I can both agree and disagree with OP. For instance I am not much familiar with football, but I understand that Brazil most likely would win Liechtenstein if they win. Should I resist placing a bet when the winner is obvious? I am totally unfamiliar with cricket. I know that there is a guy who throws a ball and had to his little wooden logs, while opponent must his that ball back with a bat. Should I also resist placing a bet when I see one team has 1.05 odds and other 5+ ? However I agree that betting on a sports that I know well will greatly increase chances to win.

What did you mean by sport you know nothing about, is it not knowing what options to gamble or what because I doubt if someone will go and bet on a sport he or she doesn't even know the options unless they are just gambling for fun or perhaps they want to learn from there and I think this is a very rare situation for someone to go an gamble on a site they know nothing about. However, gambling on the hand is not necessarily about knowing what to predict or what not to predict just like you said because it doesn't guarantee winning in our gamble rather it will help us to minimize loss and be on a safer side when gambling and often time, that I joined a sport I don't really know much about like the rules, navigating etc but I know the options I easily do win regardless perhaps you should break it down what you actually mean by betting on a sport you know nothing about.

In my opinion, it would be a stupid thing to bet on football and not understand anything about this sport. If you bet on a sport that you know something about, it's a kind of risk management that allows you to reduce losses.
