I have installed GUI v0.12.3. I have chosen "Remote Node", I have waited for the 1.6M blocks to be downloaded, until all was synchronized. Then I have closed the GUI.

Now that I have reopened it, under Network Status, it is written that "Daemon is synchronized" but under "Wallet blocks remaining" I have to resynchronize with the whole >1.6M blocks.

Why is that? Will that happen every time I close the GUI?

Assuming you're using the GUI in conjunction with a Ledger device, see:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/9ap96g/gui_v01230_cli_v01230_both_with_direct_ledger/e62g3m7/?context=3
Yes I am using the GUI.

I have again synchronized the >1.6M blocks, I have pay attention to do the following:
[1] Exit the GUI by clicking on the x (right top).

[2] Exit the Ledger Monero app.

[3] Unplug the Ledger device.

But now I have to synchronize again the whole 1.6M blocks when I relauch the GUI Sad

Maybe I am doing [2] wrongly, the Ledger Monero app close itself after minutes because it goes into the sleepd mode, so when I exit the GUI the Monero app is already exited. What can I do?

I am sure there is a proper Ledger procedure what to turn off first. But you can just save block chain in monerod. That is the other black window that opens beside GUI. Just click in there and type save and it will save your progress until then. No matter if you latter on do not close it properly or if it crashes by any chance.

It also save when you type exit. but then it also exit with that command Tongue

Any coin that has optional privacy is total crap as privacy coin. It might work for something else, I don't know, their use is not clear.
what do you mean? privacy coins are needed for anonymous transactions. and I see more and more demand for privacy coins like monero and other.
legday is talking about optional privacy. Which means you can chose if you wish your transactions to be Anonymous or not (i. e. Zcash, Dash). Many people thinks that this is not good and can be detrimental for coins privacy. Most of Monero community believes privacy must be there by default.

URGENT - FUNDING NEEDED

Hi guys,

Just a heads up that we've got two very important things that need funding so that these smart PHD guys can keep building Monero.

Would very much appreciate your kindness and generosity!  Grin

Doomed to see the future and unable to prevent it
I'm recently diving into Monero but also Zcash and Grin. Is there a paper I can read in order to get the plus and cons of the privacy protocols used by these 3 projects? Thanks

There are tons of Zcrap and Monero comparisons if you google and Grin is mostly just on github and is still in Alpha as far as I know. Off the top of my head Grin uses a new mimblewimble protocol with a cookoo algo which was originally designed to be memory hardened for asic resistance but now embraces asics.

I'm sure you'll get some better answers as that is just off the top of my head and is not very conducive to helping make any kind of comparison.

IMO Monero is here today and works, Zcrap is a scam and Grin may be something someday. the nice thin about Grin also is the inflationary curve which means you don't have to be an early adopter, it is not designed to be a get rich quick scheme but rather an actual currency as monero is designed to be.

Stolen from WO thread:

Been trying to stay away from mega threads lately but I just felt compelled to share this, was reading an article on coindesk this morning about the take down of alpha bay and the seizure of all of Alaxander Cazes's assets. From the article they talk about how they pretty much caught him red handed, exactly how they caught Ross with his laptop open and un-encrypted with all the evidence right there.

What I found really interesting was the description of his crypto assets, check out the quote from the article:

"Cazes possessed more than $8.8 million in cryptocurrencies pooled across 1,605.05 bitcoins, 8,309.27 ether, 3,691.98 zcash and an unknown amount of monero"

LOL, an "unknown" amount of monero, yall know he had to have a shit ton but what intrigued me was that they still didn't know how much, does this not show that in practice monero is and will be the most private crypto out there? I like Zcash and Monero but I believe Monero is inherently more private. What yall think?

Here is the article if anyone interested, front page of coindesk today, good read:
https://www.coindesk.com/us-court-seizes-lambo-and-crypto-millions-from-dead-dark-web-kingpin/

I remember that was pointed out when he first got busted, nice to see it still holds true and I have every confidence that it will into the future.

Can someone tell me which miner should I use for AMD GPUs such as RX 580?

Best information you should get on this subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/MoneroMining/

Usually miners are listed on some pools web pages. Just google them.

Well at least you can rest peacefully knowing full well that your processor has done more for humanity than most every person that's ever lived up until the point in time in which you decided to halt it (if you so did).

Surely that's no reason to be all sad and stuff Cheesy
