Yeah, I guess there are more options than just bitpay.

The whole point of this is to have them accepting bitcoin in general, right?

It could be as simple as them having them put up an address I guess. But I don't know them, and I doubt they will want to take coins and then convert them to baht themselves.

I think it is a worthy cause. And I know that what they are trying to do is quite difficult. Hopefully I can talk to the right person there and help them to understand what bitcoin is and how it can help them get donations.

I think over time they will receive a decent amount of bitcoin if it can be known that they are accepting it. And it should make a huge difference and help them a lot.

If I could find a way to get this organization to get bitpay on their site, do you think they could be a part of bitcoin 100?

http://www.santisookdogsandcats.org/en/

How simple is it for someone to get bitpay on there? They have paypal there already, so is setting up bitpay similar?

Probably, yeah.

I don't have experience setting up BitPay, so I don't know, but I've been told it's fairly easy to do. I don't know if they have deposit options for Thailand though. You could ask them I guess?

Does bitpay require it to be a US account? Or are international accounts accepted?

IIRC, BitPay will walk them through it and waive fees for charities.

Hi Rassah,
I received this inquiry today and just wanted to make sure you received it - John from Songs of Love would like some help accepting bitcoin and would like to be funded. Songs of Love is a charity which writes songs for terminally ill kids. More information: http://www.songsoflove.org/ And his email is - [email protected] And here he is on TV on 60 Minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cbkVlA1-zA4

John may have emailed you a few weeks ago but I don't know if Bitcoin100 was up and running then.

Thanks!
Stephanie

I have not received anything from John, and let her know.

Follow-up from a different John, including me in an e-mail to the SoF John

Hey John,

Stephanie is a part of Fr33aid a non profit that just received funding from Bitcoin 100, Rassah is one of the individuals who are in control of the Bitcoin 100 fund and would be the person to talk to about Songs of Love and bitcoins.

I also sent a follow-up e-mail to EquineAngelRescue Inc., since I haven't heard from them after e-mailing them while I was at the Bitcoin 2013 con. They are a charity being sponsored by AnthroCon, which sponsors a different animal=related charity every year and runs a fundraiser for them during the convention. Since I'll be going to the convention, I'm really hoping to get them to accept BTC, and will be talking to them in person once I'm there. BTC is a great thing for artists in general, since it's easy to use a BTC address for donations in the description section of art posts on sites like FurAffinity and DeviantArt.

Antiwar.com might qualify but I don't think The Free State Project does. They might be a worthwhile project but, according to their own site:

Yeah, I concur. It's a nice idea, but it's not a charity per-se.

The news release is out, many thanks to Teresa for writing it: http://www.fr33aid.com/1236/bitcoin100-supports-fr33-aid/
I also promoted Bitcoin100 on the most recent show of Let's Talk Bitcoin here: http://tmblr.co/ZhSBUsmanWF3
And today or tomorrow I will be releasing the interview that you and I did at the conference on podcast with some more info about Bitcoin100 - I will send you the link when it's available.

Thanks again for your huge support and help!

Hey Rassah,

I forgot to mention that I encouraged the Hundred Nights Shelter (homeless shelter open on the 100 coldest nights of the year in Keene, NH) http://www.hundrednights.org/ to get in touch with you. They wanted to use bitcoin but were having trouble getting started.

Rassah,

Thank you for your support of Fr33Aid, The blog post and Press
announcement have been pushed out by Fr33Aid.com and all of us
involved are promoting the news on our various social networks.

I noticed on the forum post that you are willing to extend your offer
to all 3 organizations that BitcoinNotBombs was promoting at the
bitcoin conference. I have been talking with Angela Keaton from
AntiWar.com about how they might add to this effort and give you the
promotional push that your looking for. AntiWar.com has a large
community of readers that we would like to help you reach. I have
included her on this email and we would like to discus how we might
best work together on this.

Thoughts on funding the second and third organizations? Do they qualify? Do you want them to do anything extra to earn the money?

I personally would be happy to support these organizations - i don't think they should have to do anything.
People like this should be unconditionally supported

Generations of Hope has used BitPay to start accepting Bitcoins: http://www.generationsofhope.org/donate/

Let me know if I can provide any more information.  I am sure they would be excited to see some actual Bitcoin donations.

