Good news SolarCoin community!

All 3 (Mac, Windows, Linux) clients for the 310,000 hardfork are now completed, tested and handed over to the SolarCoin team.  Expect updates and downloads coming soon!

Single digit difficulty again  Grin

That didn't last long!

It never does! I wasted some BTC the other day trying to mine, it was pointless... I'll try again closer to 310,000 so the KGW can protect us from these spike shenanigans. Smiley

Block 310,000 hurry up!  Cry

Wasnt it supose to pos this week?

Block times are running much slower than 1 per minute. It seems that the high difficulties recently are slowing down the block times. The fork is scheduled for block 310,000, whenever that is reached.

Reminder: This fork is only for a block reward reduction and implementation of KGW. The PoS fork will happen a few weeks after that. It's a two-phase process.

Step back one logic unit.  It is the low hash rates during high difficulties that are slowing down the block / confirmation times.  The reason is - that some miners are hopping into SLR when the Diff is low, mining out the 15 blocks and moving on. Leaving the low base line hash to mop up 15 blocks at relatively high diffs.  They then return when the yo - yos..... Rinse and repeat.

The 15 block change has mitigated this to a large degree, but it is still possible and quite profitable to use this MO.  I wrote a simple program to do this using WestHash a few days back and allowed the software to change between 0.05GH/s and 1GH/s to use the method above.  Very easy to do and profitable compared with using a steady hash rate.

However this behavior is very disruptive on the block chain, so I stopped after running for an hour to prove the numbers.  It happens on most coins, even BTC, but the Net hash rate is so large that individual behaviour like this is absorbed and hard to spot.  At first blush this activity seems selfish and rather pointless.  However miners are always trying to improve their ROI and anything goes if it works.

What we are seeing now is just this activity  from a number of miners and there is really no practical way of stopping it using the diff algorithm we have.  After the fork, this should all go away as unless there is another way to game the system, there will be no point.

6 more days...

Linux & Windows wallets are compiled and handed over to the SolarCoin team, hardforks are still scheduled for block height 310,000.  I am currently working on a Mac build which should be out any time soon... Here are some screen shots below of the build and it's progress, we're working on a production ready distribution with all dependencies included,  shouldn't be too much longer.

I will be sending a donation as soon as I get my main hard drive running again. Ran into some annoying fragmentation issues. As soon as I'm back 100% I'll toss you a few coins. Smiley

is this like a solar power coin?

SolarCoin is the only cryptocurrency that's designed to provide the money supply primarily to solar electricity generators. If you generate solar power, you are eligible to claim SLR as a reward. SolarCoin is currently mineable but the mining phase will end when we switch to Proof-of-Stake in a month or two. And in only a week or two, at block 310,000, a countdown to PoS will begin with the mining reward falling every day. Soon, the only way to get SLR will be to generate solar energy or buy SLR and stake your wallet. So, mine 'em while you can, and buy 'em while they're cheap.  Grin

So at this point are there two programmers involved? One working on the first fork, and the other working on the PoS fork?

No, we hired the Cannacoin dev team to do both.
