They are not competitors. You should not look at the system like a password. But as identification.
You can use it as a password. But its main purpose is identification. So that you can identify you self, or have other people identify themselves to you.

An example. You want to buy something from a person in this forum. You dont know the person. Then you could have the person identify them selves to you before you do the trade. By doing this, you will make sure that you can trust the person in the other end.
