That's a good thing to hear.

Indeed the number of people affected was small, but it was a bit terrifying how impossible it seemed for anyone to get their new account back. Even when you had everything you needed to prove it was indeed your account...

Thanks theymos, this is a nice Christmas gift.  I added a note and the links to the two threads at the OP of [Guide] Bitcointalk account security and its Japanese translation thread.

I was trying to translate the OP (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/recovering-hackedlost-accounts-5089777) for my local board, since it's an important topic for all to see, but I'm having issues when trying to include the recovery email in a forum post:

A trimmed version of the email appears on screen when previewing the post: [email protected] (recoveries_2019_ [email protected] -> with a space just to be able to post it here).

Any idea why it trims characters? (it seems to interpret the email and does something weird with it, whilst the OP does not have that issue).

Thanks.

I was having the same problem. Apparently, it is a security option to make it difficult to copy and past and require the link to the original post.

I translated to Portuguese the two posts for account recovery. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/novo-processo-de-recuperacao-de-contas-traducao-post-theymos-5089888

Thank you Santa theymos. It's a great Christmas gift to forum users. I believe that many of hacked users already lost hope to get account back, so these news is like a miracle for them.
I read your post in new pinned thread and I want to ask, is it there are something new about bans?
Quote
Your ban message may have an email address which you can email. If not, then the ban cannot be appealed.
It means that email address are shown not for all banned users and they don't have right to appeal? Or this ban appeal email aren't shown just for temporrary banned users?

Ok, great. I’ve added, as you indicated, the reference to the recovery email, with the indirection to your original post so as to maintain validity in case of recovery email change.

Thanks.

Rather than copying the email address, please just say "the email address in theymos's post" or similar. These email addresses will be periodically cycled, so if you copy it, it'll stop working eventually.

Thanks.

Thank you santa theymos for this.

This is a basic functionality of any website/forum.

Even if I am fortunate enough that I have never needed it, I fear it might happen one time.

A bit off topic (not sure): How about the script you were writing we heard from the PM of one of the member (qwk i guess)?

Not sure what you're referring to. One thing I'm working on (maybe for release in the first half of 2019, not sure) is a proper address-staking system. The main point of this would be to replace the current ad hoc address staking situation and safely allow opting out of any of: long-term IP log retention; email password recoveries; or manual recoveries. Automatic recoveries using a staked address is possible, but not much on my mind right now.

I was referring to that too. Here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.43837185

We don't actually accept the profile field address unless there's some sort of proof that it's remained unchanged, for that very reason.

I'm working on a new address-staking system which will automatically handle signatures, etc. Might have it ready by the end of the month if nothing else comes up to consume my time.
Good to hear another new possible date by the way Grin

You know that there are many appeal-threads where users already provided their signed message. The hacker will simply create a new email and copy paste the signed message.

That's why signed messages for account recoveries have to include the desired new email and a date.

I have something in my mind and I want to be reassured:
If the owner of a locked account send an appeal from a new email, will you unlock his account?

edit: the user provides a signed message.

If a signature is provided, probably. But each case needs to be considered separately.

I don't know if what I said make sense but it would be better to only accept appeals from the original email the user used to register or to accept only newly signed messages.

We've streamlined our processes, and Cyrus has put together a team for handling these cases, so account recoveries should now be handled at a reasonable pace again. Additionally, we will be somewhat more lenient in recovering accounts without signatures, though signatures often will still be required, depending on the situation.

If you have a locked account, send a new email to the @bitcointalk.org email address given in your "account locked" error message. (The email address changed a few weeks ago.) If you were previously sending messages to me or Cyrus, send a new email to the address here. We might try to go through the backlog of old-process recoveries in the future, but for now you should send new messages.

Sorry for the delay!
That should be okay knowing that very few people are dealing with it. This is something needed to be done long ago. I was having a feeling that something is going on when I saw this post (Recovering hacked/lost accounts) earlier today.

I believe it would depend on whether or not the user has a signed message, there has to be something with which to prove that you indeed owned that account.

It is very thoughtful of the admin to be lenient and consider accounts without signatures. Every user however should endeavour to sign a message as soon as they can.

Thanks admin, eventually you have proved again that you care about us. Its a great decision to recover old account before implement to new recovery system. Really it was most important subject since we meet the merit system. I don't know why there is security question if not possible recover account by this. Only for lock account ? If that then hacker can change question after change password. Because many account locked by security question. However thanks again for this step and waiting for new recovery system.

And any update about reporter badge? Or it will be new year gift ? Wink . Its long time you have made post about reporter badge. It might help keep forum more spam free because people will encourage to report spam post.
