Unfortunately the implication is "anyone with 100,000 BTC addresses gets 460,000 CLAM", which seems a little less fair.

I don't think anyone would get me or creative to suggest the distribution was perfectly fair which is why we always worded it "the fairest distribution" which I continue to agree with..  that doesn't mean it doesn't have its problems.

Its impossible to be 100% fair, there are always tradeoffs.

No matter which distribution method you use you are going to end up with situation where some users have a larger percentage of stake then others. The goal was to limit that as much as possible while including as many crypto users as possible instantly into the fold.

While it is very frustrating for me to see someone potentially have 460, 000 CLAM (using your example), in my mind its still fair.

How do we know it's the same person or one entity?

Is there some pattern in the digs that revels this?

Do you even read before posting?

18:45:19 (965827) <@creativecuriosity> For fucks sake doog, choose a longer term dig image graph, lolz. That short term graph looks like a mountain, lmfao.

As requested, here's a longer term chart. Note the growth in the number dug at the beginning of December when JD relaunched with CLAM, and the vertical cliff at the beginning of January when a large LTC wallet was dug up:...

LOL

Funniest thing I've seen on this thread yet Cheesy.

Cheap CLAMs for everybody  Grin

I have faith they will go back up. They always do. It is one less heavy hitter holding a bunch of CLAM over our heads now, or will be once this is all over.

Learning the troll avoidance button :)
so theres no exploit to steal clams of others, just theres some big wallets with 100s of adresses right?

Yeah, no exploit. Just a user with a lot of addressing digging up.

Well its another buying opportunity for anyone that wants to reenter clam at its old stabilization range
Good time to double down as well Smiley

I think I read on /r/bitcoin that a bunch of coins from MT Gox moved recently. Maybe whoever is in charge of those addresses is cashing in the clams.

While I'm sure some will complain, I think you made the correct decision to publish.  This is a threat that has hung over clam since its inception and any other coin that mimics its distribution method.  It will be interesting to see how clam community reacts to the first "dig whale".

We've had big digs before, and the market swallowed them up pretty well. But this one looks like it's going to be considerably bigger. Time will tell I guess.

The problem with this is that the bag holder won't be an idiot, he'll wait for the price to go back up. This discovery is going to significantly hinder clam investment in the future and is ultimately an issue with the distribution strategy.

"Everyone with a BTC address gets 4.6 CLAM" sounds like a good, fair distribution.

Unfortunately the implication is "anyone with 100,000 BTC addresses gets 460,000 CLAM", which seems a little less fair.

It's going to be hard to know whether he has dumped at all now that others are presumably dumping too.

We've always known there were around 15 million CLAMs lying around waiting to be dug up. I guess in a sense this 3% is nothing compared to what could theoretically happen.

this means you extracted loads of free CLAMs now ?

Me? No. It means someone is digging up a load of free CLAMs. But it's not me. I'm left holding a buttload of CLAMs that are worth half of what they were worth a week ago.

I noticed this a few hours ago, couldn't decide whether I should publish it or not, and eventually decided I should. I hope I made the correct decision:

Really I don't think I had a choice. I could have kept the information to myself and sold my own CLAMs into the market, to people who didn't know what was about to happen, but that seems unfair. And the information would have become public soon enough anyway - the CLAM client logs the messages about which block CLAMs are being dug from in plain text, so someone else would have noticed it soon enough.

As of right now, the last 50 digs:

The recently dug coins would make sense with the large number of bitcoin days destroyed selling taking place in Bitcoin.

So a old time Bitcoiner selling BTC from old wallets then digging up the clams for the bonuses.

Good point. The standard advice is "move your BTC before importing your wallet", and so we would expect large "digs" to be accompanied by large "Bitcoin days destroyed", at least some of the time. Although note that every non dust (>0.0001 BTC) address gets the same ~4.6 CLAM award, so it's possible these dug addresses are mostly dust amounts, and would have very little affect on the "days destroyed" chart.

