Hi Guys

New to Monero.
It seems to take ages to get synced with the blockchain on OSX.
How do I get the blockchain.raw file imported?

LEALANA Bitcoin Grim Reaper
I just saw this and thought it wasn't very bright of the hackers to ask for BTC when they could have had Monero...

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-38127096

The targeted victims don't really know even what Bitcoin is.
Monero popularity still has to grow a lot until it can reach the point ransomware will ask XMR instead of BTC.

The targeted victims don't know what Monero is either.

Those hackers will smarten up over time. Just a matter of when.

So now that xmr is a serious coin would you guys recommend holding it in my portfolio for later in life or did it just have its minute of fame and its going to die like ltc did.

Just wondering.

As someone who has been long on XMR for quite some time, I would say, yes, it's absolutely a good investment for "later". However. Anything can change, this is a new realm. Point was, I am still buying. Tongue

Edit - have been using the compiled linux gui a bit, found a bug once, but it's shaping up to be a good release in the end, everything worked for me except  a few minor bugs. Feeling pretty confident about things overall. Cheesy

Cheers! Smiley

Edit 2 - This is NOT investment advice, merely opinion! Cheesy

Thanks for the advice man. But its hard to take your word for it because your already long on it and in profit I assume.

I'll wait to get more advice and see where I can go from there.

If you don't mind holding for 6 months  then buy if you expect  quick returns then your just gambling. I have been grabbing some in the dips as I was divested when the spike hit but I know it will never drop back to those prices so am just trying to get some in the dips as I said. I know it will still be a long road to adoption but this is not a fly by night project, it has legs and will be around for years to come unless the crypto gets broken which is not in the immediate future. BTW anyone that has followed my advice is in profit.

Yeah I've been watching and decided to buy in today and I'll keep buying a few coins every day over th3e next few months. I'll check back then and let you guys know what my average is.

I will make two points:

1. This question is probably better off in the Monero speculation thread.

2.  You should not buy any altcoin solely as an investment. Do you understand how Monero works and what value using it can provide? If you cannot answer those basic questions, then don't buy Monero.

Plenty of people have done exactly that and made a lot of profit. Like it or not, speculation is an important factor in any altcoin's evolution. But yes, this kind of chat belongs in the other thread.

I was researching the use of Monero on phones and I read this:
"I suggest you use an sd card. You don't want DB ops to burn out your internal flash."
http://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/2702/is-it-possible-to-run-a-full-monerod-node-on-android/2706
How badly does Monero's lmdb operations put wear on the flash?
I'm using Monero on a chromebook with an SSD right now.  I mean, SSD is the recommended technology, from what I've read.
Does the flash in a cellphone withstand fewer write cycles than a laptop SSD?

No idea, really. My comment "better safe than sorry" is based on the simple fact that *if* the SD card wears out you can easily replace it. If the phone's internal flash wears out your phone is toast.

Doomed to see the future and unable to prevent it
So now that xmr is a serious coin would you guys recommend holding it in my portfolio for later in life or did it just have its minute of fame and its going to die like ltc did.

Just wondering.

Thanks for the advice man. But its hard to take your word for it because your already long on it and in profit I assume.

I'll wait to get more advice and see where I can go from there.

It will probably be easier to trust your own research than the opinions of strangers on the internet.

Start with the cryptonote whitepaper, then check out getmonero.org to see what makes Monero different and if it's something you want to be involved in. If you're still not sure, then you probably shouldn't be throwing money at it.

Does the GUI have an offline/cold wallet with an offline transaction signing feature/functionality à la Armory? If it does, it's gonna be a super-winner. I just saw a video preview of the GUI; already looks awesome:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n5azwzhwiA

I don't think it does. However, moneromooo wrote this functionality into monero-wallet-cli a while ago, Wait, I don't seem to see it on the help menu. Maybe it never got merged. I have no idea which version I'm using. Damnit, my build computer is offline so I can't check.

Long story short, the code is there. Maybe Jacquee (second dev funded with donatings for GUI) can get this functionality working after daemon control is integrated into the GUI.

Thanks for the info. We can only hope that the feature will be incorporated from the get-go since security is paramount. I personally believe that the GUI is a catalyst to increased adoption and therefore the value of XMR. All the more reason to have a secure wallet for such an eventuality.

What has it got to do with my inquiry? Why don't you go play marbles in your mommy's backyard instead?

Hey guys I've built (and will continue to improve) a pool for Monero.  This is only the testing phase and I plan to scale up to a much larger server once this has finished. I would appreciate if you guys are willing to mine on my server. Ideally I need to get a block or two to ensure that the payment system is working correctly.  At the moment I am only charging a 1% fee, but this might be subject to change in the future. Let me know your thoughts on improvements. What is it you want to see out of a pool?

coinhash.tk

U need to change the line in the home.html (or somewhere) for calculating hashrate - you currently have it doubled.

I think we'd all know if the Monero hashrate went from 30 Mh/s to 60 overnight.

You can also set up a private testnet to see if the payments work. The instructions are on the pool code github page.

I'm confused you mean the 60 MH/s?
http://www.coinwarz.com/network-hashrate-charts/monero-network-hashrate-chart

Did you not know?

You see, the network HR  at coinwarz is wrong too...

This was an error introduced in some services around monero when the blocktime went up to 2 min.

Code:
$ ./bitmonerod status
Creating the logger system
Height: 1189753/1189753 (100.0%) on mainnet, not mining, net hash 29.81 MH/s, v3, update needed, 8+27 connections

So where is everyone pulling from to be the most accurate?
Nevermind I fixed the problem. Let me know if you guys see anything else.
