To date, Ethereum has no big competition. Yes, there are coins that claim to replace Ethereum, but their functionality is far from eth.
Agree. Despite the setbacks Ethereum had experienced lately, no other alternative has been able to reach the level of popularity and support Ethereum has. Being a first mover in smart contract technology, it has obtained recognized branding over the years. That's the reason why many ICOs have launched their tokens within the Ethereum blockchain since its technology has been tried and tested over time. Other alternatives like NEO, EOS, and Cardano, are relatively new in the space and have not proven their use cases in the mainstream world.
They may claim to be the real Ethereum killers, but in fact, they’re simply overhyped with no proven uses that will benefit businesses, individuals, and companies alike. Don't take me wrong, but their technologies look far superior than Ethereum when it comes to scalability concerns. However, most of these cryptocurrencies have sacrificed their decentralization, for greater scalability. Therefore, even if Ethereum is being criticized by many due to its slow transaction speeds, and high costs, it's still the most decentralized smart contract platform which I believe that has given it an advantage over other cryptocurrencies in the market to date.