Dan

How did they come to accept it?

I think all of the press about Bitcoin during the rally pushed them over the edge.  The Director heard several pieces on Bitcoin on NPR.

They used BitPay for the implementation, and put a big logo on the Donate page.  As with most nonprofits, you can get to the donate page from almost anywhere on the site.

Now, hopefully it pays off for them Wink

Bitcoin100 is an organization of over 100 bitcoin users, who have pledged to collectively donate $1000 to any charitable organization that agrees to accept Bitcoin donations. Bitcoin100 seeks to entice non-profits to accept bitcoin donations alongside their other donation methods, and encourages anyone [change "anyone" to "everyone"] to reach out to their choice of charity ["charity of choice" scans better IMO], pledging to donate regardless of whether the charity’s decision to accept bitcoins was due to Bitcoin100’s activities or due to persuasions of other third parties. On Sunday [June 2nd, 2013], Bitcoin100 treasurer Dmitry (Rassah) reported the organization has over 300 bitcoins in assets, ready to be donated.

Looks good to me. My only suggested edits are in red above but I think it's adequate even without them.

Should we continue contributing for each new charity? And how much?
I'm happy to give more as necessary (thinking $10 worth of bitcoins if $1000 dollars is the current amount per charity)

edit: sent 0.2btc to cover these 2 charities: https://blockchain.info/tx/dc49dcbfde9d6b2d60be8d6942582d1a58fd1e0c965f6b520864480e6f792689

Thank you!
Yes, you can keep contributing, and just contribute $10 at a time, but that's not really needed right now. We have about $40,000 to go through, and with bitcoin value going up faster than we can give it away, shortage of funds won't be an issue for some time I don't think.

Hi Rassah,
Thanks very much for reaching out to us and for what you're doing with Bitcoin100. You mentioned that a non-profit organization that has proof of accepting bitcoin can sign up for support with you all and receive $1000 worth of bitcoins. Is this accurate? I looked on your website, and this part was not clear.

Just in case it's enough to send you the website, here is the link to Fr33 Aid's bitcoin donation page: http://www.fr33aid.com/bitcoin/

And here is the Free State Project's donation page, including a bitcoin donation option: http://freestateproject.org/getinvolved/donate.php

And here is the Antiwar.com page accepting bitcoin:  http://antiwar.com/blog/2012/11/27/an-alternative-way-to-help-antiwar-com/

Thanks again,

These are the three charities that had a booth at the Bitcoin Conference 2013 that I've talked to.

Opinions?

I don't mind if each these charities receive $1000 worth of BTC from Bitcoin100 funds. However, since one of our goals is good press for the Bitcoin movement in general, perhaps we can encourage them to do a press release.

In regards to the restructuring/rebranding: I vote for sticking with Bitcoin100 and maintaining a roster of at least 100 bitcoiners ready to donate with maybe a minimum donation of the BTC equivalent of $10. Bitcoin100 has been around long enough and has a history of helping charities, even if it's only been limited to a very few. Changing the name would essentially be a reboot and I see no real reason for it; it can't be that difficult to keep the number 100 incorporated somehow into its workings.

Wow, thanks, Rassah!! This is fantastic. I for one would be happy to do a press release via Bitcoin Not Bombs. I have already been promoting Bitcoin100 (at the nonprofits panel at the conference, and to my 1000+ facebook contacts & will also be releasing the interview we did on Let's Talk Bitcoin). A press release would be totally fine with me too!! What does everyone else think?

Hi everyone. Sorry, I was out on vacation for the last 1.5 weeks, so didn't have a lot of time to respond. It's a yes regarding donating to you for some press releases and getting help from you in getting more charities to accept Bitcoin.

>By the way, Rassah, have you gotten any leads on other charities recently? I've shared the website, and the video of the nonprofit panel came out today which mentions Bitcoin100.

No, nothing yet. I just sent $1k to http://www.generationsofhope.org/donate/ but they started accepting Bitcoin before our meeting, and were just in que to receive it.

I was actually on vacation, away from home, since Friday of a week ago. I finally got home, so as soon as I unpack and get some sleep, I can get to business (first order of which is to send $1,000 to a charity or two). I don't know if Phinnaeus wants to keep maintaining the website or if he's willing to pass it on to someone else.
