For a small cost, many just rent large amounts of hash and hope to hit, many  can point their rigs at nicehash and get paid per share mining there as if they were mining in a generic pool, but these rigs when rented are diverted to where the renter wants them. The rig owner is always getting paid, I have got my KNC titan pointed here.

Where do people rent 100s of TH or Petahash of hashing power?

It looks like most of the recents blocks are found thanks to big rentals !
Luck is no match for raw hashrate.

When I look at https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/pool/solockpool
and it says
"Block mined with CSV version byte
This will count towards the softfork activation of BIP68, BIP112, BIP113"

what does this mean, exactly. I've googled it but not a lot of information coming up.

My AR-15 ID's itself as a toaster. Want breakfast?
From my limited understanding of mining, with a pool you are all working together to split the rewards,
with solo mining, you are basically playing the lottery so that you have a very small chance of a large payout?
(And this is a bit of both- CK pool is doing some of the backend work so you dont have to download a whole block chain?)

correct.  a pool is normally pooling hashpower to share the rewards;  and a solo pool is for people whom can't have the bandwidth or hardware to run a wallet daemon to mine to that (your own pool basically).

I love CK solo because I am on a cellular or a satellite link which has bandwidth and restrictions on data amounts;  so not running the wallet at home is mandatory.  I make use of every caveat that the solo pool provides because that's the situation i'm in =)

yeah that's right, that and low latency to reduce the chances of your block being stale.

OK... thousands of years is a bit of an exaggeration... 180GH expects to solve a block after 147 years at current diff Tongue
Note that I said "chances are much more likely..." so my statement is valid.  Grin Tongue  Kiss

Hello
How many minimum wait block at 180 GH/S ?
The minimum days to wait would be 0.  You could solve a block the instant you turn on your S1.  Chances are much more likely that you would take thousands of years to solve one, however.

1000 years? So few? Wait!  Grin Grin Grin
