. been trying to find a scrypt pool but I only seem to find SHA-265 pools.

I will try to install scrypt MPOS pool tonight, this is outstanding.

It was not because of you but because of difficulty retargeting. Network hash rate was too high in one moment and than so low that it took some time to find new block.
Check now please your wallet should be synced.

Or maybe you did not set conf file right if you still do not see any connections.

yes I was waiting for several hours without any change... other wallets (LTC, SIGT, DNR, ...) are working fine on this machine. When executing the exe first time, I agreed to adapt the firewall rules.

Close/stop the wallet. Create a parallelcoin.conf file in the same directory where your wallet file is located and add this to the new created conf file:

Did you wait some time? The wallet will try all the addresses one after another, and this takes some time (timeouts)....
Do you have a working wallets of another coin? Or is the DUO wallet the only one? Maybe you are blocked by a firewall in your network, so the wallet cannot connect to the ports of the nodes.

If there are not many mining or if the difficulty is very high, then it can happen that it takes some time to fine a new block -> slow network....
