Bitcoin MMA Sports BettingThe first fight card back is August 1st that was originally slated to be Headlined by Holly Holm and Irene Aldana. Aldana had to pull out due to a positive Covid-19 test. As a result, the co-main event of Derek Brunson and Edmen Shahbahzyan was promoted to main event. Unlike normal main events of UFC events, the fight will be 3 rounds than the normal 5, due to the late change. I’ll be previewing 3 of the fights and making my predictions.
Brunson vs. Shahbahzyan PredictionMain Event – #8 Brunson (+233) vs #9 Shahbahzyan (-303) (Middleweight fight)
Derek Brunson (20-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) is a UFC veteran, making his first appearance in 2012. He started off his career as a strong wrestler but has since evolved to a more well-rounded game with a lot of power. At one point in his UFC career he was on a 5-fight win streak with 4 of those fights won by 1st round Knockout, showing off the power that he possesses. After 1st round knockout losses to Souza and Adesanya in 2018, Brunson has settled in the gatekeeper role very well, winning decisions vs prospects Heinisch and Theodorou. While he is on the downward part of his career at age 36, he still possesses a lot of power and has shown in his last 2 fights he is able to grind out 3 round decisions.
Edmen Shahbahzyan (11-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) when he first joined the UFC he had the goal of becoming the youngest UFC champion. At just 22 years, and 8 months, he is well on his way as if he wins this fight vs Brunson, as he will most likely join the top 5 and be just 1 fight away from a title shot. The current record for youngest champion is held by Jon Jones (23 years, 8 months). Obviously, he has had a tremendous start to his UFC career winning his first 4 with 3 of them coming in the 1st round via knockout. Overall in his 11 fights, he has won in the first round 10 times, with 9 of those being by knockout. In his one fight that went to decision, his UFC debut vs Darren Stewart, he visibly struggled with his cardio and could barely get through the 3rd round.
Prediction – Brunson will be able to survive the early 1st round blitz from Shahbahzyan and control the rest of the fight by mixing it up with his wrestling and power. Pick is Brunson by decision.
Luque vs Brown PredictionWelterweight fight #12 Vicente Luque (-175) vs Randy Brown (+142)
Vicente Luque (18-7-1 MMA, 11-3 UFC) is an action packed fighter that will always move forward. He has very good cardio and power that overwhelms his opponents. He has won 7 of his last 8 fights and is a popular dark horse in this division.
Randy Brown (12-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) is also an action packed fighter. He was a very interesting prospect when he joined the UFC in 2016. He has had inconsistent results but has seemed to turn the corner in 2019. He is on a 2 fight win streak vs solid opponents in Alves and Barbarena. He is constantly improving an will be interesting to see how he fares vs Luque
Prediction – Luque and Brown are very similar fighters but it appears that Luque is just a little bit better everywhere. The pace Luque puts on will be too much for brown resulting in a 3rd round knockout win for Luque.
Vannata vs Green PredictionLightweight fight Lando Vannata (-170) vs Bobby Green (+140) (rematch of 2017 fight that ended in a draw)
Lando Vannata (11-4-2 MMA, 3-4-2 UFC) is another action packed fighter that never disappoints. He is most known for his UFC debut, where he took on division stalwart Tony Ferguson. It was a back and forth fight with vannata nearly finishing ferguson in the 1st round before eventually losing in the 2nd. Since then, Vannata has been very inconsistent holding a very modest UFC record. He is known for moving forward with little defense. In his last fight he took a more conservative approach and looked fantastic winning a decision easily vs Mederios.
Bobby Green (25-10-1 MMA, 6-5-1 UFC) is another fighter that always seems to be in a close fight. In fact, he was getting so frustrated with close losses that he retired briefly in 2018. He has fought twice since then, again having 2 close decisions, going 1-1. Bobby green has incredible skills but is more of a point fighter which ends up in these close fights.
Prediction – Like the first matchup in 2017, I expect this to be a close fight. I expect Green will be slightly be better this time around and squeak by with decision.
