Sorry guys, I'm a troglodyte. So I've downloaded the precompiled binaries from the getting started link. I've created the bitmonero folder in appdata and placed the downloaded blockchain there. When I run simplewallet.exe I get "wallet failed to connect to daemon...". What else do I need to do to accept a transaction into this wallet?

You have to run bitmonerod.exe from Download -
Windows 64-bit binaries or Windows 32-bit binaries or OSX 64-bit binaries (in OP) Wink

is solo mining a valid option?

Yes. An ordinary quad-core CPU will find a block roughly once every 6-7 days.

GUI wallet?

didn't someone make an unofficial one or something? I could have sworn this was done already

It's linked in the OP under downloads.

appdata/roamning/bitmonero in win64 where all the normal coins folders are?

Yes.

Excellent news. Meanwhile, MintPal and Cryptsy are too lazy to do anything that might take actual work.

where do you put blockchain .bin?

Depends on your OS. As given in the OP:

Windows 64-bit blockchain (place in %AppData%/bitmonero, updated May 16)
Linux / OSX 64-bit blockchain (place in ~/.bitmonero, updated May 16)

Good Job
MRO is trade on poloniex now.
It's time to let more people know MRO

This is great news. The upward trend for MRO will likely come in the next days or weeks as more and more people learn about it and it gets on more and more exchanges. I am excited to be in on the ground floor Cheesy

Poloniex:

Please do NOT send Monero directly from another exchange. At present, exchanges don't allow sending with a Payment ID, which is essential.
