EDIT:  Ok the following will not work, so nobody do this... You had to have copied the blockchain directory BEFORE the fork. I didn't, so I guess that's out..  Will have to do it the OP's way...

OLD:
Someone suggested that the safest way to split the coins is through Bitcoin Core and BitcoinABC. Since I already have it going for me, they gave me these instructions, but I'm too scared to do it... Please verify for me the following: (Caution - if you're a dweller, don't follow these instructions until it is confirmed to be a working method).

-Bitcoin Core is installed and the blockchain is completely synced.
-Copy the Bitcoin folder with the blockchain to another drive and rename it BitcoinCash
-Unzip BitcoinABC, make a shortcut to the exe and use a data directory tag like -datadir=G:\BitcoinCash
-The wallet with your original bitcoins should be copied and present in both BitcoinCore and BitcoinABC's blockchain folders.
- Send all bitcoins from your BitcoinCore wallet to a different address, wait for 30 confirms.
- Open BitcoinABC, coins should still be present in the old wallet according to the BCash network, so send them to an exchange that accepts them.  (I plan to send them back to another BCash wallet after its confirmed split and just hold'em)
Once it's verified there are two separate entities of coin, the split was successful.

So what do you think? Safe? I'd do the OP's method, but I have all this ready and set to go... if I can do this now, I will, I just need some input Smiley

honestly just trying to dump bcc while its still worth .... now <$300

installed bitcoin-abc on a clean VM which at least shows BCC as the currency in the wallet ...

originally tried both the btc-unlimited-cash 1.1.0.0 but it still shows BTC as the currency so I didn't get the warm/fuzzy I'd hoped for...

both flavors install by default to the same program files / bitcoin directory and both use same executable "bitcoin-qt.exe"  in windows anyways.

reindexing now but it seems to be stuck ...

by the time my wallet catches up the price will likely be <$200  :-(

I read somewhere that Coinomi wallet supports BCC, besides BTC and other cryptos. In any case, even if you wanted to already, where would you sell your BCC now? I believe there's nowhere to do so at the moment yet even if some exchanges do show the BCC chart Huh

Another way to handle the HF:

https://github.com/mmgen/mmgen/commit/576d8036c798249e237c422dad5a1e94a4082a21

Funds do not need to be split before the fork. Transaction replay between chains is impossible, as BCH uses a completely different sighash algorithm. Signatures from one chain's transactions cannot be used to sign another's. The Bitcoin ABC daemon and Core daemon can be run side-by-side on the same machine. I'm doing it now. The main thing is to maintain two fully independent blockchains and keep your data directories separate. Needless to say, keep your keys offline.

I think this is what I was getting at in my previous post. I assume your BTC and BCH wallets use identical keys and
have the same set of addresses created before the split yet work fine side by side?

If most people use BCH, what about the bitcoin fate? Will people stop using bitcoin?
And I heard information that BCH delivery is faster than bitcoin, and it costs very little. How is the bitcoin going forward?

If you are asking because you are a holder of BTC, as far as I know, no matter what happens -even in the case that BCC wins and BTC starts to decline- you will not lose as long as you still hold your bitcoin. Because, as long as you have your bitcoin (and your wallet seeds or private keys), if you don't sell them separately, you will also have BCC. Only when you follow instructions explained in this thread and several others to sell your BCC will you be at risk of losing everything in the case that BTC should die, which it won't. So, in summary, I'd suggest patience, waiting it out for a few days or more before doing anything, as most HODLERS are doing right now.

It could've scrolled right or left, I wasn't really bothered about that, but it was missing.

My short version of the tutorial :

.Wallet A - has BTC
.Move BTC to wallet B (make a new wallet - wallet B) - WAIT FOR +6 CONFIRMATIONS ... that's what I did anyway Smiley
.Create BCC wallet > see bitcoincash.org - the BCC electrum version made by some dudes
.import private keys from BTC wallet A to the new BCC wallet

Another way to handle the HF (intended for users of the MMGen wallet but also applicable to Bitcoin Core):

https://github.com/mmgen/mmgen/commit/576d8036c798249e237c422dad5a1e94a4082a21

The main thing is to maintain two fully independent blockchains and keep your data directories separate. Use bitcoind's watch-only address feature as MMGen does, if possible, and keep your keys offline.

Thank you so much for explaining in plain terms everything. I was following the other thread and was waiting for the all clearance from you.  The simplicity in which you explained everything in layman's term is something which makes me respect you and your effort. Thank you Theymos.

Thanks for this news. I am so happy, today should be considered like a national day. I am super excited.
If someone can tells: when the OP says that there is still a chance that this split could still happen between now and Aug 10. What do you think can be the percentage to see it happen: 10-20-30% chance ?

Executive summary

Bitcoin is working fine and you can use it as you were before, possibly with slightly more reorg risk for a while.

It's impossible to keep up with the posting activity but I hope this question doesn't get lost.

I'm curious about the instructions to move all BTC to a new wallet. Is this simply a way to ensure
BTC and BCC don't use identical keys going forward or is there a technical reason for it?

I ask because if users do nothing they are in that situation already. They have BCH that can be accessed
by their BTC keys imported into a BCH wallet. If BTC need be moved in order to claim the BCH shouldn't that be
the case also if abandoning the BCH. After all it still exists.

If there is no technical need to move BTC to a new wallet with new keys the only issue is the existance
of two currency wallets sharing the same keys. Since I own the keys to both what is the security risk?

Edit: changed BCC to BCH.

One additional point. If the BCH is claimed as described in the OP wouldn't the old BTC wallet still exist
and be useablewith the original keys?

Ok another point. The original keys are associated with the same addresses on both currencies. IF BCH keeps
the original keys it will also keep the original addresses from the BTC wallet. It might be desireable to keep
your existing BTC addresses as BTC addresses and obtain a set of new addresses for BCH. To that end would
the following process achieve that result?

1. Create a temporary BCH wallet using the existing BTC keys.

2. Create a new permanent BCH wallet with new keys.

3. Move the BCH from the temporary wallet to the permanent wallet. The temporary wallet can then be discarded.

4. Continue to use BTC with the original keys.

Thank you very much for the information. I hope that everything will soon calm down. Bitcoin began to grow rapidly in value. Now his rate is 2760 per dollar. Apparently, he will continue to improve in the course.

Could he not import the private keys on the Bitcoin Cash client? I must be missing something here.

blockchain.info removed the ability to export private keys. You need to regenerate them from scratch using the deterministic wallet stuff.

Thanks for the guide , think I might just hold on for a bit longer until a method comes up that doesn't involve having to hand over your keys, especially if some of the addresses are still in use.

Great news, thank you for the information.

I have a question, as I do have Coins in my BlockChain wallet, so can I get the BCH? I have seen different opinions on this.

Can you please clear it?
You can export the private keys. Any wallet which allows you to export your addresses' private keys make possible the process of accessing your Bitcoin Cash.

It should be possible to claim your BCH, but it may be difficult. You'll probably have to wait for someone to figure it out over the course of the next few weeks.
