As we can see, buying and holding can not always be a good strategy. First of all, you need to try to understand why this happened. For investment, as well as for trade, you need to have a strategy.
For example, here is one of the investor’s tactics:
if for some time your asset becomes cheaper, a part can be exchanged for BTC or for $;
then, if with some time the asset does not fall, you can later exchange it back (with profit or more coins).

Folks, what a terrible year 2018 has been so far. I invested around 60K and now left with 5K. I did terrible mistakes and I hope there would be a turnaround sometime next year or so. Any suggestions?

There is no one that did not take a bash this year, it is just that it varies from investor to investor because some people decided to cut their loss early and sitdon look. Ethereum lost more than 90% from ATH, BTC lost more then 83% from ATH. The issue you can be concern aboutnow is if the tokens you are holding are not shitcoin and have future and can turn out to be the Amazon of the dot.com

Forget about the past OP and start a fresh investment in this market . You would get multiple times returns from this market in next few months itself. Do stay invested in Good top coins only now and do not take risk of buying low price coins or ICO as you are in loss already .

Are you serious? why at that time did you not cut loss and prefer to keep hodl them? you should it not take this decision because sometimes hodl isn't the best solution. Because the value of your investment has dropped by almost 95% it seems very difficult to recover, unless you have a reserve fund to increase the number of portfolio. But this still does not guarantee that your capital will return fully.
If he didn't serious, do you think he will create this thread?
Also, down from 60k to 5k isn't almost 95%, actually it's still ~92%.

@Op, can you tell us which coin / token you HOLD atm? So we can give our opinion whether it could be back or not to the price you have bought

Most of the portfolio is down by 90% in dollar amount. I Bought BTC,ETH, LTC, WAN, ZIL, BLZ, NAS, DRGN, AION, NEBL, NANO, STRAT, ELF, ENG and UTK  Angry

Since from the start we know already the finacial condition of crypto and its being volatile but still you eagerly spend your money and investing here. We are definitely losing us the market dumps like these but we cant blame no one cause we are the one handling our money.  Now, you find ways and makes your mistake as a tool to create strategic plan in all market conditions.

Spend some months on reading books about financial markets and how they move. Also take a study about trading and develop a strategy, babypips is good and free for a start.

Learn from that moment but it really taught you the rough way which is very hard to accept. Such amount of losses can make you stop of believing and speculating to this market. But I think you know this consequence from the very start when you started to invest right?

I'm into losses as well, compare to yours it might not too big but for me its already big enough to address my emotion and grieving. Be positive though its hard to be in that mode but it will help you to remain skeptic because of your losses. Keep on filling your bags while the market isn't so good.

As horrible as 2018 has been. I think you only have one option at this point.

Forget your 55K loss. Delete all trading history. Delete all traces of your original principal and failed investing. Delete every crypto app you have on your phone.

Go out for a long walk.

Come back the next day...and start from scratch. Redownload all the apps, and make sure they are blank.

Start with a few hundred bucks and dip your toe back in. Because truth be told...who cares where crypto has been, it only matters where it is going. With 90% + losses, the upside potential far outweighs the downside at this point. So now is a good time to dip your toes back in. But you MUST erase the past. That’s over with.

(Also next time, only out in money you can afford to lose)

Do this...and I think 2019 will be good to you.

Without knowing your mistakes it's hard to say. You should invest in some solid and well reputed coins and do not for one second consider chasing your losses. Forget that you lost 55k and just pretend you started with 5k. That will help you to make sound and sensible decisions.

How did it happened? Did you sell your coins in a losing price? If you hold your coins then somehow you can recover a little amount until such time that their price will return to your buying price. Losing 55k$ is a huge money for me...and if you want to recover those loses you need to invest on ETH or BTC as this are fast to recover their prices but the volatility will be a big factor.

there is nothing wrong with making a mistake but insisting on keeping to make that mistake is wrong. instead you should have learned from your mistakes!
what you did is called "bag holding". you simply held on to worthless dumping altcoins that you bought on top of their pumping period and never sold until you ended up losing 91% of your money!!!
that is ridiculous!
a mistake would have been bag holding until you lose about 20 or 30% of your money and then learned from that mistake then and there.

my suggestion is that you should NOT come back to the market unless you analyze your bag holding mistakes and are sure that you wouldn't repeat them again. otherwise you will lose another 90% next year too.

You need to be patience mate Don't lose hope hold your assets don't sell it at lose,it's to late now if you sell your tokens what you need to do now is to hold your tokens until you will recover your losses because today we can see a good market and almost of the token prices is slightly recovering.

Just HODL, it would be the best what you can do now. Or if you have more money to spend, than buy more and follow dollar cost averaging strategy. But this strategy has one negative point: you have to believe in next grow.

One saying is that if you didn't sell, you didn't lose (yet). But if the drop is from 60k to 5k it looks like you may have chosen badly the assets to invest in. And then you may have to re-check everything thoroughly. I hope that you did diversify and I hope that you can still find some worthy assets between those you invested in. Those should rise again since now the money seems to flow back in these markets.

So the options are, in no particular order:
* keep holding and hoping that you'll recover in 1-2 years
* sell some of the assets you see they don't stand a chance anymore and maybe buy some better ones
* sell everything, cry for a while and start earning money from something you are better at - investing in crypto seems not to be your strong point

Of course, I hope that this was money you afford to lose and you do have a stable source of income.
And of course, these are things to read and maybe get some ideas, however, you should make your own decisions when investing.
