the network hit with ASICs, which lead to a hard-fork called Cryptonite V7, and last week we had the algorithm changed again due to unfair FGPA mining.

The only miners supported are SRBMiner and XMR-Stak. The rest don't work anymore. Nicehash just uses XMR-Stak in the background and Claymore miner only support V7.

Depending on what GPU you have, you can make more profit mining XMR than ETH and the other coins.

It wasn't changed due to unfair FPGA mining. It was changed again because thats the new policy. Every 6 months the monero network is gonna have a different tweaked PoW.

Because its more fun that way.

Thanks GigerAle and adaseb. Its proving quite fun to be a sort-of-newbie at some stuff again.   Wink

You can set the blockchain location to the proper directory on the settings page. May I ask why you deleted everything though? You should've simply followed the instructions on how to upgrade here:

yeah, they are one of the few actively updating the mining software.
