Might just be issues preparing for the upcoming fork. There is currently 30GH online, only about 2 GH is p2pool, so there are working pools out there...

Recent small price decline is just serious investors shaking the lightweights out.

I was asking for the possibility in the future that not every user will need the blockchain on his machine. I was asking if it can be implemented in protocol that only masternodes will keep the blockchain.

it is possible that not every user stores the whole blockchain. All they need is a "snapshot" (e.g. "one week ago") they trust.
So it is up to you if you trust the snapshot-maker enough or if you want to store it yourself.

The pools on the other hand should use the whole blockchain to make "legitimate" transactions, and the masternodes as well.

Either CPU botnets or large data centers. I saw them once hitting 8.6 GHs of the network.

You'd need 500 R9 280x to mine @ 1 GH/s, or ~25000 average botnet CPUs.
FPGAs (or even ASICs) are already here.

I don't think anyone has that much, at least I never heared about something like this.

I know of a GPU farm that pulls ~1GHs scrypt (~3 GHs x11 but he doesn't mine X11).

Btw, the above numbers of 500 x 280, can actually be heavily reduced with 290x (only 350 x 290x)

I'm throwing in 50 DRK bounty for anyone able to patch this p2pool code to work with darkcoin masternode payments (rc2) after may 14th hardfork.
