Most likely, the best competitor of Ethereum is EOS or NEO, because they are similar than that. Although I personally would like them to always cooperate Smiley

Which are the best competitors to Ethereum, and why do you think so?

(I know on top of my head that Cardano and IOTA try to challenge Ethereum,
although they still haven't proved much from my understanding?)

Cardano and IOTA both the coin is good but this cannot compete with Ethereum. Because ethereum is very popular then these two coins. And Ethereum is giving opportunities to create other Altcoins or tokens. So Ethereum is always queen of the cryptomarket.

I've seen a bunch of altcoins that claim to be better than etherium, but at the moment no one is better than etherium except bitcoin

I think the best competitors of Ethereum other than Bitcoin obviously, are Ripple and Litecoin. These coins have the nearest potential to match ETH. Because they provide both effective strategies to survive the market. As of now the market didn't show any progress at all at the year 2018 starts. That goes with all Alternate Coins that occupies the Market.

Competitor rocketing to attention lately is Cardano. Cardano burst onto many people’s minds when it rode a 2000% increase over 3 weeks. Cardano has a talented team. Former Ethereum and Bitshares employees are onboard as advisors. Unlike Ethereum, which is centralized through Vitalik Buterin, Cardano aims to be self-sustaining and decentralized in the long run. Token holders will be able to vote on whether protocols should be added or not. To an extent, this already happens with miners choosing to decide what software to run. But Cardano formalizes the process and gives the miners less power.

One of the most promising contenders for Ethereum’s title is QTUM, a hybrid cryptocurrency technology that takes the best attributes of bitcoin and Ethereum before blending them together. The result is a solution that resembles bitcoin core, but also includes an Abstract Accounting Layer that gives QTUM’s blockchain smart contract functionality via a more robust x86 Virtual Machine.

Essentially this is an off-layer scaling solution akin to what bitcoin seeks in SegWit and the Lightning Network, combined with the ability to build and host smart contracts. This has made QTUM a popular destination for developers, who appreciate the protective clauses installed in the platform that make it nigh impossible to commit the kinds of coding infractions that might one day become a multi-million-dollar problem. They also appreciate the presence of second-layer storage, despite its implications on decentralization, because stable business applications are their primary desire, as well they should be.

NEO is what people like to refer to as “China’s Ethereum,” and for good reason. First, the two are very similar, and bill themselves as hosts of decentralized applications (dApps), ICOs, and smart contracts. They’re both open source, but while Ethereum is supported by a democratic foundation of developers, NEO has the full backing of China’s government. This has made it popular domestically but also abroad, and for its unique value proposition as well.

NEO uses a more energy-efficient consensus mechanism called dBFT (decentralized Byzantium Fault Tolerant) instead of proof-of-work, making it much faster at a rate of 10,000 transactions per second. Moreover, it supports more computer languages than Ethereum. People can build dApps with Java, C#, and soon Python and Go, making this option accessible to startups with big ideas while helping to add to its long-term viability.

initially I used to think waves is a competitor for ethereum, but now waves less popular with ethereum. I think NEO is a competitor to ethereum now.

Now on the crypto-currency market, two obvious favorites - bitcoin and etherium. However, new ambitious coins are on the heels of the leaders. For example, the coin Gram - the project of the well-known Telegram - has not yet come out, but has already managed to become a fairly promising currency.

I consider that EOS is the most suitable alternative cryptocurrency to compare with ETH. ETH is so strong and EOS is becoming too stron as well.

I think the current price of Ethereum is overestimated. The elation of Ethereum does not last long to increase the value of Ethereum. Ethereum has many competitors, ADA, NEO, EOS, which will become the largest in Ethereum in the future. The opponent, perhaps two years after the ETH will depreciate sharply.

I think EOS, if EOS can do what it advertises, then EOS will go beyond ETH.

I think NEO will surpass the ethereum some day....as u may think ethereum is overload now and i think nothing change about the ethereum project. They not already upgrading about the future just like they reach already their limits. Many projects have the same with ethereum network and just like bitcoins... they will replace them.

If at this time, the heaviest competitor to ethereum is EOS. Position in the market also EOS began approaching the ethereum. Even the EOS keeps getting a positive appreciation of the crypto community.

My view that most important competitor of Ethereum is NEO at the moment. Yes Cardano and EOS could be competitors, but this blockchains still not implemented as mentioned in WhitePapers of the projects.

ethereum has too many competitors at the mooment, but most of them are not surviving to the bear market conditions and that is why they are not too relevant. Take in consideration EOS, Waves, Cardano, and a few other mores but they are lowcap.

I have not seen any coin that can compete with Ethereum in crypto currencies. maybe in next years EOS, Ada, Ripple can compete with ethereum.
However I am also not sure even bitcoin ethereum even rivals as both have become one unity, ethereum also can not compete with bitcoin all there is every stage of each coin. for other altcoin may have more price but not as good as ethereum and the team of developers deeply understand for the future will be how.

Right now the best competitor for ethereum is neo because neo chain is already running for quite some time and there's several projects that run on their chain. Cardano and eos can be ethereum competitor in the future but right now it is still early because ada hasn't launch their chain while eos is still a mess.
NEO is just a past, although it's still in the top 10 altcoins with higher market cap but there's EOS that seriously give a competition to ETH because they just trying to dump ETH as much as they can so that the value of their coin will increase but good thing that it just have a temporary overall effect to ETH.
If that's EOS's strategy to overtake ETH, kind of curious what will they do in the future.
