Yes it's real Tor. It is natively integrated with the TOR network and always starts with TOR network.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how long did you wait for your wallet to syc? Mine takes up to 5 minutes to connect and start counting blocks. I updated the conf file and thought I had issues too, but after a while it connected and no dramas since.
