It's Official. We are sponsoring WonderWomenHacks with EDU!

As many of you know, in order to kickstart EDU adoption, we recently sponsored the awesome student hackers at the University of Virginia's first ever hackathon. At the same time, we sponsored teams at the enormous hackathon at Rutgers University!

Today, WonderWomenHacks has kindly accepted our sponsorship offer. We are going to Long Beach, California on May 19th!

Our Goal
10 People x 10-million = 100 million EDU Can we reach this modest target? Of course you can give less or more. This will go a long way to showing others about our community's generosity --as a descendant of Dogecoin we really can't have it any other way.

Even at this early stage where EDU is largely unknown and undervalued, I know we can still accomplish incredible things for the students at this event! Let's reach our goal by next Monday (5/5) and see how much we can go past 100 million EDU!

How to contribute
I am posting WonderWomenHack's public receive address here: 6JgRzMoBwpm4sGEA6jjfFQke1rDpsBGsj5

Here it is in the block explorer, where you can see an initial contribution of 10-million EDU:
http://educhain.mycryptoco.in/a/6JgRzMoBwp

Background
Wonder Women Hacks is a two day hackathon for visionary women, teens and men who are passionate about the ever changing needs of women across the planet. It will be held with the California Women's Conference at the Long Beach Convention Center (Long Beach, California) on May 19th and 20th.

(Main link: http://www.wonderwomenhacks.com/)

The EDU will be used as giveaways, as hacker team resources, or as prize money to winning teams. Either way, they are most likely going to students and people who can clearly see value in them. This is part of our winning adoption strategy and I hope you can join us!

The extra attack on my 'newness' here is not really necessary, unless that is the vibe you want to create for those who are considering joining the community. Sorry mate. Keep doing the good work though.

Much apologize, 500crypto. You're right that was unnecessary. We welcome your opinion and suggestions, just please bear in mind we as devs (more than one writer on this account) are always wary of keeping development on point. In other coin communities we have benchmarked, discussions about changing algos have precipitated into shots fired (Not really but you know what I mean. Words being exchanged, that sort of thing).

Hope you come back and add to the development, that's the most ideal outcome here.

So, 500Crypto, your first post in the EDU forum and you're recommending changing everything? This does not support this community's active interests nor does it help educators who have already committed to EDU as deployed. Go to a Linux forum and start talking about changing the entire kernel and see where that gets you. See where that gets Linux if people listen.

1. Fork discussions, like logo changes, usually end up as an upheaval of activity followed by devs staying the course (go to every coin's 26th page you will see this). Let's not waste our own time, you have things to do, we have things to do.

2. People joining this forum for the first time, while you are welcome, let's cut out the "I want to change the curtains" fancy decorator circlejerk. You are welcome to join the devchat here: https://gitte[Suspicious link removed]/edumoto/educoin where you can make a compelling case.

3. The absolute best way to use this forum is to post issues and solutions, share strategies for development, and also plans for making EDU the best that it can be. Bitcointalk is at its best when people do that instead of lurking to see if there are any catfights to watch over popcorn or letting newbies run amok spouting "fork, fork, fork" like kids with light sabers.

I was not proposing a change, rather posing food for thought and even suggesting an idea. Yes I am new to educoin, but does that mean I should hold back my thoughts? I am sorry, I didnt come to cause upheaval in this community, I actually like how young and focused it is. I believe there is a lot of potential for this coin given the massive niche of education and I support how you are focused on the right things.  I just put out my two cents - may be this has been discussed before, pardon me for not checking back. Your response answers my question, i.e. it doesn't make sense to consider algo change - fair enough. The extra attack on my 'newness' here is not really necessary, unless that is the vibe you want to create for those who are considering joining the community. Sorry mate. Keep doing the good work though.

Well Put!

And on that note... there are tons of new and old Altcoin news outlets to utilize as EDUcoin has updates. Which I am looking forward to.

Since the net hashrate is a bit low, it would be easy to fork educoin with one 300MHs miner. The idea of mining algo needs serious thought... I like the cpu-only mining idea that has been floated around... college kids can then be part of the mining network... give scholarships to college with the highest hashrate?

Something to keep an eye on... there is a similar idea coin coming out...

Pow+POS
University Coin will be launching on the 29th of this month.

EDU needs to build up it foundation ... Increase visibility before they get a solid hold on the marketing of an educational coin.
Marketing is everything at this point.

This a really good idea for a coin but wish it was POS and I still can't cash out my coins on http://edu.multi-pool.eu/

Please keep the community posted. If they are not reliable or outright scamming, please switch to forkpool. We have mined on forkpool without major issues.

Hoqu.io – Tokensale is live
in a year i can see millions of college kids mining 24/7 in the back round on there desktops ...
i love the idea of kids on campus using this coin to all the local shops and/or school shops ...
I see a lot of pizza and pencils being bought with edu coins!
absolutely great idea for kids ... i really hope it works out for you kids like this!!!
+1

but im afraid GPU was the WORST choice.
this 100% should of been a cpu coin ...
90% of kids in school have laptops ...
a VERY small percentage i think have towers and GPU'S ...
in order for every kid in school to mine this coin and use it on a day to day it should of been minable from a laptop!

Mycryptocoin has been doing excellent work managing the EduCoin block explorer. Have you seen the updated interface?

He is also running Mycryptocoin Alpha, a site where you can view EDU difficulty charts. Visit:  http://mycryptoco.in/

Let's get donations to him as our expression of our thanks!

Dont forget about the above! This is some nice work  Smiley
Additional support to the above is always welcome.

This coin should have been a POS coin. Giving stakes to people who are in school (could verify with edu email or student id). Then again, they probably would just dump their coins after they got them.

We looked at POS, and it is trendy (maybe edgy is the word). Every benchmark POS coin we tested, the clients proved buggy. Also the concept of stake and interest were hard for new users to understand. Do you remember when you were in elementary school and teachers explained compound interest?  It's like that.  We chose a reliable POW because, to quote Steve Jobs, it just works.

This doesn't mean EduCoin's innovation stops there. The future growth plan includes turning development over to a consortium of universities (the proposed EDU Foundation). EDU's development will be managed by an organized, well-funded group of institutions (college/universities). We hope to model this around Stanford University's role as a startup incubator for Silicon Valley.  But!  This discussion is for another day. EDU has lower hanging fruit to tackle, like fixes and outreach (btw both equally important and both in progress).

Thanks for joining us. Stick around.
