XRP is stronger than ADA because the price keep stable after dump, but for ADA the price was keep down after dump. In fundamental analysis XRP also better than ADA and also with others altcoin, we can see right now XRP is become second coin on the coin marketcap. XRP also has working product and partnership with many third party that will increase the demand.
Both are great top rated coins and good choices so give any that is easier to send and receive. Both should be safe to hold for long term growth.
I am very impressed with your idea the fact that you want to give cryptocurrency to your friend and he will like it is very cool! that's why crypto currencies have a great future, many are willing to receive such a gift, I suggest to give 2 of these coins, because they have a good future and they can grow in price. 
By supply, cardano is better than xrp. So with less supply than xrp, the price of cardano has a higher potential than xrp. However, that does not mean XRP has no potential.
At the moment I would choose Ripple, but I also believe that ADA is a good coin, so I would buy both of them.

I would simply go for half of each. You never know which one will work good in the long run.
Both of them are very good as project. Cardano is a platform based token. But it is very innovative and they have some great devs some good advisors and partner. In otherside ripple is a payment and banking related token. Ripple is backed by banks some of them trying to use the technology of ripple. They are also have some great partners and a team. but the problem with ripple is they are very much centralized. So if i have to pick one to leave i will go for ripple. Cause i think that cardano has more potential than ripple in upcoming future. i am not a advisor do your own research and take the right decision.
I WOULD still BUY ripple as the project is very promising, and in General has a huge potential,and now many are trying to use the maximum possible to invest and buy these altcoins, plus they have a lot of partnerships with banks and other structures, so all is well)

If I had to choose between these two projects, unfortunately I would not choose any of them. I believe that both of these projects are too much bloated, and their prospects are far from as brilliant as many think. These are old projects. I am more attracted to new projects.
The question is actually very interesting, because the BTT community in most cases supports ADA but does not support XRP despite the fact that the XRP is a project that still holds and shows good results.

If you are going to be giving any of these out as birthday gift, then your friend must see himself as being fortunate to have you as a friend, because those two amounts are huge. Both coins have got some potentials, which are going to bring some profits in future. Although, i am not a fan to XRP, but sure its a wonderful gift.
