Mostly it happened because it was real high dif and the hash dropped (big pool dropped off) leaving smaller miners to deal with it. They struggled with it and it stalled out till they finished it. Hopefully this will happen less often with block payout dropping reducing profit for such high hash power pools.
I meant what happened to the block explorer?
I found that "issue" too. But newbies aren't allowed to mention them:P

Block explorer is still tits up....wonder what caused that?
