I actually plan to run some more components on solar power. As I have some devices running 24/7, I would like to have them at least to run green. But I am still unsure about the size of my battery backups and panel sizes. What would you recomment in order to run 100W device 24/7 on solar. Considering winter with very few sun hours per day, my initial plan was to have about 400W of panels. probably adding a wind turbine for windy not so sunny days. And what battery capacity would you recommend on such a setup. The whole setup is able to run on 12V, so no lost on DC-AC conversion.

My working for that would start along the lines of 100W at 12V requires 8.5A (rounded up to the nearest half amp). For 24 Hours worth of battery you would need 204Ah worth of 12V cells (that's a few car batteries worth).

For 24/7 operation you'll need to have enough solar capacity to run your devices and charge the batteries. In winter there might be 8 hours of reasonable light and 16 hours when you need to run from battery, meaning you'll likely need 300W output from the panels.

Also in winter you probably wont get the full output from the panels, based on a little of it experience you might only get 10% of the panels output on an overcast winter day (maybe even less with really thick cloud cover).

At that power usage you might benefit from running the solar output and battery systems at a higher voltage dropping down to 12V near the point of use (100W as 12V means over 8A, that can mean a large voltage drop in the cable unless you're running very large wires, running at 48V means just over 2A so smaller cables for a similar voltage drop)

Thanks for the feedback, so with 400W of panels with additional wind turbine of 400-500W it should be fine to run 100W 24/7.
As for the cables, I should be fine. I still have some 4mm2 cables around which can take easily 60A.
Batterie capacity will be slightly higher as you suggested to avoid deep discharge in case of bad weather conditions. Will probably scale the batteries to last several days.
I will think about your suggestion to raise the voltage to 24V, but as most device are able to run on 12V, I need to see if it benefits the whole setup when I raise the voltage.

As promised, some screenshots of the Android EverGreenCoin wallet in operation on an Android device...
Sending and receiving are working. We are getting near the point of having a beta APK ready for testing on various Android devices.

Here is the EverGreenCoin Foundation's balance new home. As you can see, it is very much still a work in progress and I did go a bit overboard with the components, but I wanted to be sure to overshoot rather than under and know it would be up and running. Of course, as we get closer to a finalized parts list, a proper enclosure will be designed. Again, thanks to everyone who is contributing to the EverGreenCoin Solar Staker project!

Seeing Steven's solar testing I've started preparing a test using more of the stuff built into the CHIP (it's got a LiPo battery charging system on board). This hopefully gives a smaller/cheaper option although might not manage full 24/7/365 operation.

I've got the bits bodged together on the windowsill and saw a little bit of power going into the CHIP from solar earlier (it's been very overcast here so didn't expect much). I'm hoping the weathers better later this week so I can test it better and hopefully get some pictures.

very nice work mate ...

that is about as good as it gets - apart from the enclosure ...

Sending the first solar powered EGC Foundation faucet payouts now! If you were entered, you do not need to enter again today. You will still be included in the 'real' payout at about midnight eastern standard time. I just wanted to do it via solar, now that I have the Foundation's balance on a solar powered device. I will snap some pictures of this beta setup and post them later today. It is not the physically prettiest of setups at this stage, but the idea living and breathing is beautiful to see from my vantage point. Many thanks to all of the community that have helped and are helping to bring the EverGreenCoin Solar Staker to life.

On another note, Bow has sold his first EverGreenCoin tree on the marketplace. I see he just recently added another. Joe (grumpytiger) has also added some items. If anyone else wishes to, please just apply to be a vendor at the 'sellers dashboard' from within the marketplace and we will get you setup. There are no real restrictions on items other than, yes items must be 'legal' and items people might find offensive would not be allowed.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

EDIT: 'Applying to be a vendor' entails, checking a checkbox and clicking submit. Not a very lengthy application at all. Wink

The price is looking very good (for buyers) right now on bittrex, we have hit sub 1k for the first time since June - I've bought a few and will transfer some additional funds in.

One of the things that hardfork has let me do is test the stuff I've added in the Solar Staker interface to check the local block chain

From a wallet that was intentionally left on the old version (with no coins)

That's showing a few things.
  • At the top there are some warnings the second of which was sent out to the old network informing them they needed to upgrade. This should also have shown up in the desktop wallet as well.
  • In the block check list there are two blue checks. These are where the block didn't exist on the block explorer at the time of checking.
  • There's one orange check in the block check list. This is a block where the local hash doesn't match the explorers hash.

These block checks are an automated version of what's had to be done manually to check you're on the right block chain.

There's still a bit of work to do here, The blocks are only checked once so the state could change (especially in terms of blocks were the wallet is ahead of the explorer).

I've also done a lot of work on how to automate the initial setup of the software and how it can be updated which seems to be working for some of the components now.

There's still some work to do in the web interface and deploying that to the staking device but progress is being made.

It's hopefully getting towards a point I can do some useful solar testing here (Due to location I can't do much from home in winter and I've not had a strong desire to spend hours standing around in the cold to test stuff.

I today finally recieved the last components, the voltage regulators, to get the EverGreenCoin Foundation's balance staking and sending faucet payouts via solar power.

Faucet goers, if you see random payouts over the weekend, it most likely is me celebrating that achievment.

Frosty, a community member that spends more time watching and trading on the markets than I, informed me a lot of 'alt'coins are taking a beating.

Presumably from BTC's price, as often is the case.

Fortunately, EverGreenCoin is one of the few not in the 'red', highlighted here from Bittrex.

Well, the price of EGC has been tanking down for the last months, so not being more in red for a day or so, is not really a good news, to be fair. Let's see if the price can get first above 1500 sat on a stable basis, it seems we are struggling to get there.

Great, is it just yobit to go now? Their wallet is reported to be offline - block height there is 892449 - dont have access to my wallet so can't see if they are on the new chain or still on the old one...

I suspect that means they're still on the old wallet version and on the old chain. That's the current height on the old version and that chain is now very slow. That block was generated over an hour ago. The previous block was around 3 hours before that one.

Be careful with yobit, as they sometimes don't update wallets and sellout coins on old chains....

The Old wallets are not able to send any Coins anymore. They must upgrade to sell something and on the old chain is not possible anyway.

if so Why is there daily volume on https://yobit.net/en/trade/EGC/BTC

Thats just bots or people trading coins already there. Mostly it looks like bots adjusting to price on other exchanges.

Deposits are off, and withdrawals seems to be on the old wallet. (but that was also the case at bittrex-status until they opened the new on.. its just pointing to the old daemon)

edit:
You could also trade coins on bittrex while their wallet was disabled.. this does not affect their holding.

I'm speculatively buying a few coins on there too from my sig earnings if the price drops more - just in case the closed/isolated wallet causes a rally. I was lucky with that a couple of times this month with some other coins on yobit. Pure speculation though - I already moved 75% of my yobit stock out.

Considering they disabled in time... they didnt lose anything.
So i think they will resynch and be back .. but its slowbit ... id say within 1 to 50 days  Roll Eyes

yobit? ...

you mean 1 to 520days? ...

ahem ...
