Well when another hard fork happens it will go down again. But since continuous projects are based in Eth it will increase again but never as high as bitcoin.
Can anybody explain how Proof of Stake will work? Currently there are miners who run computations for smart contracts. Will proof-of-stake nodes run the same computations instead?
Yes, POS nodes will replace miners validating blocks. I believe the nodes will do mostly validation/consensus and the heavy computational work will move to off-chain resources.

Never short any coins. You may get short squeezed pretty easily, there is a lot of market manipulation.
