I have gone on a rampage promoting bitcoin100 this week.  We will get some new charities soon.

There are a few things on the bitcoin100.org website that should be fixed/updated.  Can someone take care of this?

Very nice idea!  A few people and myself are working on a nonprofit, when it actually gets up and running I was thinking about having a bitcoin donation button on the site.  I have no problem with it, however many people who visit the nonprofit's page might link it to something illegal (as mentioned above) which could do a lot of damage in terms of other donations...something for my group to think about.  Way to go for charity though  Grin  I will join in when I get more BTC

I certainly understand the sentiment and would love to do the same.  I expect I'd have no problem with pretty much all organisations that would be considered for support.  I would however refuse to donate to organisations such as Monsanto or the RIAA and for this reason alone simply cannot say "I pledge 1 BTC to any charity/organisation which adds a Bitcoin donation option".

I think the policy is basically nothing political, nothing religious, and more charity than just non-profit. That would exclude any SuperPACs, as well as Monsanto and RIAA. So I wouldn't worry about that.

Generations of Hope has used BitPay to start accepting Bitcoins: http://www.generationsofhope.org/donate/

Let me know if I can provide any more information.  I am sure they would be excited to see some actual Bitcoin donations.

Dan

How did they come to accept it?

I think all of the press about Bitcoin during the rally pushed them over the edge.  The Director heard several pieces on Bitcoin on NPR.

They used BitPay for the implementation, and put a big logo on the Donate page.  As with most nonprofits, you can get to the donate page from almost anywhere on the site.

Now, hopefully it pays off for them Wink

Dan

I think it should. Any objections?
I say go for it Smiley

Nice meeting you on the conference by the way, Rassah!

In light of the news that charities may be looking at massive chargeback fees due to hackers flooding their donation pages with stolen credit cards ...

maybe the language in any Bitcoin introduction could indicate no risk of chargebacks along w/ irreversability.  "Not being reversable" might not click but a charity who just had to cut a bank a check for thousands of dollars in chargeback fees might suddenly be interested in "chargeback free" donations.

yep, I agree

Generally, I won't be upset if Bitcoin100 money ends up going to causes I wouldn't usually donate to.  As you noted, such pledged money is much more like a donation to Bitcoin itself.  If a cause comes along that I really do want to donate to (TOR, Free software foundation, archive.org) then I will make a serious donation on top.

I would be dismayed if the Bitcoin100 didn't manage to get 100 new charities to accept Bitcoin.  It would be a great shame for us to only get through 5 or 6 charities before fizzling out due to there being too much caution.  Just my thought though.

Let them know that BitPay doesn't charge transaction fees for charitable organizations, and will convert the coins to cash for them, so all they'll need to do it get a BitPay account and add the bitcoin donation button to their website (which we will gladly help with). Any coins they get will get deposited as plain cash to their bank account, and as soon as we see that they have that set up, we'll send them $1,000 worth of coins. It'll probably be the easiest $1,000 they'll earn.

I was thinking BitPay sounded like a good approach.

I think if I tell them they will receive $1000 for putting up a little HTML, they'll jump on it.  Any way to get them "approved" to join the Bitcoin 100?

Just link to their website where we can see that they have a Bitcoin donation option. That's it.

Hi Rassah,
Thanks very much for reaching out to us and for what you're doing with Bitcoin100. You mentioned that a non-profit organization that has proof of accepting bitcoin can sign up for support with you all and receive $1000 worth of bitcoins. Is this accurate? I looked on your website, and this part was not clear.

Just in case it's enough to send you the website, here is the link to Fr33 Aid's bitcoin donation page: http://www.fr33aid.com/bitcoin/

And here is the Free State Project's donation page, including a bitcoin donation option: http://freestateproject.org/getinvolved/donate.php

And here is the Antiwar.com page accepting bitcoin:  http://antiwar.com/blog/2012/11/27/an-alternative-way-to-help-antiwar-com/

These are the three charities that had a booth at the Bitcoin Conference 2013 that I've talked to.

Opinions?

I don't mind if each these charities receive $1000 worth of BTC from Bitcoin100 funds. However, since one of our goals is good press for the Bitcoin movement in general, perhaps we can encourage them to do a press release.

In regards to the restructuring/rebranding: I vote for sticking with Bitcoin100 and maintaining a roster of at least 100 bitcoiners ready to donate with maybe a minimum donation of the BTC equivalent of $10. Bitcoin100 has been around long enough and has a history of helping charities, even if it's only been limited to a very few. Changing the name would essentially be a reboot and I see no real reason for it; it can't be that difficult to keep the number 100 incorporated somehow into its workings.

And just to iterate, right now we need charity contacts more than we need donations.

