Ok...here's today's official update on progress toward CAT's 2nd and hopefully final fork.

The hold-up for the past few days has been the ability (or lack thereof) of compiling a wallet for Windows.

This challenge has almost been overcome.  Today I finished the development software/compiling environment, and collected and compiled all the programs and libraries needed to compile the Windows wallet.  Tomorrow I'll get the sourcecode from Hozer and compile a windows wallet for the testnet.

Thanks for your help today Maverickthenoob, hozer, zerodrama, Blaksmith, and skillface - damn nice team we've got here. Cheesy

Once this is confirmed to work (expect to hear from me tomorrow), we'll be ready to make any final adjustments and roll-out the final code for the fork.

So, ladies and gents, warm up your GPUs and find your passwords for your favourite pool and exchanges - it's almost CATtime. Wink

Andy

Cool news andy, go on with your work and bring it to end. Longs time of disscussions are over. You can not find a result everybody is fine with. Without doing anything it will die. Its boring and frusttrating reading all the last pages of discussing. If you have technical now how - DO IT, as fast as possible.

There are so much other coins out and with CAT a lot of people will find a association to it because the love real cats and they see how DOGE comes more and more to a real investment. But for that it has to work. The most people even do not understand anything related to how coins work. Transfer must be quick and easyly. With wating hours and hours and getting afraid losing coins during transfer new users will stay away after first try.
I always support CAT in the past in by mining and buying them and not sold only one. I also will do in future, but only it it works fine.

Maybe somebody can write up a nice vivid story about how someone bought into Bitcoins when it was less than a dollar each when most people didn't know about it, people were mining it with video cards then; then the prices went way up and the same person cashed out and bought a nice big house; and how catcoin is about that price now, and has the same scarcity and is now mined with video cards just like bitcoins were (bitcoins now having moved onto asics), and who knows where it will go? or something like that.

We should contact Bter to add cat coin for exchange. One of the reason the price keep dropping is no many Chinese investor aware about cat coin. If they start buying cat coin then I am sure the price will drive up very quickly.

Agree Percy - could you take care of that perhaps? Maybe you can write to bter / BTC38 or find someone who does that for CAT? Would be awesome!

I am also trying to find some local contacts...

Status Update on Catcoin

Despite some of the emotional posts that have been seen in this thread the past few days, efforts to mitigate and fix the coin code is proceeding smoothly, and everyone who has contributed any actual code to be implemented or proposed to be implemented are working together on good terms with an emerging consensus on the best way forward.

Please rest assured that even though more than one proposal has been put forth, there are no competing camps pushing to unilaterally implement competing forks to the coin. All are in agreement that even if there is not agreement on what is the absolute best thing to implement, it is better to have consensus on what may be the second or third best option for the next step than try to insist on the absolute best option at the expense of consensus. I believe any of the proposed code is better than what we have right now.

Thank you,

Etblvu1

I will listen to the voice of the many, not the voice of the few. Only mutual agreement will save Catcoin. As simple as that.

I'm still in favour of implementing the Kimoto Gravity Well for Catcoin's long term future, but until I know what the current official plan is, I can't really say if I like it or not. There's been some heavy technical discussions, so it's very hard to follow what the plan is.

As soon as we can, we should stop the bleeding and buy more time to fix the coin.  So poke out couple of days which solution will be better when we know that both will work now does not make sense. Soon we will have nothing to be repaired

Hozer have working, prepared sollution so for what we waiting?

I have absolutely no idea what's going on anymore. Could explain in simple terms what's happening? TL:DR.
Nullu,  I've done my best to communicate to all involved exactly what's happening.   We have a fix, it's being tested on a testnet.  As soon as we can get a windows wallet compiled we can notify everyone and we can fork.

Unfortunately, the battle isn't being lost to compilers and code, it's being lost to a member here that's continuing to sow discontent here in public after he was tossed from the dev area.

Please please please everyone - get your information from one of the active developers:  Maverickthenewb, hozer, zerodrama, or skillface.

etblvu1 is working against the wishes of the devs and against the wishes of this community.  His plan has been critiqued here for weeks and has been found to be unacceptable by all that have a clue about ALL crypto - not just about CAT.  I ignore him on IRC and I highly recommend that everyone ignore him here as well.

I'm sorry folks - this royally sucks.  After all we've done and all we've got through it would be really sad to lose the cat because of the ego of a single forum member.  Please do not let that happen.

In the future we may allow some ranges to allow dynamic updates without having a massive network update necessary. Then we can make updates like gravity wells (which I contemplated way back when feathercoin was attacked) easy. For now this seems to do the trick:

1 block retarget
36 average
12% difficulty limit

The windows wallet compiling process really needs to be improved.

I've been hanging out on IRC as well as in here and even I'm confused about what's going on half the time. I can only imagine how much of a clusterfuck this would seem like to the average person browsing this thread.

Its been educational.   Cheesy

It has also been encouraging.  I appreciate the effort that has been devoted towards reviving CAT.  To that end, I did as I said I would and re bought CAT last night. I think after word of this second, more well considered fork gets out the price will rise and that the dip a day ago was the bottom.

Totally agree with kisa2005. We all want cat coin to be very success so please work together and solve the difference by a mature way.

Also agreed.

Not to nitpick etblvu1, but it's 2016 not 1016.

I have an answer to your concern about price increases: usage paths other than dumping. If the price jumps and the coins are produced at a consistent rate above the 10 minute level, that's ok. I have uses for this coin that will take the coin elsewhere, other than dumping. A rise in price will increase circulation rather than perpetuating the rabid monkey speculation trap we see elsewhere. At that point we will see that price increases temporary increase difficulty, but because coins are spent rather than dumped the deviation from 10 minute blocks will stimulate level headed business development.

The price increase is only a problem in a dump oriented currency. You will find that won't be the case once I've built the markets I intend to set up.

Thank you for catching that (1,016 vs 2,016), I made a typo and copied my own typo. I went back and edited it to fix the error.

I have since retracted my statement of concerns about insufficiently fast adjustment. At 12% adjustment per block, it would only take about 12 blocks to make the same 400% correction it now takes 36 blocks to take; and by the 41st block, the adjustment can reach 10,000% of the starting point. So I no longer have any concerns about there being insufficient flexibility as far as the 1 block / 36 block average / 12% limit formula. I am still concerned that this may not be the perfect solution since it does not directly address incentives, but that is a small concern compared to how the current software is behaving.

Yeah, if you follow the calculus, you'll see it's less flexible but more responsive. So in effect even your concern about inflation is resolved, because although it's less flexible, it's more responsive and that means they can't just milk us and leave us in shock, like they have been.
