Symbiont and Adam Krellenstein and Mark Smith briefly mentioned here - http://www.coindesk.com/american-banker-conference-lines-drawn-in-blockchain-debate/

Chris DeRose was also speaking at that conference. Would be good to see videos of all of the talks (they are not available yet).

It's also worth noting that that is not a quote and was written by someone that does not even know the correct capitalization of Counterparty. I'd like to see the source for it because I've not seen it anywhere else and the quotes in that article are just recycled from previous interviews/press releases. It's not like this guy had an exclusive or something. There is no new information that has actually come from Counterparty/Symbiont in this article. That said, they may be right, but Counterparty/XCP is definitely being used and in a major way. Nothing else makes sense AND we have confirmation from the actual source.

Edit: The writer of the story has no LinkedIn as far as I can tell and his bio on Brave New Coin simply says that he "has a keen interest in digital currencies." This makes it difficult to get an idea of his legitimacy.
Thanks you for that reasonable comment.

Edit 2: He also capitalized Overstock incorrectly and left the "f(x)" off of "MathMoney f(x)".

For the time being Symbiont is using bitcoin blockchain technologies because they are the most tested and reviewed out of the technologies in this very new field, a very important thing considering that real money and assets will be traded on these systems. But the startup also recognises that the Bitcoin system has drawbacks, most pointedly that financial institutions are uncomfortable using it, Symbiont is therefore developing several non-digital currency ledgers. According to the company, non-digital currency and bitcoin ledgers will both have a place in the emerging industry with each offering different advantages.

This could be interpreted in a number of ways but I definitely see the positive side - committing transactions (and data) to the Bitcoin Blockchain could be viewed as the last mile of a financial process. Symbiont will facilitate that, but they will also work on the systems that will be internal to the financial services industry. These systems can then be made to interface seamlessly with the Bitcoin Blockchain components. Very Factom-esque, but with a laser focus on financial services.

TL:DR Symbiont will provide a full-stack of financial services tools.

We're back with our regular community updates! http://counterparty.io/news/counterparty-community-update-july-24/

"In other development news, Bitcoin Core v0.11.0 was released, followed by btcdrak’s v0.11.0 addrindex patch (https://github.com/btcdrak/bitcoin/releases) (used by Counterparty)."

It looks like only the source code was released this time. No installers are there yet, unlike when he does a usual release.

It's been said in various places that there has been ambiguity on this point and that Symbiont may not use Counterparty/XCP. I do agree that this post should not have been needed and that it should have already been obvious that Symbiont will use Counterparty/XCP.

Over the last year and a half, Counterparty has evolved into the most advanced platform for creating financial instruments on top of Bitcoin, used by an increasing number of innovative projects. During the last couple of months, our goal was to wrap up the large scale improvements to the Counterparty software suite, complete comprehensive security audits, and once the protocol reaches a mature state start focusing on and building tools and services around it. Symbiont is a step in that direction, developing products that will be utilizing this technology, and we’re very excited to see it be put into use in systems that power modern finance.

I don't understand the emphasis. The Counterparty Protocol is a purpose-built financial services layer on top of Bitcoin. XCP tokens are the necessary analogue of BTC (wrt. transaction fees) to prevent abuse of the upcoming smart contract system. Symbiont was founded in part by the founders of the Counterparty Project. Of course the emphasised sentence holds true.

You'd be surprised. If I got a $1 for each time I heard that, I'd retire. I'm really, really glad that was posted. If you want to get into a fight on Reddit,  post how obvious it is. I'm doubtful that even this update will clear people up.

A liquid XCP/BTC market (particularly on the DEx, via semi-centralised means or othewise) will actually make it look like the smart contract fuel is being paid directly with BTC with the XCP supply regulating the perceived BTC fuel fee. A very clever self regulating system.

Very cool.  Do any of those allow me to send XCP without running a full bitcoin node?

Some like XCP Wallet (extension) for Chrome work entirely out of the browser.

Has anyone used any of these to send XCP without running bitcoind or counterpartyd?

Consider that the Overstock news prompted a huge rush, while the current Symbiont developments are far more impressive and as far as I can tell, had barely any effect. I believe eventually it will be possible to pinpoint the exact time everything 'clicks' and perspectives change.

Yeah, pretty ridiculous. An online retailer gets in and there is a 4x jump. Some of the biggest people on wall street get in, nobody cares. There will be a massive jump at some point, but it could be a while. Maybe at the next funding round for Symbiont, maybe smart contracts, maybe when Symbiont opens its doors for business. What a crazy world we live in.
It will rise as soon as it becomes clear that these outstanding business development achievements result in a product that requires xcp in order to be usable. That has never been made cristal clear but I don't blame the counterparty devs for it. There is some strategy behind it... But still it would be nice to see more clarity here...

If XCP become someday expensive, anyone can't say it was not fair for everyone. There have been two(?) change to buy with burning price and really long with small money. Also big moneys don't have choose price. They only blame and told it was altcoin, unfair launch etc.

I read yesterday this reddit post and and I even can't understand much of it, but still all their problems what I can find, I think are already solved with Counterparty

I agree. I guess the leap for me is that these big names would invest in the Counterparty founding team, whose expertise is, Counterparty, and then not use it. Additionally, with a bit of research I think it becomes apparent that XCP is needed to make the whole process work.
