argh so I got my S3's today, went in to fix all the settings, set up static lan on my normal subnet, disabled wan on bootup, rebooted without testing like an idiot, and now I can't connect to them. The lan interface doesn't seem to be working. I'm pretty sure the cabling/switch is fine, as other stuff is running through them. Anyone know what I can do?

RESET button ...back to factory defaults... Grin

Do NOT disable WAN...Ethernet interface is called "WAN"... in Chinese...Capisco... Huh

ZiG

WAN doesn't mean ethernet in Chinese. It is an abbreviation for Wide Area Network.

Of course it is Wide_Area_Network ...I am just kidding... Grin

But only Chinese / BitMain people could explain how Ethernet port become "WAN" ... Huh

Cheers,

ZiG

Its a hangover from the version of OpenWRT they're using on the mainboards. By default it sets up two groupings of interfaces, LAN for internal clients and switchports on a router, and WAN for the outward facing interface. Given this isn't a router, it has no LAN grouping and only works with the WAN port. Oddly enough, it almost appears the board could support another port...

+1 ...You are completely correct...but MOST users don't know these "small" details...

This is maybe why the guy in the original question was disabling the "WAN" port...thinking maybe he is connecting S3 to his "Local_Area_Network" / LAN ...using his router/gateway to go out to the WAN... which is the right terminology ...but not with S1 & S3... Grin

As I answered him already - "DO NOT DISABLE WAN", guys...

I'll try..

In internet access terms the wan typically is the port that connects to the internet.  agreed its confusing though.. but thats how I reconcile their decision.. If it was me I probably would have just renamed the port to a friendlier name based on the context of its usage.. but thats just me.. heck I would have also cleaned up the layout in the nasty asic-freq file too.. as far as I know there isn't any reason to have the latter 1/2 still look like it does.. am I missing something.. is there a reason it still looks like that?

Got my two S3s today, and I must say I'm very impressed. Well built, quiet, and easy to set up. I was even happier to see these things actually support wireless right out of the box, although no antenna connector has been added to attach an antenna to this.

So, any particular reason why a suitable hole for an RP-SMA connector wasn't drilled and a RP-SMA pigtail attached to the AR9331 board? I added my own RP-SMA pigtail and got Wi-Fi working right out of the box with less than five minutes extra configuration...

Are there plans to add these bits and pieces in a future revision? The pigtails only cost a few cents extra after all!

Can you put an image of your control board showing the wifi connection area?
Are you able to test whether it can get the signal from an adjacent source without antenna?
I need my S3 reaching in a couple of days to be run on wifi for 5 days and need to test whether I need to by an antenna for 5 days use.

Photo is now edited into my previous post. Higher quality is available if needed, but the board itself is just an AR9331 Atheros SoC on a breakout board. It has the writing ThinkPHY2 on it.

That is extremely peculiar. Why would they not do that? I'm sure there are enough people that decided against buying for this reason out there to justify drilling holes on these boxes and connecting a pigtail.

Wish I knew! I'm planning to drill my cases when I can figure out where my powerdrill went...
In the meantime, here is a picture of the inside of the case of the S3. The mainboard is based on the AR9331 and runs a variant of OpenWRT. Very neat and tidy interface, and also why it was so easy to set wifi up!

There was a way to short the pins on S1 that allowed you to reset it to factory settings. Check out the logic board and see if it has the same pins.

There's a reset button on the front but it doesn't seem to do anything.
try to hold the button, then power it up
if still no good news, then ask bitmain
they'll happily to answer you

The reset button only seems to work when it's running...got them back up now, yay!
