You should keep both BTC and ETH. Divide 50-50 if you're worrying about bitcoin after 1 August. BTC and ETH are good investments.

BTC is main crypto at the moment. All coins trade in pairs with it. So, you should to keep some btc anyway to refill other coins.

In my opinion, it's always good to invest with digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ether. Both could be the best investment of your activities. But, Following the Segwit events on August 1, I think we should more care about ETH at least to being secured.
On the other hand, as Segwit now has big chances to be implemented successfully because of bip91 being locked in, ethereum is not having its best times with all these hacks and shows its disadvantages more than ever. That's why I suggest to wait till 1 of August and if Segwit gets activated - buy btc ASAP. If something goes wrong - buy ethereum (or litecoin).

If I have $3000, my investment choice will be to diversify and buy 70% BTC and 30% ETH. But I will invest after 1 Aug .

Diversify dude. Get both 50:50. At least you have a leverage. We all know that there is a relation with regards to the price. So when one is down, for sure the other coin will be down as well. And you still have options if you just want to trade bitcoin for a day and the next day ETH. Question though Are you planning to do trading or purely investment?

In objective reality, ETH is the better medium of exchange, and it's not even technically built to be a currency per se. More to be used as gas for smart contracts.

But there's a reason I have about 5 BTC and haven't traded in the 100 Ethereum I have for more BTC. It's because I want to diversify my investments. I do believe both will go up exponentially in the next few years, so whether one goes up more than the other, I don't think one in your situation can lose, really...

But part of me feels that BTC will always be the gold standard. Why not just do half and half? About 5 Eth and .5 BTC?

At the end of the day, you'll be glad you bought either one, I'm sure.

If i was you i will prefer to choice 10 ETH, because Ethereum have bright future. Although Bitcoin price is very good. But if holding for 5 years ETH is very good than Bitcoin.

With $3000 to invest, is there any advantages to either, with the expectations/hopes that they both will continue to grow?  Just trying to see what others would do, as I plan to let this initial investment sit for 5yrs minimum in a cold wallet.

Thanks ladies and gents!

I think you should invest in 1 BTC. Btc has a defined limits for the amount of coins that it can have. Eth don't. That makes eth illimited, and when there is more supply than demand, the price goes down. You don't see that happening with bitcoin because the supply is limited.

I would buy ETH for $3K instead of bitcoin. Because in past few weeks the ETH-BTC price dropped significantly. If btc rise or fall, the ETH price will do the same. BUT I'm expecting ETH to gain value over BTC in next months again.

If I can afford to invest 3000 dollar now, I buy both Ethereum and Bitcoin ( 0.8 BTC and 2 ETH). Both coins has the potential to increase in value very much in 5 years.

I think wait for 5 years and do nothing is not a good plan.  We don't know what will happen to cryptocurrencies in future. Maybe it's better to buy a new coin that doesn't exist today in the future with your Bitcoins or Ethereums. You should follow the news and make right decisions during these five years.

for five years its definitely bitcoin.

Now if you ask the same question for only 1 year I should reconsider my answer.

And don't worry, bitcoin will die again, just don't read anything about it, forget it then come back in 2022.

Thank you all for your input. I'm going to most likely invest in 1BTC, and then go from there as it seems as though the majority of older guys are saying so, and more importantly, my gut says get 1 BTC and then dabble from there.

Appreciate all responses, especially the lengthy in-depth ones!

BTC value is still less than 3000 USD. Buy 1 BTC and buy ETC with the rest of ETC. ETC rise will most likely be like ETH in 2018.

I vote for 10 ETH here. I believe ethereum will exceed the price of 0.1 bitcoin next month and will start to rise up to 0.15 bitcoin. Investors are now in bitcoin, after they leave bitcoin, they will get in ethereum.

Well here you're going to get shitloads of people with ulterior motives for asking you to buy each cryptocurrency, none of whom actually provide any justification for their belief.  It's like a couple of tribes screaming at each other and not even hearing what each other are saying.

If you ask me, both have their use cases and their use cases are not the same.  What you need to understand though is that Ether is just coming out of a massive pump and dump, which caused a huge number of people to think that Ether would surpass Bitcoin very soon in market cap, even though that was infeasible.  You can see on the chart that it started going off the rails around February.  If you bought in from March onwards, you're buying in dangerous territory.

Bitcoin has had a similar rise, but only by 200-300%, rather than 2000-3000%.  There's also the fact that Bitcoin has been through this very cycle about 5 times before and there is some kind of maturity in the market, whereas for ETH this is pretty new and actual usage of it has not matched the price surge at all.

You can expect that the ETH bubble will burst, because the majority of current ICOs are pure hype.  After that, perhaps we'll start seeing useful things built on the Ethereum blockchain, at which point buying in is fine.  Right now I would recommend having the majority of your funds in Bitcoin and ETH just as a hedge, because Bitcoin's utility is about to improve (SegWit+LN+potentially a block size increase).

Better to diversify, Bro.. that is: $1500BTC  and 5 Ethereum.  It is the safest thing to do.
Ethereum is pretty cheap now. . It will most definitely go up soon. Bitcoin could go up as well from August 1.

with that kind of money I would be looking long term, and I believe Ether still has a bit of time to dip down a bit to the reload zone. Either way you'll likely profit its just a matter of timing the entry.
