i am confused because you said 2x 7970 = 1050w, now you say 4x 7970 = 1200w, which does sound a lot better...  maybe i read something wrong?

(edit) whoops, wrong link   Roll Eyes
http://www.techspot.com/review/663-amd-radeon-hd-7990/page8.html

that review shows 7990 at 491w under stress, which is about what i expected from it

thcst8, did you turn off ulps and change voltage?  that made a huge difference for my temps.  i could run at standard voltage but it got up into the 90's in no time at all.  at lowered voltage it runs 83 all the time
whole system
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7990/23.html
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_hd_7990_review,8.html
4x7970 = 1200W at wall (whole system include cpu, hdd, psu efficient...)
2x7990 = 1050W at wall (___________________________________) 1.08volt
psu efficient = 88%
combo cpu,hdd,...etc ~ 50W

you should install 13.1 instead of 13.4  Roll Eyes, uninstall in control panel, and then using driver sweeper to "clear" again Cheesy
trust me Smiley), 7990 is as same as 2 7970s

if it is the same, why am i only pulling ~600w?  not trying to be a smartass, just wanting to understand all the inner workings of it  Grin  i am downloading 13.1 to try out now...

@mass another dumb question how do you know you have "Sapphire 7990 (Tahiti)"?  I thought both GPU's were tahiti but the combined board and GPU is called Malta.

Also why do you use "cgminer 3.1.1/ catalyst 13.4" I think i have cgminer 3.4/catalyst 13.8".

Should I downgrade?

I'm asking because I can't really stabilize this card and I've tried several settings.

i am using cg 3.1.1 because i just copied it from the other mining rig, was too lazy to go re download.  ditto on the drivers, i have about 5 or 6 different versions on my usb drive, but 13.1 wasn't among them  Cheesy  i say tahiti because when i look at the devices available in guiminer (i don't use guiminer, but i have it  Roll Eyes ) it reads as tahiti.  maybe the board is called malta and it reads as tahiti because it is just 2 of them on one 'malta' board?

i did use 13.8 and didn't have any luck with it so yes i would downgrade.  not sure about cgminer, probably fine there but downgrade the driver.  13.4 was working well for me and i am going to try 13.1 in a few minutes.  did you turn off ulps and undervolt it?  what are your temps / settings?
i have tested my 7970s too,using kill a wat
4x7970s run on P31+775 dualcore ~ 1200W at wall
but i still have one problem that i dont understand clearly
from techpowerup review,7970 ~ 270W,7990 ~ 350W
when mining,7970 ~ 250-300W (depend on which voltage )..it's normal, power consumption is as same as techpowerup's review
but 1 7990 ~ 500-600W  Huh Huh

win7 64 bit / 13.4 ccc...  i have tried a few different driver versions without much difference, not sure if i did 13.1 though.  new system installed windows less than a week ago  Grin  I can always go back and give 13.1 a try to make sure though.

i know this is 2x 7970 on one board, but it's not quite the same as 2x actual 7970.  my killawatt reads about 230w at startup, 150w idle, and is bouncing around between 600-620w while mining.  so the card is definitely pulling less than 500w...  maybe 400-450w? not sure how i can test the card independently of the rest of the system.  it looks like i will need to go with a new psu if i add another 7990, but i knew i probably would anyway.

(edit)  just for reference, my 4x 7950 system pulls about 1.1kw and hashes at twice the speed of this 7990.... so it is right about where i was guessing it would be

shaders 2048 thread concurrency 24000 g 2 w 256 i 20

i have seen a lot of people suggesting 8192 but i get hw errors with it
-I 13 tc 8192 -g 2 that's all you need
i dont know what the f*ck is going on...on techpowerup,guru3d..and all the others site, power consumption of 7990 is about 350-380W
but when we tested 7990 with scrypt mining, the real power consumption was ~ 1050W (at 1.08volt,speed 720khash per core) ...
it's ridiculous because ref 7990 has 2 8pins =300w,pci-e = 75W....

 Huh Huh Huh

i tried those same settings...  hw errors for me at 8192 tc no matter what the intensity / clock speeds or other settings... weird.

that power consumption can't be right.  i am running mine on a 1000w psu with an 8 core cpu, 32gb ram, wifi, and a 1tb hdd.  if the card alone were pulling that much power the system wouldn't be stable.  guess i better plug it into the killawatt and see what my system really pulls while mining.  some of the reviews i read put this card at 500w under load, i'll post back with my readings in a bit
hmm...have you tried to reinstall your windows yet ?
Install Windows 7 or 8 (32/64bit,up to you) --> 13.1 CCC (you only need to install sdk and driver) ->start cgminer with those settings
if possible, you can give me your Teamviwer ID,i will config 4u Cheesy
//~ 1050W for 2 7970 at wall

word of warning...  setting up mining was the first thing i did with my new setup.  after that i started setting up my steam account and downloading in my games.  the game installations changed my registry back to enabled ulps.  so i had to cycle thru the registry again and change all those back to zero in order to mine again.  if you install a game be sure to double check your registry before mining

yea, just let me know if you need a hand, i can probably dig some useful links out of my history.

basically, you will install catalyst / drivers and msi AB latest BETA.  reboot. open regedit and search for enableulps then change every value you find to 0.  it takes a while, just keep cycling thru (F3) and changing until regedit tells you it found them all.  then make sure AB is closed and go find that atipdlxx.dll.  put it in the AB program folder.  reboot. now you (hopefully) can change the voltage on your card with AB.

there are other methods but of course the last one i try is the only one that worked for me. ymmv  Wink

i have seen people post hashrates up in the high 1400's kh/s, but mostly 12-1300's.... as we know all cards are different so let me know what you can get out of yours.

as of right now I am hashing with the above posted settings, voltage 1.08, g 1, core 1050 mem 1675, avg 1.333mh/s, temps 83/74, running for over 4 hours now.  if i try to bump the mem clock to 1700 it works fine for a while at 1.35mh/s and locks up after an hour or 2, even at voltage 1.1, so I guess I am squeezing all I can out of this one.

not exactly.  I was changing my settings bit by bit to see what I could do and it kept locking up on me.  doesn't look like I can get any more out of it. I did have it up over 1.4 but it was not at all stable and 1.35mhs but it would run fine for a few hours then crash which I thought was weird.... so no, I'm still working out all the kinks but I think my original numbers were pretty close

It's great for what it is... 2 cards on one slot.  But because those 2 cards are automatically crossfired together it becomes a huge pain to disable the power management and make them clock/hash the way you want them to.  There are several methods to make it work and everybody seems to have different rates of success with the different methods.  Like I said, now that it works, I am happy  Grin  but getting there was no fun.  On the flipside, because I had to do all that I should be able to crossfire in the next card, if I add a second one, and I will be all set for both gaming and mining with no need to switch configurations or cables.  My case has one empty fan slot left which I will probably need to use and just hope that the whole thing will stay cool enough while closed.  Cross that bridge when we get there I guess, gotta mine for a while before I can get a second card Wink  Overall I would recommend it though, especially for part time gaming since it comes with 8 games.

Just don't buy them all up before I can get my second one!  Cheesy
