That explains why Bitblender had to shut down voluntarily and hurriedly wiped of their servers  Grin Grin
They must have smelt a rat on realizing the gravity of the situation.  I never used bestmixer but it's quite surprising that they kept transaction logs
They may have kept transaction logs, but this is *probably* irrelevant here. The police didn't just immediately shutdown their servers. They kept it running as a honeypot for a while to gather these logs. Bestmixer didn't necessarily hold them before (while they weren't runned by the police).

I guess this will have a controversial impact over mixing services in general. Let's wait and see what will happen next.  Smiley

Two guys were arrested Monday by the Dutch police. They were accused for Money Lundering.
The two guys have been traced by Dutch authorities after they used bestmixer mixer and authorities has already a copy of the servers and logs after shutting down the mixer one year ago.

For those looking for alternatives, it's time to stop using centralized mixers and switch to P2P solutions such as WasabiWallet (disclaimer, I'm not affiliated to wasabi in any way Cheesy)

1. criticize and talk bullshit about other mixers security

2. say your mixer is a most secure mixer on the world and server is behind multiple reverse proxies

3. get backend server+domain seized just right after 6 months

Huh

profit, must be

How did they manage to get access to letters of guarantee? Weren't they supposed to be deleted 24 hours after transaction got confirmed?

The investigation started last year, I'm guessing like with some darknet markets, the Dutch police decided they'll run the service themselves for a while to glean some information from people using the service. Or they managed to locate bestmixer's servers and install a backdoor.

Interesting... So I got PM from the Dutch Police. Shocked
Nah, the owner account wouldn't be in the forum to post during all the months, and to defend his trust feedback  They took access to the site no more than 1 month before. And to be honest, I have a little conviction to say he is still here...running a mixer....

I was wondering about that too,
the service started to operate in march 2018 as we can clearly tell by the OP date
then I see under the seize warning, dutch law enforcement has started investigation in june 2018
so only 3 months after its operation, they already suspicious of this service? Undecided
maybe the creator of this service has been in the watch-list of dutch cyber police from the beginning

The most interesting thing is that there's no information about anyone arrested with the case.
Means the author is probably still here?

Does this mean that the campaign advertisers were paid by the government so they are entitled to free healthcare and other benefits?  Grin Grin
Joking aside, the situation is pretty serious because innocent people who just wanted some privacy and hide their connection to a public address will get get in the same mess as some using it to really wash "dirty" coins.

And as Murphy's laws have told us so many times, I'm willing to bet that those who knew they were doing some totally wrong have taken enough measures to remain hidden while the innocents will get tracked in two seconds. The second bet is that the ones mixing a few mbits now and then have also used their direct internet connection and they have a static ip for months also:P

This is a real possibility - and makes you wonder if Chipmixer isn't already, or hasn't always been ran by some goverment agency.
This is also why some people recommend using multiple mixing services, one after another,

And what if all the mixers are run by government agencies that share their data?

~

I don't want to play the "I told you so" card, as who knows, Chipmixer could be next (or might even be a honeypot by now.), but it has been fairly obvious that Bestmixer.io promised a lot - but failed to deliver on most things.

I wouldn't be surprised if they lied about keeping logs etcetera. (Why.. I don't know.., Gross incompetence?) Afterall, their servers were located in Europe- and seized.

Just as they claimed Chipmixer wasn't working (with some sheer bullshit evidence), Wasabiwallet wasn't working... Coinjoin wasn't working.. But their mixing method was "revolutionary"...
Well, guess what...

I tried to stay out of it because it was obvious since I am advertising CM my opinion would be a bit biased but TheNewAnon135246 questioned them a lot of times about all the (now we can really call it bs) they claimed and never got a real answer, just beating around the bush

And, most importantly, since our service is completely anonymous and we are answerable to no one but the client whom we serve, we will do whatever is necessary to keep the confidentiality of every transaction regardless of where in the world they originate from or what the government policies in those countries may be.

Ironic....

This is also why some people recommend using multiple mixing services, one after another, but there aren't many mixing services which can handle a large amount of coins.

Or don't do any criminal business! Roll Eyes

I'm a bit mixed about this situation...
With the uncertainty around taxation of cryptocurrencies and the usual over-taxation which is put upon people for every action they do, having anonymity is appealing and great; I see it as a precaution to avoid a possible "legal theft" from governments.
On the other hand, people who deal on drugs, hitmen, c*** pornography or overall hurt other people, then those guys should be caught. No one should want them in the cryptocurrency world because they only make a bad name of it.

How the hell did the prosecutors manage to get the location details?

The investigation gathered information regarding transactions between customers and Bestmixer.io. The customers are located all over the world, especially in the US, Germany and the Netherlands. The FIOD will analyse the information together with Europol. After that the data will be shared with other countries.

The first part is pretty bad. Second is even worse.

How the hell did the prosecutors manage to get the location details?
So they've kept the info like any diligent bank, ip and everything.

I'm waiting for the first mixer that requires KYC /s
