Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
I propose the Bradley Manning Defense Fund (http://couragetoresist.org/donate/bradley-manning.html) as a target charity.

As a founder of the Bradley Manning Support Network, I know the players so I can help out in convincing Courage to Resist (the host 501(c)3 nonprofit) to agree to accept Bitcoin.

I see no problem with supporting Courage to Resist. Please bare in mind that the amount donated will only be $1,000 and not 100 BTC (~$4,500).

All they have to do is embed the Donation Accepted Here button linking to one of their pages or directly to BitPay, of which will transfer their Bitcoin donations to fiat at zero expense to themselves.

It can be looked upon at paying for ad placement, of sorts, with the PayPal button acting as same. Yet, they're paying ~3% for the privilege on having a PayPal ad on their site, whereas we'll pay $1,000 and it'll cost them nothing.

If I figured correctly, they've spent no less than $30,000 on fees along. When they accept bitcoins, they'll never have to pay a fee again. Nor worry about chargebacks, of which I'm sure they've had to deal with as well.

I just sent 2 more BTC to catch me up and for the next one. 4b603a1d0aee79ef9c9788f7edbe4588240af9b315dc7402c3cc09bbed5f440b

It would be nice if on the webpage you had a link to each charity where we can go see their bitcoin donation page. If I like the charity I'll give more.

Thanks.

Thank you, Goat and phelix, for you more than kind donations. The list in the OP has been updated, and I'm sure Rassah will update the ledger in a timely manner.

phelix, I've also changed the links per your request in the OP and on http://bitcoin100.org/about/partisans/

some kind of notification thread would be nice where you announce that there is a new charity that needs coins. the thread should be locked besides the announcements. why? so that I subscribe to it to get reminded to honor more of my pledged coins for a charity of my liking.

also thanks for the update rassah. might be interesting to also note the time value in $ for the next charities. will be more impressive to joe schmoe.

Is there a place to see who and how much we have donated to? If not can this be listed in the first post.

I want to make sure we have only donated to 3 charities as I have only sent 3 BTC. If I have fallen behind I would like to catch up but can't find info even on the website (unless I am blind).

Thanks!

I have that info in my accounting ledger. I'll post it when I get home tonight.

I think people who have a high post count like Phinnaeus Gage and Rassah should try a few different signatures and do traffic analysis on them to see which one gets more clicks.  The ones that are being used seem non-optimal.

I'm having a great month, so to celebrate I'll put in some work on getting another charity recruited.

I will finalize it with the NGO as soon as I get a confirmation from BitPay, else I will get back to you in one week if nothing moved until then.

..whoops, that happens when you don't put up a reminder for things..
It's been a month now, I didn't hear anything from BitPay.
[about that NGO I am in contact with, they are no US-registered NGO which BitPay might insist of]

I contacted Bitcoin-Central. They currently have no no-fees offer for NGOs.

If BitPay doesn't work out my last option is a direct MtGox account..

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
Due to the recent rise in the exchange rate, Bitcoin 100 can safely fund over 8 NPO/NGO at $1,000 USD each.

With all the recent positive press lately, it should be an easier sell to give away $8,000+ USD at $1,000 USD a pop.

Suggestions?

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
Somebody apparently had a question about how I sleep at night:

Quote
Rassah would have you believe that the Bitcoin 100 is purely philanthropic and is extremely proud of mentioning that they've donated a whopping 4K to charities since they started over a year ago. They have almost double that amount that Rassah would rather refund to the donators than give to charities that have proven themselves unworthy by refusing to accept bitcoin donations. I honestly don't know how these people sleep at night.

First of all, they haven't "proven themselves unworthy," they simply have no means to accept it. I can't e-mail bitcoins, or send them by post. The charity actually has to have some way to receive it for us to be able to send it. And second, the answer as to why I would rather return the money, and how I can sleep with myself afterwards, is easy: IT'S NOT MY MONEY, AND IT'S NOT UP TO ME HOW I USE OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY. Nice to know there are other people out there who, when trusted with someone else's money, would just take it and use it for whatever the hell they feel like, thinking it's ok as long as it's for charity or their own personal cause. Frankly, that sounds a lot like government with taxes and social programs, so I could see why they would think it's ok. Sorry, I have a bit more integrity than that.

To be fair, I believe Rassah's statement about returning the money was due to the project seeming static, whereupon that blame was on me at the time. As for the other aspects, Rassah handled it fine.

