Could you not provide an offer to do the work that OSM was insisting that Satoshi Labs was responsible for?
Actually I was doing this work. I fixed tons of mistakes.For me, CoinMap doesn't exist anymore.
Yes, this. Only hope that coinmap doesn't turn even more evil and goes on to remove all those very vulnerable OSM entries, destroying the value of the forks of the open source project that it was. Speaking of which, which is the best alternative to coinmap? One without the crappy heat-map and locked data?

Yes, I remember how much help you provided to everyone who asked questions in this thread, so it doesn't surprise me that you were trying to improve the data also.
I was similarly unimpressed with Armory when their retained legal counsel expressed a desire to use their free software license in order to create revenue. I carried on helping Armory, and will continue to do so until someone comes up with wallet software that rivals Armory's capabilities.
It seems a terrible waste to give up over something only as important as the licensing, some compromises are worth more than the alternative IMO. I guess it's up to everyone individually how you judge that trade-off; I don't want to tell you what you should do. I just wish we could all cooperate more, there's a lot of division in bitcoin recently, and it's not a healthy trend.

No, because of the discussions with OSM data team I described earlier.
Stemby, you seem very motivated by this issue. Could you not provide an offer to do the work that OSM was insisting that Satoshi Labs was responsible for? Someone acceding to OSM's proclivities would really improve the quality of the data, and in turn the coinmap/OSM services.

OSM has to acknowledge that coinmap also brings in new editors and I edited a lot more than just the 5 locations I added/removed. You could have opted for openness and instead you whine about lack of donations. Your choice but mine would have been to offer the OSM editing as a service.
Also I can only encourage all people to stay clear from coinmap's api unless the data is released under a permissive license that allows redistribution. Else you are at the mercy of coinmap charging for it tomorrow.

I fully agree here, perfectly formulated. But of course it is your choice, and I'm glad you spent all the time you did working on coinmap. It is (and was) a very useful service, indeed! In the future, I'll use OsmAnd's list of Bitcoin places instead.

It is, but not from my side. Coinmap users neglected to do proper checking and cleanup of the venues and OSM people were quite unhappy about it and stated it was my responsibility to keep the data clean. This was not possible, because of the lack of time and almost no donations to hire people to do that.
For example: what if someone wants to create android version for bitcoin places and most new nodes are added within coinmap? How is this going to auto-sync?
There is an api for that https://coinmap.org/api/, so apps can use that.

Objects are no longer stored in OpenStreetMap. I had quite a long discussion with OSM folks some time ago and they were not very happy about the low quality (missing addresses, etc). of Bitcoin-related OSM nodes. So I decided to do just one-way sync (from OSM to coinmap).
I think this is a big mistake. Low quality of Bitcoin-related OSM nodes should be removed by users directly within coinmap and that should also reflect OSM data.One-way sync doesn't make any sense to me... the only centralized database should be OSM database. For example: what if someone wants to create android version for bitcoin places and most new nodes are added within coinmap? How is this going to auto-sync?

Fact #1: During its 2 years of existence coinmap got only 1.9 BTC in donations ($435 at the moment). That hardly covered server running costs.
Fact #2: OSM data team started to hold me personally responsible for low quality bitcoin venues that started to appear in OSM. Some quotations from email discussions:
- "Please bear your responsibility in mind or people _will_ add incorrect data, and I will have no hesitation in setting up a bot to delete it instantly."
- "I would strongly recommend that you create your own database for businesses."
These were the two reasons led to the changes you see now ...
