You can invest in any coin for the long term. The main thing is to determine the risk / profit ratio and create a diversified investment portfolio. I believe IOST, SCL and JNT are some of the coins among the successful ICO of all time which happened to be working today also. IOST specifically is making huge progress and as you can see they are also doing the marketing and thus having good attention from all over the community.
No other coin can match Bitcoin as a promising long-term investment. I say that because now Bitcoin has enormous power and has had a very good popularity so Bitcoin can be trusted.
By gaining trust then we will not be too worried about the price of Bitcoin, indeed the price reduction will always be there but I am sure the amount of increase will be much higher.
Perhaps only Etherum is on the same path as Bitcoin. For other coins then I am currently not quite sure. For the short term maybe it could be, but as a long term then I can not entrust my investment to other coin.
I too agree that bitcoin is the best coi for the long term until now but I think there were some of the altcoins are also better for long term if the investor who can't afford to buy bitcoins like ethereum,litecoin,monero and NEM and many more. For long term holds, it's best to pick established coins with high market caps, those are setup best to succeed in the long run. In no particular order:
BTC: Dictates the market, still one of the best long term holds
ETH: Ethereum still dominates the alt coin market
XMR: Privacy coins are my opinion are the heart of blockchain, and Monero is by far the best out
ADA: Cardano has strong community support and lots of upcoming releases in their roadmap
EOS: Many in the community see this as a viable competitor to BTC, something to watch
NEO: Incredible community support in Asia, dozens of projects and dAPPs coming out being built on the NEO blockchain, this one will do well long term
BTC: Dictates the market, still one of the best long term holds
ETH: Ethereum still dominates the alt coin market

If I were to choose, I would still prefer to have bitcoin and ethereum for a long term investment. I believe that these coins have passed the tests of time here in crypto world. However, there are still lots of altcoins out there, and it is up to you to choose the best one.

Ethereum is always my number 1 pick.There is so much to ethereum that meets the eye.Currently sitting in second position on coin marketcap may someday over take bitcoin as much of the new ICOs choose ETH as the platform for launch.We will always have ETH,not like some altcoins that may eventually be delisted.

Best coin for long term depends on your risk strategy. Safest way - BTC. If you are looking for alts -I would say stratis. It has a huge plattform you can create many stuff.
