You could probably sync against a remote node instead, it seems really fast the time I tried it?

Syncing through wifi sucks.
An average wifi connection will sync, slowly.  An excellent wifi connection can sync pretty fast, but I've only ever found one wifi connection that was super fast, where the blocks just scrolled one after another like butter.  The average wifi at libraries and cafes and such syncs the blockchain pretty slow.
What's even worse, on weak wifi, the daemon won't sync at all.  I mean not a single block, no matter how long you wait.  I'm talking about wifi that's adequate to load the average web page, but not much more.  The kind of wifi where it can be a little hard to get a connection, but once you're on, it's usually ok.  Occasionally it might drop out, but generally the connection stays good the whole time you're online, even for several hours.
And that's what the wifi is like where I'm living now.  It's kind of slow.  It's actually good enough for everything I need to do -- except run my monero node.   I take my computer elsewhere, and it syncs.  Then I go home, and I can't sync the last few blocks.  The problem is not that it syncs at a snail's pace.  If that were the case, I would just leave my computer turned on all the time.  No, the problem is that the daemon doesn't sync a single block, ever, when you're using mediocre wifi.

I have the same question as this guy here: https://forum.getmonero.org/5/support/87060/using-monero-gui-wallet-beta-and-the-hardfork

Using Monero GUI Wallet (beta) - and the hardfork?
Hi Guys, I am using the beta Monero GUI wallet, made available late December. Will it work as-is after the hard-fork in a few days, or do I have to take any specific actions? thanks

Do any steps need to be taken for those of us using the GUI build from here: https://getmonero.org/2016/12/22/monero-core-gui-beta-released.html

Thanks
