I don't really understand this coin. In my opinion (and I have also been thinking about how a cryptocurrency on Mars should work before I found this one), a cryptocurrency on mars SHOULD BE STARTED ON MARS. Not on earth. That makes much more sense, and also with such short block time it is going to be very hard to keep copies of the block chain both on mars and on earth. If there is mining on both planets the blockchain would easily branch into two copies, right? Moreover, mining takes a lot of electricity which will be scarce on mars, it would make more sense to have a proof of stake coin.

I like the idea of thinking about a cryptocurrency on mars, but I don't think (and also don't hope) it will be marscoin.

I am just a Marscoin enthusiast (I am very interested in Mars Colonisation etc) and I run a mining pool.

But Marscoin had donated 500,000 coins to the Mars Society, and another 500k to the Mars One initiatve.   Not sure if these organisations still have their private keys.. but at the time I wrote this message those donations would be worth up to $35000 USD.

Best way to help is to simply use the coin for something.   Keep it active.  The more its value goes up, the more those donations to Mars One and the Mars Society count for.   You could also donate to the coin addresses for mars one or Mars Society.
Cryptopia has a market place where you can list goods/services in any altcoin you like.. maybe sell some spacey stuff in Marscoin ?

I personally hope to build a shopping website working entirely in Marscoin eventually.. but that is slow progress when I have other jobs to complete.

Lennart Lopin; one of the Marscoin foundation creators  and one of the Mars one Finalists, has a twitter if you want to hit him up with some questions.  Marscoin also has a facebook although are a little slower answering.

As far as roadmaps go - not sure - it was created for use as a currency for the Mars Colonies.   The final Mars One crew were going to setup a node on Mars.   The general idea was use as a research credit system.    Eg, a university on Earth could rent an hour on a Mars rover built and remotely operated on Mars..  or colonists could use it to buy/sell items or experiments to be added to supply missions to Mars or specimen return missions etc..

It was always going to be a long haul coin as Mars exploration is on a timetable of years not days.

    State Of the network report
Here is where the world of Marscoin is - from the perspective of a Marscoin enthusiast.

    Interesting Mars news:
    • Spacex is planning a lander mission to Mars by 2020 give or take, to be followed shortly by a crewed mission. Elon Musk plans to put one of his Tesla Roadsters in orbit around Mars just to proove he can.
    • China has announced it plans a manned mission in the mid 2020's as well
    • Arab Emerates has committed to create a major colony on Mars by the end of 2099, and has started building a prototype habitat dome here on earth for testing
    • NASA has commited to at least think about going to Mars probably between 2030 and 2050 depending on the progress of the planned Moon missions, and planed lunar station

    Other Marscoin news
    • NovaExchange is now under new ownership and has added Marscoin.  The sell price there is a little less than Cryptopia so small traders may be able to get some cross / exchange trading profits.  The buy price book is looking a little empty too so posting a few low buy prices might net further profits again.
    • The main official marscoin mining pool has been back up and running for a while now at pool.marscoin.org after mpos was updated by the admin.
    • The official marscoin block explorer has been fixed as well.
    • Marsbux is still causing problems on marketcap websites by pretending to be Marscoin, but given its average price is 1 sat dust, and some of the websites listing it have started using mars2 as its symbol, or delisting it entirely hopefully this problem will fix itself as Marsbux natually dies.

Marscoin still crusing along, my pool is still up also, although MPOS has its quirks so I sometimes need to manually do a payout.  Bit of a worry we have a counterfeit crypto called marsbux using the same Symbol tho.. :/

Good to see other pools are still up.   Frustrating that our coin isn't on some exchanges yet they are happy to add a fake knock off..

Is there an ANN thread we can complain on ?

    Edit:
    aha https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.24205535

Looks like its just a generic "plug and play.. make-your-own-coin-in-a-minute"  from cryptolife whos only interesting quirks is trying to steal the MARS symbol and some claim at one point they swapped silver coins for 500k of their coin..   so they also look to be trying to rip off the silver tether based coins too..

I'd love to mine this as I'm very supportive of the cause (humans should be more than a one-planet species ... this argument was made eloquently in a Babylon 5 episode regarding the highlights of human civilization and why culture like Shakespeare and myriad other things worldwide, contemporary and past shouldn't be consigned to oblivion by one solid asteroid-hit).

However, the Scrypt algorithm doesn't seem conducive to the long-term health of my laptop (or other equipment readily available to the average person not presently invested in an ASIC).  I just tried solo-mining Marscoin using ccminer (with a low intensity and low max-temp) and found the temperature nevertheless got too high relative to what have I found mining NIST5 and cryptonight coins.  So.. alas... I think a hard-fork that incorporates a new algorithm would be necessary before I'd look at this coin again -- even though I really *really* really think this is an important cause and would heavily support you folks in the long-run otherwise  (See, for instance, Zcoin or Vertcoin which are catering to a wider audience through the use of hashing algorithms that are far easier to mine using hardware available to the non-specialist).

Despite my anguish about being unable to effectively mine your coin, I'd recommend that fellow space-enthusiasts consider last year's Mars show (produced by National Geographic) [ http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/mars/videos/grounded/ ] and the incredible The Expanse [ http://www.syfy.com/theexpanse ] .  Also, within the last few years some other channel in North America (Discovery? National Geo?) had a show regarding the feasibility of terraforming Mars and how it might be possible to accomplish this within a century by purposely producing a greenhouse effect.

Moreover, any futurists, philosophers, etc should check out the Seasteading Institute [ seasteading.org ] for a society working on small-scale independent groups which hopefully will provide a framework of more economic and political options than the limited choices most are stuck with in the current available situations; this, I'd assert, is a stepping-stone towards a better future for humanity in the long-term.  The L5 Society (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L5_Society) and topics such as the Bernal sphere [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernal_sphere] also merit wider recognition than they have currently.
