Hackers Exploiting Microsoft Servers to Mine Monero - Makes $63,000 In 3 Months

Mining cryptocurrencies can be a costly investment as it takes a monstrous amount of computing power, and thus hackers have started using malware that steals computing resources of computers it hijacks to make lots of dollars in digital currency.
Security researchers at security firm ESET have spotted one such malware that infected hundreds of Windows web servers with a malicious cryptocurrency miner and helps cybercriminals made more than $63,000 worth of Monero (XMR) in just three months.
According to a report published by ESET today, cybercriminals only made modifications to legitimate open source Monero mining software and exploited a known vulnerability in Microsoft IIS 6.0 to secretly install the miner on unpatched Windows servers.

I wonder why web admins use Linux servers 90% of the time.

I still wonder why general consumers use Windows 90% of the time, despite the wannacry stuff and other fiascos.
Using Snowden logic, windows is a professional OS with security guaranteed while Linux is a amateurish OS developed by amateurs that have no idea what they're doing.

Experts at the ESET security company discovered cybercriminals who exploited Microsoft servers to mine Monero (XMR) and raised a total of $ 63,000 in three months of attack. Mining cripto-coins is a profitable business, but at the same time it is expensive because it requires a significant investment in computing power. The group of hackers known as "Crooks" is using malicious code that steals computing resources from the victim's machine for crypto-coin mining, and the number of such attacks continues to increase. The "Crooks" modified the mining code of Monero to exploit a vulnerability known as CVE-2017-7269 in Microsoft IIS 6.0 to deploy the miner to Windows servers.

Funny that we still have webdav vulnerabilities in 2017. Windows servers are better off mining monero than serving websites anyway.

Bitcoin is not a currency or asset. Its a MOVEMENT
I tried to search where I can learn cryptonote/cryptonight development and I could not find anything, no books , no video lessons.
http://cryptonote-coin.org/

Thank you for at taking my query. I have been to this website but it is just basic info and whitepaper which i have already read, and then they teach about creating your own coin, which i dont intend to.

I wanted to learn how i can contribute to monero, or how I can use blockchain, pool, wallet API to build tools for cryptonote community, like payment processing, mobile wallet etc.

When you say AMD broke OpenCL, are you meaning you cannot install 8 gpus or is it the DAG lag or what?

I mean OpenCL is broken under Linux AMDGPU-PRO drivers for the RX550 (AMD is aware of the problem), the Windows 10 OpenCL drivers work but Windows has an 8 GPU limit and it's not free.

Despite the driver issues they seem to be the most power efficient cards for mining XMR however I still prefer the 480/580 even if they use a bit more power.

It's not?

The wallet's saying that alternate blocks have been added at 1410885, 1410886, and 1411461 (two blocks).  What's up with that?

#1 coin to mine on my RX480.

This is two (2) RX550s:

However AMD has broken the OpenCL on the RX550 under Linux so you're limited to buying Windows 10 and maximum of eight (8) GPUs.

i'm back mining eth for vga rx470, because xmr not profit
Yes true, for the currently mining Monero unprofitable, I also turned its mining to Zencash. Hope to have the latest information and guidance so that mining Monero more profitable.

If you look towards holding on to Monero for dear life while difficulty is lower over the next year or two instead of cashing out immediately, I do speculate the long term profits to be better than Zencash.

crosspost in case of deletion.

Well Polo is screwing me again, it's charging me for a long and then when the order gets filled and the price moves in my direction it closes the order without ever posting it on the order books and charges me the fees. Did it to me 3 times in a row while i was trying to long on the way back up from .0020

I tried to search where I can learn cryptonote/cryptonight development and I could not find anything, no books , no video lessons.

Objective to learn is to contribute to Monero eco system, creating demo course about how wallet, pools and API works. So that other developers can also you and visualize how they can use monero and cryptonote for their app needs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

anyone can advise how i can use API to make mobile wallet?

My problem is not solved!
I have to reinstall Windows 10!
How to Recover the GUI Monero wallet after reinstalling windows?
Which files should I save and where are they located?
Is it difficult to answer these simple questions that I ask for the third time?

Thanks!
The only important thing to save is your 25 seed words. Now might also be the time to consider NOT reinstalling windows, and using a less invasive OS.  Took me years of intentions, but it ended up being very simple to install ubuntu.

Finally a meaningful answer!
Thanks man!

that will maintain your access to your coins, but not and wallet history. if that is important to you, save the wallet file.

edit: correction.  History will regenerate.  Wow.
