@KTChampions, This is true. Portugal does have decent players, but not on the same level of players that teams like France, Germany, Belgium have. Ronaldo alone can only do much for them. Just have a look at the France team right now. Or the Belgium team. They are stacked with star players. Not that Portugal doesn't have star players, but a lot less than these teams. So finishing third in the Euro 21 group stage is not that bad as there were teams like France and Germany in the group.
France, England, Germany and Belgium are stacked with star players. But how many of them are from native families? These countries are just stealing talent from poor African nations and strengthening their national side. Portugal doesn't have to do that, as they have enough talent in their country. Imagine how strong the Congolese national team would have been, if Romelu Lukaku was playing for them instead of Belgium. The same goes for Guinea (Paul Pogba) and Cameroon (Kylian Mbappé).
I think these are personal decisions and that these players should not be blamed for that.
Each of them had to make a difficult decision and I guess each of them made the decision that was best for him, and chose a national team in which they can achieve better sports results.
Now I remembered the case of Rakitic, a Croat born in Switzerland.
In the junior categories he played, as far as I remember, for the Swiss national teams, and he played in the Swiss football championship, but he always felt like a Croat and that’s how his parents raised him.
When he received the invitation to play for the senior national team of Croatia, he said that he could not refuse the invitation, although he knew that he would greatly disappoint all the people in Switzerland.
Because of this, many people in Switzerland attacked him, declared him a traitor and his family was under a lot of pressure.
None of us can know and understand how difficult it is to make decisions like this and therefore it is wrong to attack players for it.
Even if some of these footballers played for African national teams, it would not help these national teams to achieve better results, but world football would be poorer because such magnificent players would not be seen on the world stage.
