OK, so one of my new S3 machines is hashing at 402.75Gh/s. Frequency is 218.75. One of the strings (if that is the word) is showing oooooxo-. Rebooting through the web interface, or physically power cycling doesn't fix it. Reading through this thread the suggestions are

1) Downclock to 212
2) Update firmware
3) Dismantle and replace thermal compound

Which of these is most likely to fix the hashing? Is there anything else I should try?

You also could do nothing and just let it hash at 402GHs. The extra 30GHs isn't probably worth the downtime and effort. 30GHs is worth $0.46 per day at the current difficulty/price.

I switched my S1's off as I needed the PSU to test a motherboard, and noticed how quiet the S3's are.  Very quiet.  S1's now hashing again.

I've noticed that you can have the odd x in the ASIC status and either switch completely off and then after a minute switch back on at the PSU and when booted up occasionally the ASIC status 'x's will have gone or sometimes they disappear after running for a few hours say 12 hours.

In order of what to do:
3 - clean it.  Get rid of the crap thermal compound they spew all over the chips, screw holes and anywhere else on the PCB they can find to squirt the stuff.  Properly apply good thermal compound to the ASICs and reassemble.
1 - clock it at 212.  If after cleaning you restart your S3 and still get the "x" and "-", try taking a step down in the clocks.  I have to do this with one of my S3s.  It will not hash at anything about 212.5; however, it gets a solid 430GH/s at that clock.
2 - updating firmware will have no effect since the newest firmware only provided a fix of the random beeping problem.

Thanks.

My 4 s3's are 'out for delivery' but I havn't paid the VAT yet (20%) Hopefully they'll deliver them with no import costs  Shocked Grin
They wont. UPS will collect payment for VAT when delivery takes place.

Ah Sad

When my two S3s were delivered I had to pay £122.65 for import duty and UPS handling charge.

I had to pay DHL £153 for 3 batch 3 S3's.
Now I'm feeling ripped off. I had to pay UPS £196.45 for my three machines (batch 3)

Can anyone get a db meter and tell me how loud these things are. I currently have knc nov jups that are whisper quiet. I'm planning on unloading the kncs and replacing with more efficient miners (S3 prolly), but have to keep the noise to a minimum.

No they are not like KNC I have both and can tell. They get louder when they run in hot temperature air..like here that its summer and temps around  28-32c

Did you try to reset it with the switch at the 'front' panel?

This I didn´t do. Is there anything specific like switching it for 5 seconds?

the reset switch is tricky. It was strange when I did it but it did work. Read the instructions in the manual on how to do it. I cant remember the exact steps.
The S3 manual doesn´t mention any reset switch...
Checkout Dogie's guide at https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/guide-dogies-comprehensive-bitmain-antminer-s3-setup-hd-702653, it describes where the reset switch is under 'troubleshooting'.

Good luck

@ bitmain

Please tell me how to get rid of the following issue:

The web interface only shows this on startup:

Code:
/usr/lib/lua/luci/dispatcher.lua:582: bad argument #1 to ´pairs´ (table expected, got nil)
         [C]: in function ´pairs´
         /usr/lib/lua/luci/dispatcher.lua:582: in function `createtree`
         /usr/lib/lua/luci/dispatcher.lua:230: in function `dispatch`
         /usr/lib/lua/luci/dispatcher.lua:195: in function
Did you try to reset it with the switch at the 'front' panel?
