Its always good to back up your wallet as good as possible and sync first before sending coins, but you should be fine if you sending without being connected to the network.

Please remember on your 1st sync in can take a LONG time depending on your system resources and the network. Give it some time to sync. You should see the message at the bottom right of the wallet that it is synching. Please mouse over and make sure.