Checking my clam logs, I see something strange about the recent 'digging':

Notice how the digs are all from initial distribution blocks 9121 and 9122... Looking back further, I see that the digging took ~3.6% of the rewards from block 9128 (256 of 7120), then took 3.6% of the rewards from block 9127 (261 of 7120), then took 3.3% of the rewards from block 9122 (164 of 4984). Blocks 9123 through 9126 only had 356, 0, 712, and 356 rewards each, so I didn't bother checking the percentage claimed from those.

So it looks like this guy, whoever he is, is able to claim around 3.5% of the rewards in each block, and is working his way backwards through the blocks.  According to xploited, the initial distribution ordered the rewards randomly, so there's no reason to think that he won't be able to claim a similar percentage of the rewards from all the blocks.

[Edit: it was mentioned to me that this could be interpretted as me saying that someone has found an exploit that lets them dig up so many CLAMs. That's not what I meant at all. I think it's just someone with a huge BTC wallet, possibly from an exchange, laundry, black market, etc. site. I don't suspect foul play of any sort - the transactions are being signed with valid BTC private keys.]

3.5% of the initial distribution means around 517k CLAMs. In which case this digging spree is only just getting started.

So what do we do?

It's possible I've overlooked something, and this massive influx of freshly dug CLAM isn't really coming our way. If so, please help me see it...

Also, here's a new recent-dig chart:

18:45:19 (965827) <@creativecuriosity> For fucks sake doog, choose a longer term dig image graph, lolz. That short term graph looks like a mountain, lmfao.

As requested, here's a longer term chart. Note the growth in the number dug at the beginning of December when JD relaunched with CLAM, and the vertical cliff at the beginning of January when a large LTC wallet was dug up:

Activity: 2940
Merit: 1333
Yep, I had a " in my passphrase. I have now changed that and started the import again. However, I now get:

Quote
Error: Please enter the wallet passphrase with walletpassphrase first. (code -13)

That's talking about your CLAM wallet. In order to import private keys into your CLAM wallet from the BTC wallet, the CLAM wallet needs to be unlocked. It's the same as when you try to import a private key into any encrypted wallet - you need to unlock the wallet first:

Quote
$ bitcoin-cli importprivkey 5JyEXcta7Z3QUo9R4hDkEocK3mTChquRwKbsdXPoDJ27fN1sD6U
error: {"code":-13,"message":"Error: Please enter the wallet passphrase with walletpassphrase first."}
$

So in the QT interface, click 'Console' at the bottom of the left-hand pane, then type:

Quote
walletpassphrase fred 3600

where 'fred' is the CLAM wallet's passphrase, and 3600 is the number of seconds to unlock it for.

Then you'll be able to import your BTC wallet.

Edit: I experimented with the 'Console' window to see how to type passphrases with single and double quotes in them. It turns out you can quote single quotes using double quotes, and can quote double quotes using single quotes. You can also backslash-escape both types of quotes, but backslash escaping doesn't work inside single quotes. Probably the easiest way of doing it is to put a backslash before any single quote, double quote, and space in the passphrase:

My passphrase was:

Quote
a " b ' c

ie. 9 characters: a, space, double-quote, space, b, space, single-quote, space, c

I was able to unlock the wallet by typing any of these 3 commands:

Quote
walletpassphrase a\ \"\ b\ \'\ c 3600   (backslash-escaping each space and quote separately)
walletpassphrase 'a " b'" ' c" 3600     (single-quoting the double quote, and double-quoting the single quote)
walletpassphrase "a \" b ' c" 3600      (double-quoting the whole thing, and backslash-escaping the double-quote)

Yes, I'm aware that it is retarded that you need to go to these lengths. But I just noticed there's a menu entry: Misc->UnlockWallet, which lets you simply type the passphrase to unlock your wallet. It seems the default is to unlock for staking only, so you probably need to uncheck that option. And I don't see a way of specifying how long to unlock for, so you'll want to Misc->LockWallet when you're done importing.