(Ugh, my polish is getting rusty)

Looks OK. Good actually. Unless there are objections, I'd say go for it!

Hi.
Short version:
Our organization will pay you $1,000 if you agree to add a Bitcoin donation option next to your PayPal button. We'll even help you set it up.

Long version:
I represent the Bitcoin100 charity fundraiser organization. Our goal is to spread awareness of the benefits of Bitcoin, especially for charities. Using one of our partners BitPay, you can set up a simple PayPal-like donation option that accepts Bitcoins, and through BitPay the money is instantly converted to USD and deposited to your account. The benefits are 0 fees, getting the money the same day, and no issues with fraud or chargebacks (i.e. donations received from stolen credit cards, which get pulled back once the theft is found out).

Our organization consists of 100+ people who have pledged to donate money to any charity organization that adds a Bitcoin donation option to their site. So, in exchange for letting us help you set up the donation option, we will also make the first donation of $1,000.

Please let me know if you would be interested.

Thank you.

P.S. I will also be attending AnthroCon later this Summer, so will be able to answer any questions

Ok, that had some new info in it for me. Bruno stepped down and you inherited Bitcoin100? You are now in charge of the company direction and funds? Not that it's a bad thing - just wondering.

Correct. At least until if I can find somebody to delegate some of the positions to. This thing has been sitting on its butt and not using its resources for too long, and me being in the position of "I am just a treasurer" I haven't really been motivated to do much with it. Now I'll be working as if it's my thing that I have full responsibility for. Until I see someone more motivated and still trustworthy. I'll still keep all accounts and communications public on here.

That's not true Bruno, you do deserve thanks. It's your brainchild and energy that drove it. I do trust Rassah but was disappointed to hear about you stepping down. It's nice to know you will stay in the loop though.

Maybe I deserve thanks for starting it, but I have been the one that has held it back, running out of excuses to further the cause.

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
So... This:

Well look who showed up on the forum again after disappearing for the weekend and scaring the crap out of me. Thanks for taking care of that Bitcoin100.org problem.

I talked to a few nonprofits at the con, and I think we're going to have a couple of partners working with us. Are you still planning on doing anything at all? Or should I just take over?

I can't seem to get my heart back into the project, Rassah. For the betterment of the project, coupled with all you've done to date, now hopefully securing partners, it may be best for you to take over.

I would have loved to be part of this now that partners may be getting evolved, but at this stage I will probably be holding it back.

Please allow me to do whatever I can short of running the show, and let me know what you desire of me to make sure the transaction runs smoothly.

Feel free to post this PM on the forum in its entirety, PM'ing me when you've done so, so that I can confirm.

Bruno K.

I confirm the above.

Without going into too much detail, recent events had made it difficult for me to devote the full attention to Bitcoin 100 it deserves, therefore I've passed the reins to Rassah, continuing to work with Bitcoin 100 at a much lower capacity.

I don't, nor never did have any control of the funds residing in Bitcoin 100's coffer. The only two people who had/have control of all the bitcoins is Rassah, with Roger Ver holding the only other copy of the private key in case of the proverbial hit-by-a-bus scenario.

I trust Rassah wholeheartedly, and hope you do to. I also believe that he's able to deliver Bitcoin 100 to the next level, whatever that may be.

There's no nefarious reason(s) for my sudden departure. Again, it's for the betterment of Bitcoin 100 in particular and Bitcoin proper in general.

I now understand how most women feel when their child leaves the nest.  Cry

~Bruno K~

PS: I want to once again thank every single person who has contributed to Bitcoin 100, along with those who've simply offering up support in a myriad of other ways.

Please rest assure, that all bitcoins contributed in the past and future will go toward acceptable causes with little or no moneys allocated to overhead, albeit the latter claim may change as the entity grows beyond some manageable stage.

PPS: Please don't take the time to individually post thanks or well wishes for, quite frankly, I probably don't deserve any thanks.

One of the booths at the conference was with three nonprofits, who have organized to try to get other nonprofits to accept bitcoins as well. They have never heard of us, and were very glad to hear that we exist, do the same thing they do (or try to), and have the perk that we provide (sending money). They were very interested in working together with us. Stephanie is the contact for fr33aid.com that I talked to, who interviewed me for their podcast. I sent this to her just now.

Hi Stephanie!
It was nice meeting you guys at the conference. I hope our two organizations can work well together, since we have the same goals.
Our site http://Bitcoin100.org was fixed, so you can point people to it. I believe I have someone who is willing to help fix it up for us, too. Do you know when your podcast will be available? I'd like to listen to it (hope I sounded OK).
Also, the previous person in charge stepped down, so now I'm the CEO in charge, as well as the treasurer. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.2223880
Feel free to refer any questions to me.

Hope to hear from you soon.