Bitpay has still not processed the withdrawl for MyRefugeHouse, and I don't think the director will promote it until they come through.  I know bitpay has been busy, and they are looking to hire more people, but it would be nice if they could speed this up a bit.

The director is very happy since I pointed out to her that the bitpay balance is still in bitcoins, and that the value is almost $20 now.

Just received another PM, Seth, from Steve.

...if they want the 50 BTC converted, I need an email from them and to confirm it with the email we have on the account.

Please let us know if the previous BTC50 has hit their bank account. Please PM or call me if another issue arises.

Now go get us another NPO, tiger!  Grin

~Bruno K~

The accountant just told her that $492 was deposited last week, and there is still 50btc in the bitpay account.  So I guess everything is getting sorted out.  She thought it was an automated conversion and deposit.

Steve assured me yesterday that it's been processed, but do keep me abreast if it's delayed much longer.

I believe 2013 will be a great year for Bitcoin100 and Bitcoin in general. I think it's natural that this project slowed down a bit during the Christmas / New Year period. I just came back home from a two week vacation, didn't use much Internet when I was abroad. I now have more time to help with this project, if required.

Darn tootin!

Already making arrangements to have Bitcoin 100 self-supportive, not having to rely upon outside funding.

I don't want to drop the ball on the NGO I am in contact with. So I want to have definitive answers for them soon. Bitcoin to Euro transfers via SEPA, frensh bankaccount.
What would guys suggest?

BitPay with 4% fees, hassle-free?
MtGox with 0.6%+1% fees?
Something different?

They are a registered NGO/Charity in France. BitPay didn't even reply to my PM and mail.
So I fear that asking BitPay to forward costs and fees to us will result in no answers too, and just steal more time..

For now, I don't see an alternative to a diy-automated MtGox account..

Ente email me personally please I haven't seen anything about this before  [email protected]

No problem here, Tony. Thanks for looking into it.

Later, bud.

thanks

sorry since Wordpress our new signups and inquiries have increased by 200%.  There has not been much time to respond to all the people asking for special requests.

Thank you, Tony.
I just wrote you an email.
It is all fine if you take your time. Now that I know someone will get back to me I already am happy :-)

Cheers!

Ente

Well.. Been almost two months, I would like to pick up on that again.
edit: Bruno, would you be so kind and mention this to Bitpay as you are in contact with them at the moment?
Else I try again with mail and PMs..

It seems like we have enough funds for some 1000$ donations.
As soon as I hear back from Bitpay/Tony (or find a different reliable solution) I will try to finish it with the NGO I am in contact with.

Ente

Let's get moving on this, Ente. Currently, we have $7,259.31 USD in our coffers at today's exchange rate. That's enough to easily fund 7 NPOs?NGOs with $1,000 USD each. Since basically we're offering your NGO a $1,000 gift, the fee to exchange it to their local currency shouldn't be an issue. But it is an issue with Bitcoin 100's belief system--no non-profit should ever have to pay a fee to accept donations.

The bottom line is that we would love your NGO to start accepting Bitcoin as one of their donation options. And we're willing to donate $1,000 USD in BTC plus an extra $50 in BTC to cover any cost they may incur during the transferring said donation to their local currency if BitPay proves to not be an option.

I just sent Steve with BitPay a PM and I'm sure he or Tony will take another look at your unique situation. Would you be so kind as to drop me a line next Tuesday at the latest if this issue needs to be pursued further?

I do understand that my suggestion will only cover the fee this time around, buy rest assure that in the future if fees are still an issue with further Bitcoin donation, the cost will be covered one way or another. This is another aspect of the new Bitcoin 100 of which I will soon cover.

As you may have read above, I just sent a PM to Steve with BitPay to address this very issue. Meanwhile, Bitcoin 100 has $1,000 USD awaiting the charitable organization you bring to us, Seth.

EDIT: Steve with BitPay just sent me a PM. The first BTC50 was sent to their bank on Jan. 10, 2013 and they should be seeing soon. Bottom line, they're on top of it now.

Hope it doesn't reverse before you handle her transaction.

It won't.

Rassah just sent the final BTC18 to My Refuge House. https://blockchain.info/tx/6b7d65657e5da0838561ba92919feba8c192409521ad2d5b2057e2493355e1b4
