some of our effort will be lost now.

Not all lottery tickets are winners.  Every share you submit is like a lottery ticket.  It's as simple as that.

We pooled our resources, bought several million lottery tickets, and none of them were winners.  Our effort was lost.  Bummer!  But, on average, we'll keep winning a certain percentage of the time, so I'm going to keep buying tickets.

No kidding? I don't want to win with every ticket. I'm not saying that.

"PPLNS - Pay Per Last N Shares. Similar to proportional, but instead of looking at the number of shares in the round, instead looks at the last N shares, regardless of round boundaries. "

PPLNS - is protecting miners from "lottery ticket" effect. Because in the long run probability to "win" is as high as your hash-rate is compared to networks.

All i want to say is it would be better to hold loyal miners and value their effort. In the long run it wont matter for the stable miners, and there would be less pool hoppers if they know that their effort wont get lost.

In other news, do the Chili Miners work with the BitMinter client?

In the latest version of Bitminter client I made a fix for the Chili firmware BFL-incompatibility, but I couldn't get anyone to test whether it works. Worth a try. Wink

Chili #1 Arrived today (with 2 more on the way!) and I plugged it in and got it working with BitMinter. I'm using the 1.4.3 client and here is what happened. The device was recognized correctly right away since I previously had a BFL Jally going on this PC so I didn't need to mess with drivers. It showed up in BitMinter as BitFORCE and when I clicked start I got probably about 20 lines of -

BitFORCE (COM29) ERROR: Unexpected response to stage 1 of 2 -stage command: ERROR: UNKNOWN

Then -

BitFORCE (COM29) ERROR: BFL-incompatible Chili Firmware? Retrying without ZWX Command

Followed by 20 more lines of the first error. It then ended on -

BitFORCE (COM29) ERROR: Critical Failure!

At which point I stopped the device, started it again, and it has been hashing since. I'm not sure what firmware version this Chili has specifically but as far as I can tell Bitminter was able to sort it out. Or the old restart method worked wonders Smiley Thanks Dr H!

You need to stop this before you lose even more people hashing on your network. I see the total has dropped a lot on your network, it's down to 418 now from 480 something. It's been more than 12 hours and I haven't seen a single payout, I am going to leave it until I return from work today and if its not producing anything I am drop you in a heartbeat.

Sorry but when you make these radical changes you have to understand it's not always for the best. People who make tried to make things better even though things are working just fine have lost their shirts.

I haven't made any change at all. It has always worked this way.

It's not that it isn't producing anything. Please read the link I posted it explains how the payouts work.

From site:
"Your work is recorded in shifts. When we create a new block you get a share of the income proportional to how much of the work in the last 10 completed shifts is yours."

Why is it good to have ~1h shifts?

Average block finding rate should be ~4h
Calculations:
Diff*2^32/hashrate/time in seconds
1418481395*2^32/420000000000000/3600 = ~4(h)

Now we are having ~20h run to get block and there has been way more than 10 shifts in it - some of our effort will be lost now. Maybe shifts should be 4h or smt like that? Roll Eyes

Shifts were 40 minutes when I joined.  You can view the complete shift history back to the beginning of bitminter.  It's a constant amount of work, not a constant amount of time.

And the fact of the matter is that when we work together for a long time without finding a block, none of us get rewarded.  It's as simple as that, and no tweaks to the rules can change it.  When we don't find a block, work is "lost," period.  Work doesn't automatically have value.

Also from the site "Work is measured in proofs of work. Each proof of work is given a score equal to one divided by the difficulty at the time it was submitted. Proofs of work are grouped in shifts. A shift is completed when its total score passes 0.4. Whenever new coins are minted, they are divided between contributing members proportionally to the total score each member has within the last 10 completed shifts. If you are logged in you can see your score in each shift."

The speed a shift is completed in is related to the pool hash rate. When the difficulty goes up each shift takes longer. When our hash rate goes up each shift get shorter. Make sense?

No work or effort was lost. Your payout for that 20 hour block was based on the work you completed in the past 10 shifts prior to finding it. It was an unlucky block which sucks but I'd recommend doing some research on how mining and this pool work Smiley

Months ago when I started at BM I too felt the same way when the pool was going through a spate of bad luck blocks.

After understanding how it all works, I came back and stayed here ever since (at least as long as I could connect as I have a fickle ISP).

I remember those days where the pool had only 5 TH and we were getting 2-3 blocks a day but it has all been good for me.  I will be an overstayer here as long as my miners are still running.

What radical changes? Did you read the post doc linked you to? He (and no one else) can change the luck of the pool. We had not too much luck lately, but that's just how it is.

Did the difficultly increase by 4 or 5 times in the last couple of days? I have seen my payouts go from 8 a day up until the 30th of December to 7 on the 31st, and only 3 today, it's 7:30PM EST where I am.

Variance will affect daily payouts. More info: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.2769824

All my workers seem to regularly fall back from the stratum pool to the getwork pool, but rarely fall back to my 3rd pool. Does the stratum access keep going down?

I have been mining just fine here for months but now it is getting worse all the time.  I have 3 bad shifts in the last 10 now.  I think I am going to mine elsewhere for a while.

Try organofcorti's suggestion. See if it's switching to backup pool or failing completely.

More crap shifts when the pool produces blocks....

I know that feel bro, I blew a PSU last week when we had that awesome lucky day...

Isn't it always like that?  We always have the lucky streaks when something goes wrong on my machines!

Something bad is happening here.  I continue to see abnormally low shifts every 6 or 8 hours which is keeping my 10 shift average lower than it should be.  I am still not catching it when it is happening but I keep checking and finding that shifts are reporting my contributions a good 40% less than they should be which leads me to believe I am being disconnected.  My miner is using stratum not getwork.

Try using a backup to another pool. That will let you know if the dropouts are at your end or BitMinters, and if it's at BitMinter's end, you won't lose anything.
