Strato

Take apart an old laptop which had wifi and use those antennas. Each laptop had 2.

If you want to save money but still get a quality PSU then go for a second hand Hot Swap Server PSU. Many to choose from on ebay, here is a good example.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/P081-HP-DL380-ML380-G5-POWER-SUPPLY-DPS-800GB-A-379123-001-403781-001-1000W-PSU-/351399031780?hash=item51d103b3e4

This is an HP DPS-800GB which will do 1000W with 82 Amps on 12V all Day long. Look on the RC forums for detail on how to connect up and enable it.

As the S1 has some screw connectors you will just need some wires to connect up, no connectors needed. Excellent value at £15 delivered and much better than most PC power supplies at several times the price.  Smiley

Would it not even work to get started with until I can afford to purchase something a bit better?

I would not touch that for mining at all.  Look at what happens on failures of PSU's.  I bet the wires are very very cheap.   I would be surprised if they don't heat up and possibly melt.

Don't order it.  Trust us.

Ive already bought the damned thing a few day ago..its getting returned the minute it gets delivered....

With being bought ebay that is kinda a crappy thing to do to the seller.  He provided you exactly what you ordered.   If you return he has to eat shipping most likely.

I suggest eating the £12.95 and just not use the thing.

Hi Guys I know this is for S3 discussion but I really need some help with an S1.

I have bought this PSU from ebay brand new ...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201257564181?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Can anyone advise if I can use it or not? And if so am I able to just cut off the connectors and connect to the screw fittings on the S1.

Please dont flame me I just really need some advise.

Stay away from cheap PSU's.   It just is not a good way to get started.  Look for a decent one at least.

That is pretty much a great example of a cheap psu that I personally would never use for mining.

Oh really the guy I bought the S1 from said any 400w PSU would be ok with so I just went for a 500w to be safe. Feel a bit silly now... I thought with an S1 it would be ok seeing as it an older device...

I can tell it work with my TPLink without antenna at a few meters with no interference between.
But sometimes a miner will drop as if its having a problem connecting to wifi. So basically i have the bulk of my S1's right next to the router. (Because why not) and the others are using antennas and i can place them anywhere in my apartment.

But he asked range without antenna  Wink.

And about the range with antenna. It varies.I had 4 or 8 S1 located about 1 meter from router. They worked well sometimes 2 months, sometimes 2 days.I think the issue is something called "radio weather". I really know nothing about it,HAM-amateurs here should be able to explain it.All I know,is that it has nothing to do with weather as we know it. It has something to do with stratosphere, ionosphere or something.Ask wiser men more.

I actually am a licensed ham myself.  Was one of those things I just wanted to try out, kinda a fun hobby.

You could get real complicated, but with S3 with no antenna it is not going far.  Most likely you are in same room close to router to get a signal.

Without adding an antennae whats the wifi range on an S3+. Just curious. Thanks!

Strato

7m and the second floor, with stone walls did not have any problem. Tested with 4x S3 with wifi.

Without antenna? I find it hard to believe.

Of course, with the antenna. Same antenna, that you received from me with  S3 controller.

Almost none.  If you sit it next to router you chances are will get it.  But going any distance really and I always lost connection.

I stuck with wired for most part though.

An SMD resistor of the same size as fitted to the board (0603) is probably the best / easiest. However you can also use an 1/8W wire ended resistor with the leads bent and cut to fit the spacing. Can be easier as you have something to hold.

Still not a very good picture as you have to take at an angle unless you take the board out from the frame. I have corrected the perspective but focus not that good.

The resistors to parallel across are marked with red lines.

Rich

Those look like tiny SMD resistors, did you have any issues soldering those resistors?
Yes they are quite small, you need a fine point soldering iron and a steady hand.  Smiley

Rich

What type of resistors should I use? SMD resistors or those old large ceramic ones?

Hello everyone!

Have a problem with S3! 8 miners knocked out of mining. All eight are connected to the Internet (yellow LED lights, blinking green); at 6 6 have two diodes constant light (red and green) at the same time, one S3 has a blinking connection diodes ONLY, and one is blinking green LED (+ connection).

Miners were overloaded (in the menu/OS adjust) then reinstalled on defult and then again regained their settings - nothing helped. Does not give any sign, only blinking ethernet connection.

Here are screens - work schedule (I dont understand what they show, maybe someone can!) and the status of the miners.

Can anyone tell what is the problem ?!

First thing would be to check if the PCI-e connectors all burned. Since they all stopped at the same time it *could* be possible you burned them all if you do not have proper surge protection.

Secondly did you power cycle them, along with the router? I have an issue where when one S1 bug out, sometimes all the S1s, from different PSU, connectors etc everything all lose local connection. To fix i have to restart the router.

Did you mean PCI-e connectors inside miner?

The PCI-e sockets. In the S3 there are 2 per board and they're the thing you plug in your PCI-e female(tube) connector into.

If you remove the shroud/cover it would be pretty obvious to notice if they have blackened. But you should be able to see just by looking at them with the PCI-e cables unconnected.

Hi! There was problem with router. I rebooted it, then rebooted the miners, and everything all right!
