back to Jupiler, and Mechelen won today, 3:2, with a goal and assist from Nikola Storm (he had one goal in first 19 matches this season), hopefully this will prove his value, and he will score more till the end of the season

Genk is winning big, 18 wins in 21 match so far, if they do not make it this season, not sure when they will, 19 points above Brugge at the moment

Scott Parker is the new coach at belgium's champions club brugge. the former england international, who led fc fulham to the premier league in 2020 and afc bournemouth in 2022, succeeds Carl Hoefkens, who was sacked a few days ago. SP had been sacked at bournemouth in august after a 0-9 defeat at liverpool and criticism of the club's transfer policy.

belgian champions fc brugge have sacked coach Carl Hoefkens. the reason for the dismissal is the disappointing results in the national competitions. after 18 matchdays, defending champions brugge are only fourth in the jupiler league and twelve points behind leaders krc genk. in the cup, the team was eliminated in the round of 16 shortly before christmas. CH was promoted to head coach in the summer after three years as assistant coach and won the cl group stage behind benfica and ahead of bayer leverkusen and atletico madrid

I saw the dismissal coming of Hoefkens but he did some great things; reaching the second stage of CL group stage is a very nice achievement. Will be interesting to see who will become the new head coach and if he can turns things around. It is not too late yet as in the playoffs, the points gets halved.

Genk lost against Kortrijk, and failed to increase their advantage over Royale and Club Brugge
with Antwerp in low zone, after great start, and Genk losing, will this season end-up as previous, when Royale had a lead almost till the end, but eventually in Championship Group Brugge stepped on gas and overcome them in final rounds, or Genk/Antwerp will be able to finish on top this season

I think Genk is in a far better position than most teams,I completely didn't saw the standings before putting a bet for Club Brugge to win in the cup game some days ago when they failed miserably against a team much lower in rankings. What I mean is that Genk without Anderlecht or Club Brugge out of their way in the title fight it is only them who can lose the title and by losing to teams like Kortrijk in continuity can really endanger their position at the top of the standings.

Things look good for Genk so far with 7 points difference from the closest follower.

not much discussion about Jupiler league, and Antwerp is making a show there, with all wins this season so far
they did not put much effort into Europa Conference league, being out from Basaksehir, but have winning strike in Jupiler and playing great football, maybe this will be a season to de-throne Brugge

Brugge is on the other hand great in CL, but losing points here and there in the league, probably waiting for Championship group near the end

second round starts tonight, with a game between last year second team in the league, Royal Union and current leader Charleroi

while home win is widely expected, Charleroi is good starter team, and they are usually close to top in first part of the season, so I would probably take double chance on them
Royal had great last season, but it is low level club, and I do not expect much from them this season

Sporting Charleroi 3 - 1 Eupen
The march was interesting. Jerome Deom got the first yellow card in 1 minute time as the march start. Anass Zaroury scored the 1st goal by 18 minutes time. Loic Bessile scored the 2nd goal by 51 minutes time, while Kanan N'Dri scored the 1st goal for Eupen at 76 minutes. Herve Koffi got his yellow card in 90+3 minuts time of the 2nd half. Ali Gholizadeh scored the 3rd goal for Sporting Charleroi at 90+4 minutes, that was immediately after Koffi got his yellow card. And the final whistle was blown by the referee. But from the stats, Eupen possessed ball more than Sporting Charleroi.

shots on and off targets

Sporting Charleroi 5 - 7 Eupen

Off
Sporting Charleroi 3 - 1 Eupen

Ball possession
Sporting Charleroi 44 - 56 Eupen

Today we have Belgium season opener - Super Cup between Brugge and Gent. So early, in middle of July, but most leagues will start earlier because of World Cup.
Brugge is favorites, odds for their win is attractive @1.95, but such games is difficult to predict because teams aren't in optimal condition yet.

Brugge won this one and season starts tonight with a match between Standard and Genk
will be interesting to see this season Brugge, they obviously let de Kaetelare leaving for AC Milan, which should be finalized these days, and could influence their attack

The odd was indeed quite attractive and Brugge won his first prize of the season. Chances they become the champion again is quite high again as they didn't loose any top players and they did some good incoming transfers.

And personally I don't like their competition system at all. Why they can't have same system like all other leagues? You can lead whole seaso, but just few bad games in CG phase can ruin your whole season work.
BTW, there is less than 2 weeks remaining until new season, clubs already have played plenty of friendly games.

agree, Union led whole season, but could not keep up in CG phase and ended up without title, because slashed points before CG phase
it is basically not fair to teams that play good in regular season, because you will end up with few point difference, even when you had solid advantage in regular season

yeah, teams are getting ready, and season starts in less than two weeks, will be interesting, hopefully Antwerp will have a shot for the title this season

it seems that we could get try-way fight for the title next season between these three, but as you mentioned Union, there is several teams that could build on a good start, and stay in the race until the end, to join Championship group (system is that Championship group could change everything, because teams are mostly leveled-up in points before final CG phase)

There isn't just Brugge and Anderlecht. Genk, Antwerp and Gent is also contenders.

yeah, Antwerp is spending a lot lately to fight with Brugge, Anderlecht had few tough seasons, but last season proved that they are back in title business, and expect more from them as well

I don't see any real contention in this league,it will be either Brugge or Anderlecht but most likely Brugge as they have the best team compared to many others and even if they don't play well enough as they are used to play in Champions League against much stronger teams like Real Madrid and other strong ones, they still can win their domestic league even when they play not at full power.

Of course I would like to see teams like Antwerp to be contenders and to win the league but every time I have bet on teams other than Brugge and Anderlecht in this league the majority of the times I have lost my bets.
I wouldn't say that there is no contention in this league. It's not like German or French leagues where they have one dominant team. Yeah, Brugge is slightly ahead others, but not that much. And we don't need to look for examples very far. Like last season when Union who got promoted from 2nd division where leading whole regular season and won it. Later they weren't able to keep 1st place in playoffs, but their example shows that even small team can fight for title in this league. There isn't just Brugge and Anderlecht. Genk, Antwerp and Gent is also contenders.

Jupiler league is nearing next season, probably first to start in July, due to World cup in Qatar and teams are gearing up for next season

Antwerp trashed Mechelen in friendly match 4:0, and they will probably be most relevant competition to Brugge in new season, with few incomers - Janssen coming from Monterrey, Valencia from Indepediente and Scott from Bayern second team

no notable in players, but few left league, such as Bayo to Bologna, from Charleroi and Theate to Empoli, from Oostende, and Gent is shopping from smaller clubs, Cuypers from Mechelen

There are 10 games left for this season in the Belgian top flight, Union Saint-Gilloise are 9 points away from Club Brugge which means Union Saint-Gilloise only need a win from their next 7 matches to become champions this season, it seems it is not impossible to win. Union Saint-Gilloise if they can beat Anderlecht and Antwerp in their next match.

Jupiler league has Championship group in the end, and they are halving points before last group, so it is far from the end for Union Saint-Gilloise
it will be interesting to see how they perform in final group, with probably Brugge, Anderlech and Antwerp, I would like to see them as champions, but it is a much longer road than what you just wrote, Brugge is not playing great, and that is main chance for Union, IMO

Union Saint-Gilloise is still leading, they didn't lose against Club Brugge and kept the distance. Nine points difference is more than three games, unbelievably perfect performance by them. I wonder if they finish this fairytale with a championship trophy, I hope so. This is the greatest underdog performance in top leagues of Europe since Leicester City championship. Deniz Undav and Dante Vanzeir carry the teams attacking side, they also defend well with less than a goal conceded a game, the best in whole league in this statistics.
