I think you need to look at XEM, Ardor and Monero. These coins are good to buy now, and they have a great future in my opinion.

I would buy some BTC, ETH and also 3rd generation of cryptos like ADA and IOTA.

There are also smaler coins where you can start without money and by participating in bounty programs you can actually earn a lot. I earned 675 VIBs just from yesterday, that is the Viberate token. And I spent about 20 minutes doing this. In 2 weeks I got about 4k VIB. That is about 350 euros right now.

One of the safest ways to invest in cryptocurrency is that you have to research the bitcoin or altcoin you will invest. If you think litecoin is safe for you to invest, invest in litecoins, cause you know it. I think that makes the investment unsafe is you invest but don't understand the character you are investing.

Blockchain will change the world.
I would split it this way!

50% Ethereum (ETH)
15% Litecoin (LTC)
10% NEM (XEM)
10% NEO (NEO)
10% Waves (WAVES)
05% Golem (GNT)

Which is a safe coin to invest in the long term?
How long should I hold it?

Is there a risk that I might lose it all?

I am a noob in cryptocurrencies. Help.  Huh

I was thinking Litecoin, is it a good idea?

Of course there's a risk and no Alt coins is safe it is still prone to dump their value . Maybe try to invest it on bitcoin, Ethereum and other promising ICO but better research everything before you invest.

Don't put all eggs into one basket.
Divide the money into two or three parts and invest in different directions for example, bonds, shares, bitcoin.
This good a must follow that we have diversify our investment. Always spread investment in other altcoin that is good future like ethereum, litecoin, xrp and neo. Though still depends on your jurisdiction on which you will invest.

My suggestion for you to inevst in bitcoin for long term instead to go with another altcoins Because investment in altcoins is a tredious thing to make profit Because sometimes we need really a long time to wait for investment in altcoins to get profit .
But still beside to make income from the increase of price of bitcoin , you should invest in Etherium , bitcoin gold , ripple , monero , Digibyte , dash etc these are those coins having price lower averagly , so you can see that if you will invest today then in short and long term both side you can make profit easily .
But still you should be careful that to invest in altcoins is not safe than what we have safety of our money in bitcoin .

If you want to invest all of that amount in one coin then i would probably say Bitcoin, but i recommend you invest in multiple altcoins, such as Ether, Ripple and Stellar, as these have good potential to give out good profit.

Ripple recently surged almost 90% in a single day to become the 3rd biggest digital currency which is quite an achievement for Ripple. It's quite impressive because this coin can reach $1 or $2 dollars especially after news of the $100mil hedgefund being thrown into it, so I'd say Ripple definitely is a coin to look at.

There is no safe coin to invest in crypto market but if we invest on popular coins the risk factor of losing our investment is less.

Yeah LTC is better option for long term investment but never invest all money in single coin you just split your investment,I suggest you 30% in LTC,30% in bitcoin and 40% in ETH.There is high chance of ethereum price bump in the coming years so it is better to invest more amount in ethereum.

First I want to say that there is a risk in any cryptocurrency.
I would advise you to invest something like this:
50% in Bitcoin;
25% in Litecoin;
25% in the Ethereum.
I think that it is necessary to make long-term investments in these crypto-currencies.

Every investment, whether offline or online, poses risks, albeit calculated ones. I would hedge 30% of your investment into Bitcoin, LItecoin, Neo and Ethereum, the rest put into some nice revenue promising, generating tokens and coins. I have a small investment in PPT, which is an invoice factoring business. I also invested in two tokens COB AND COSS, which are two exchanges. Also TRADE.IO is another huge exchange opening with revenue generating abilities and REALISTO is a real estate roi generating token, also in it's ICO phase.

As others have said, very few altcoins can be considered "safe". If you want to play safe, invest in btc, or maybe also in eth. But for the rest of the altcoins, although you can make educated guesses and hope for the best, their prices can go anywhere.

Safe? Nope, no coin is 100% safe and risk free, any coin you invest in there will be at least 1% chance that you will lose almost all your money. It's very unlikely to lose all of your money if you take action in right time and cut your losses, but you don't want to cut losses but make profit right? Best I would suggest is to invest in any one of the popular coins, BTC ETH LTC etc, maybe split evenly in all three are put all money in one depends on you. As soon as the value increase significantly you sell enough coins to get back your initial investment of $12k, then whatever remains of your coins you can hold them for lifetime without worries.

There is no safe investment in the space, if you must invest just pick those coins in the top 10 marketcap for now and start studying those coins with low marketcap later, it is very easy to make money here but not also easy to lose if you don't make intelligent decision
